FinancialCyclesWeekly.com #0530 -- July 24-30, 02005 with Tim Bost
COMMENT: Was it a big break in the Great Wall of China, or was it just another Chinese puzzle? Maybe it was some sort of Chinese water torture instead.
Whatever it was, last week's move by China in revaluing the Yuan somehow managed to raise hopes, lower expectations, clarify matters and create more uncertainty all at the same time. The Yuan went up in value by 2% as China dropped its fixed peg against the dollar. Instead it will now trade against a basket of currencies, which is apparently considered a good first step but is also a move that won't have much impact on the huge trade gap the U.S. has with China.
No matter what its ultimate implication turns out to be, China's move was well thought out and precisely timed. After all, the announcement of the new policy on the Yuan came at the exact time of the Full Moon, a time which is traditionally associated with the completion of plans and the fulfillment of projects.
AID FOR ALLEN
Regardless of its economic impact, the revaluation of the Yuan did have one unexpected positive side effect last week. The inscrutability of the Chinese actions made Fed Chairman Alan Greenspan's remarks to Congress last week seem crystal-clear by comparison. There's no question that the Fed intends to continue raising interest rates, but what the next move for the Chinese currency versus the dollar will be, or when that move will take place, is anybody's guess.
ASTRO-ECHOES AROUND THE GLOBE
We mentioned a couple of weeks ago how pleased we were to see Barron's quoting our comments in the July 4 issue of their publication. We are always glad to see financial astrology getting more attention from the mainstream media, and the article's publication prompted many of our old friends and clients to renew their connections with us. We were surprised to learn, however, that our comments had also been picked up by Piotr Kuczynski, a well-known market analyst in Poland, who quoted Barron's and our words in one of his recent market reviews. Our thanks go out to FinancialCyclesWeekly reader Wojtek Suchomski, who brought Mr. Kuczynski's article to our attention.

THE WEEK AHEAD
The flood of earnings reports won't be letting up much this week. Among the more noteworthy companies reporting will be Altera Corporation (ALTR), American Express (AXP), American Power Conversion (APCC), Ashland (ASH), Bank of Hawaii (BOH), BellSouth Corporation (BLS), Cendant Corporation (CD), Ecolab Inc. (ECL), Plum Creek Timber (PCL), Pitney Bowes (PBI), Quest Diagnostics (DGX), Texas Instruments (TXN), Xerox Corporation (XRX), 7-Eleven (SE), AFLAC (AFL), Automatic Data Processing (ADP), Avery Dennison (AVY), Biogen Idec Inc. (BIIB), Black and Decker (BDK), Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNI), Centex Corporation (CTX), Chubb Corporation (CB), Citrix Systems (CTXS), International Paper (IP), Linear Technology (LLTC), Lexmark (LXK), Lockheed Martin (LMT), NCR Corporation (NCR), Safeway Inc. (SWY), Sanmina-SCI Corporation (SANM), United States Steel (X), Verizon (VZ), Amerada Hess (AHC), Anheuser-Busch Companies (BUD), Hilton Hotels Corporation (HLT), International Flavors and Fragrances (IFF), Kellogg Company (K), Kerr-McGee (KMG), Norfolk Southern Corporation (NSC), OfficeMax (OMX), Sprint (FON), Starbucks (SBUX) Alberto-Culver Company (ACV), ExxonMobil (XOM), Marathon Oil Corporation (MRO), Northrup Grumman (NOC), American Electric Power (AEP), Anadarko Petroleum (APC), Archer Daniels Midland (ADM), and Baker Hughes Inc. (BHI).
The economic calendar for the week features news on Consumer Confidence, Existing Home Sales, MBA Purchase Applications, Durable Goods Orders, New Home Sales, the Money Supply, Jobless Claims, the Help Wanted Index, Farm Prices, GDP, the Employment Cost Index, and Consumer Sentiment.
The astrological factors at work this week present something of a mixed bag. One of the most powerful dynamics comes late Monday night when there's a Jupiter/Uranus quincunx (a 150-degree angle) in right ascension. This planetary aspect has historically brought stock prices up about 77% of the time, so we expect it to coincide with rising prices starting on Tuesday, with or without a price pull-back at the first of the week.
An even more interesting combination comes during Thursday's early morning hours, with a heliocentric Venus/Jupiter conjunction and a Mars ingress into Taurus coming within 20 minutes of each other. While the Venus/Jupiter connection has been accompanied by rising prices about 55% of the time, the movement of Mars into Taurus has a unique pattern all its own, with stock prices typically rising for about a week after the ingress, and then declining fairly sharply for the next three weeks after that. We should note in this case that Mars will still be in Taurus when it goes retrograde in the fall, a factor which may skew its performance somewhat. Even so, for the short term we continue to look for higher stock prices, with the possibility of a brief correction between now and August 15, while Mercury is still retrograde.
We always like to pay attention to Void-of-Course Moon periods as a part of our trading plan, and there are two of them this week that require special attention. The one on Wednesday just lasts for a half hour, during the mid-day trading doldrums in New York. We're looking for a period of congestion in the markets during that time, with a more definite trend emerging as the Moon moves into Taurus at 13:55 that afternoon. The Void-of-Course Moon on Friday, however, lasts through the entire trading day, so we'll start our weekend early and stay away from active trading altogether that day.
Have a great week!

SPIRITUAL FOCUS FOR THE WEEK
The greatest traders have all understood that emotional balance is the key to successful trading. Through Practical Spiritual Astrology we have an opportunity to restore inner harmony, enhance emotional balance, and make wiser choices in the markets.
We may feel like it's time to launch new projects and create new beginnings in our lives, but we have much more to gain right now if we simply relax and reflect on our past successes and mistakes. As we review our previous efforts and engagements, we have an opportunity to open up fresh resources of self-awareness, creative sympathy, and the kind of courage we need to become true spiritual giants. Our task at present is simply to absorb and expand those qualities patiently; there will soon be ample opportunities to put them to work for greater good.
"Sometimes I lie awake at night, and I ask, 'Where have I gone wrong?' Then a voice says to me, 'This is going to take more than one night.'" -- Charles M. Schulz

Trading Strategy: Here's a strong company trading at a 52-week high, with a good prospect of going even higher. We especially like the current transit of Jupiter, which is closing in on the ACAS First-Trade Ascendant and which will be conjoining First-Trade Venus in short order after that. Saturn has just gotten out of the way of the ACAS First-Trade Moon, so there's plenty of reason to be bullish on this stock. Our plan is to enter a long position before the middle of the week; our initial stop will be set at 35.55.
Answerthink Inc. (ANSR)
NASDAQ
First Trade Date: 05/28/1998; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: ANSR is not much to look at fundamentally, but the astrological picture has gotten us interested. Transiting Saturn is currently crossing the ANSR First-Trade Ascendant, which is probably why ANSR has been hitting some resistance in its recent efforts to advance. Saturn is getting out the way, however, and transiting Mars is conjoining First-Trade Venus. In addition, transiting Jupiter will soon be crossing the ANSR First-Trade IC on its way to a conjunction with First-Trade Apollon. This all adds up to some very positive potential, so we plan to prepare ourselves for a long position in ANSR by placing a limit order at 3.84. With a stock that's trading at such a low price we don't want to overpay; if the order gets filled we will set our initial stop at 3.60.
Corning Inc. (GLW)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 05/21/1945; 10:00 a.m.
Trading Strategy: This venerable company has a situation that closely parallels ANSR, with Saturn crossing the First-Trade Ascendant and Jupiter moving towards the First-Trade IC. To add some extra strength, transiting Venus will soon be conjoining First-Trade Apollon, First-Trade Cupido, and First-Trade Jupiter. Our plan is to add a long position to the Model Portfolio early in the week; we will set our initial stop at 16.00.
Lubrizol Inc. (LZ)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 08/22/1966; 10:00 a.m.
Trading Strategy: LZ is a straight Jupiter play, with the greater benefic crossing its First Trade Ascendant this week. There are a couple of other positive factors at work here as well, like transiting Vulcanus conjoining First-Trade Jupiter and transiting Venus closing in on First-Trade Zeus. We plan to add a long position in LZ to the Model Portfolio as the trading week gets started, with an initial stop set at 40.90.
