FinancialCyclesWeekly.com #0552 -- December 25-31, 02005 with Tim Bost

COMMENT: As our calendar pages for 2005 disappear and we wrap up our trading for the year, we are quite pleased with the results we have been getting in the markets. This has not been the easiest of all years to make money in stocks, thanks mainly to an extremely flat market that has traded in a narrow range throughout most of the year. At this point the Dow Industrials are up less than 1% for the year, with the NASDAQ up 3.4%, the S+P 500 up 4.6%, and the Russell 2000 up 5.4%. Thanks to our astrologically-based trading methods, however, our year-to-date return has been 14.7%, which is far below our performance in recent years, but which is still so much higher than the market as a whole that we consider it well worth the effort.

And an effort it has been! The year has been a salutary reminder that discipline is essential for effectiveness in the markets, and that the easy money in trading only comes when there's enough hard work to go with it.

Our experience has been that there's always profit to be had in the markets--either in terms of the money to be made or the valuable lessons to be learned. 2005 was a year that brought us a financial return well ahead of the market averages, but we consider the biggest gains to have come during the period of the greatest draw-down in our Model Portfolio. The battle with emotions (the real work of trading) was certainly intensified then, and it brought us a wonderful opportunity to build some clarity and emotional muscle as we stayed disciplined, took our losses, and stuck to our trading plan in spite of the urge to get out, walk away, or change our approach to the trading altogether.

In the long run, of course, maintaining our systematic analysis and staying the course with our trading plan has paid off, and we feel even more confident about moving into the year ahead. After all, we have now learned that our particular brand of astro-trading works well and reliably in trending markets that are moving up, in trending markets that are moving down, and in essentially flat, non-trending markets, too!

EMERGING TRENDS

As we move into the year ahead, we are anticipating a strong bullish move in the equities markets, but it is a move that's also likely to bring a lot of vulnerability with it, especially if the current Venus retrograde period coincides with a significant change in interest rate policies. We already know, of course, that Venus will be retrograde with the changing of the guard at the Federal Reserve, so we can expect the central bank's policies to look and feel quite different in the months and years ahead. While Mr. Greenspan has often amazed us with his ability to dance over, under, around and through the English language, at least his ability to obfuscate has always remained perfectly clear. We're not sure the same can be said for Helicopter Ben; only time will tell.

Along with interest rates, we expect to see the general public paying much more attention in the coming months to foreign exchange rates and to the trends in precious metals. While that may bring some new money into the markets, it also sets the stage for some classic bag-holding scenarios to be played out. As we have noted in this week's "Stocks To Watch" section of this newsletter, we are already contemplating selling some gold stocks short; our sense is that the coming weeks will rapidly reveal just how appropriate that kind of move is right now.

THE WEEK AHEAD

With much of the financial community in holiday mode, there are no significant earnings reports that we will be watching this week. The flow of economics news will also be meager, but we will be watching for the word on Consumer Confidence and November Existing Home Sales, as well as the December report on the Chicago Purchasing Managers Index.

There are a couple of important heliocentric events coming up late in the day on Monday that are likely to impact trading throughout the week: heliocentric Venus will oppose Pluto and conjoin Hades. Efficiency test studies in the SuperSearch module of AIR Software's Market Trader Titanium program provide some interesting insights into the market correlations for these phenomena. Previously these transiting aspects have tended to coincide with increasing prices in the Dow Jones Industrial Averages, with the Dow rallying about 58% percent of the time. Right now geocentric Venus is in retrograde motion, however, and when these heliocentric aspects have occurred in the past with geocentric Venus retrograde, the impact on stocks has been even stronger, with prices heading up 80% of the time. That's why we expect to see stock prices move even higher this week in spite of the fact that the trading volume is likely to be weak.

The Moon will be void-of-course throughout the day on Tuesday when the markets reopen after the Christmas break, so we will be watching the action from the sidelines instead of engaging in active trading that day. Our plan is to do most of our trading on Wednesday and Thursday, although the low trading volume may prove to be a double-edged sword: it may present us with some unexpected bargains, but it may also make it more difficult for us to get orders filled in thinly-traded issues.

During our trading this week we will be tracking fourth-harmonic heliocentric planetary lines (H,90,N,0) for Mercury, Venus, Saturn, Neptune, Pluto, the Earth, Hades, Zeus, and Poseidon, using the Fibonacci Trader/Galactic Trader software to watch for active real-time planetary support and resistance.

With all U.S. markets closed next Monday, January 2, for the New Year holiday, we will be delaying our publication as well. Look for next week's issue of FinancialCyclesWeekly in your email in-box on Tuesday, January 3.

We wish all of our readers and subscribers a joyful holiday and a wonderfully prosperous 2006. Have a great week!

SPIRITUAL FOCUS FOR THE WEEK

Many of history's most successful traders have clearly understood that emotional equilibrium is the key to effective trading. Through Practical Spiritual Astrology we have an opportunity to restore inner harmony, enhance emotional balance, and make wiser choices in the markets.

We may have come to rely upon our intuitive capacities and our ability to bring grace and refinement to all of our experiences, but right now those natural talents are going out-of-sync with the opportunities and commitments that confront us. In reality, this is a sacred time for personal rededication to the highest spiritual ideals, but we may find that reaching that goal requires a little bit of strain and effort on our part. Rather than feeling that external demands are a distraction from our spiritual path, however, we have much more to gain if we see our daily challenges as stepping stones toward full enlightenment.

"Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved." --Helen Keller

STOCKS TO WATCH: AAUK, ZION.

Anglo American PLC ADR (AAUK)
NASDAQ
First Trade Date: 12/01/1970, 10:00 a.m.

Gold has seen a spectacular run-up in recent months, and with some residual impact of transiting Jupiter conjoining First-Trade Jupiter left to play out this week, we are likely to see AAUK follow other gold stocks in a year-end buying spree. If we get higher closing prices for this stock on Tuesday or Wednesday, we will be ready to sell AAUK short before the end of the week, especially with transiting Saturn in opposition first to the transiting Sun/Neptune midpoint and then the transiting Sun/Uranus midpoint as the New Year gets underway. Our initial buy stop will be set at 35.39.

Zions Bancorporation (ZION)
NASDAQ; optionable
First Trade Date: 12/01/1970, 10:00 a.m.

This banking stock has historically responded quite well to transits of Mars through the money sign of Taurus, and with the red planet now back in direct motion we expect to see even more positive price action in the weeks ahead.
During the early part of this week, however, we expect to see a little bit of a price pull-back, with a possible offset coming from transiting Mars in opposition to First-Trade Venus just prior to the start of the trading week. In any event, we will be looking for an opportunity to buy this stock early in the trading week after the markets reopen on Tuesday, with our initial stop set at 75.25.
