FinancialCyclesWeekly.com #0528 -- July 10-16, 02005 with Tim Bost

COMMENT: It has been an explosive week. First, amid the explosion of fireworks set off in celebration of Independence Day, we got news that NASA had successfully smashed into a passing comet. Then there were explosions that shut down public transportation in London. That bad news somehow turned into good news, and a revived stock market exploded into rally mode, just in time for an explosive Hurricane Dennis to smash into the Florida/Alabama coast. Fortunately, the storm's arrival did a lot less damage than anticipated, and we all have an opportunity to reflect on the week's effects.

AN OMEN? OH, MAN!

Since antiquity astrologers have traditionally considered comets to be harbingers of grim news, omens of serious circumstances with profound social implications. Comets have been associated with famines, epidemics, and the deaths of kings. In more recent times the appearance of comets has coincided with nuclear meltdowns and mass suicides.

There's something a little odd, then, about what seems to be the most recent manifestation of the American "shoot first and ask questions later" attitude, appearing this time in the name of scientific research. With much fanfare surrounding an event that was obviously timed to coincide with the July 4 Independence Day holiday and with President Bush' s July 6 birthday, NASA succeeded in whacking the comet Tempel 1 with a Deep Impact rocket early last week. The notion was that by punching a hole in the comet as it passed by in its orbit around the Sun, the Deep Impact probe could help scientists learn a whole lot of new stuff about comets, what creates them, and when they will appear.

Needless to say, this drive to learn about something by attacking it is hardly consistent with the spiritually focused astrological traditions that strive to harmonize human actions with cosmic trends. Even though the pounding by the Deep Impact probe sent up a spectacular cloud of debris which the comet researchers hope to examine, the scientists at NASA insist that the collision did not alter the comet's orbit around the Sun in any important way. They have also been reassuring the media that their comet-smashing experiment poses no significant danger to life on Earth.

At least one Russian astrologer disagrees, however. According to a report in the newspaper Izvestia, Marina Bai has filed a lawsuit against the U.S. space agency, claiming that NASA's Deep Impact probe "deformed her horoscope" when it punched a crater into Tempel 1 and "ruined the natural balance of forces in the universe." Bai's attorney, Alexander Molokhov, says that his client is seeking $300 million in damages. A Moscow court has postponed hearing the case until late July.

TERROR IN THE TUBES

The streets of London and the financial markets around the world were shaken Thursday when a series of bombs exploded in Underground stations and aboard a double-decker bus in the midst of the morning rush hour. Although the British have had years of experience in dealing with urban bombings and amply displayed their characteristic pluck and courage in handling this situation, there were several noteworthy dimensions to the event.

First of all, of course, there was the remarkable market reaction. The shock of the news of the London bombings naturally created some confusion and a bit of panic selling, but things returned to normal within hours and traders went on to bring in some strong advances during the remainder of the week. It was almost as if the bombings gave the equities markets an excuse to celebrate!

Secondly, there were the curious ways the bombings impacted the flow of information as the events unfolded. The timing of the blasts was obviously meant to disrupt the G-8 meeting (which temporarily became a G-7 meeting when Tony Blair returned to London for crisis photo opportunities). Although the G-8 participants did issue a statement that reflected some concerns about terrorism, the bombings didn't deter the economic ministers from focusing on their scheduled agenda of global warming and aid for Africa. The message was apparently that terrorist attacks aren't really all that important after all, and that it's far more productive for world leaders to look at environmental issues and Third World development.

Finally, there were the anomalies that accompanied the bombings. It has become commonplace for events of this sort to spawn an immediate flurry of conspiracy theories and revisionist campaigns, and Thursday's bombings were no exception. The first confusion was about the exact timing of the blasts, but within 24 hours the police had made it clear that all of the subway bombs were timed to go off simultaneously.

The timing of the explosions became a peripheral concern as well with the release of an Associated Press news story by Amy Teibel at 7:14 a.m. EDT, headlined "Netanyahu Changed Plans Due to Warning." The story reported that "British police told the Israeli Embassy in London minutes before Thursday's explosions that they had received warnings of possible terror attacks" and that the warning from Scotland Yard had prompted Israeli Finance Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to stay in his hotel room instead of going to an economic conference at a hotel directly over one of the subway stops where a bombing subsequently occurred. The story also noted that "All phone lines to the embassy were down" following the bombings.

Once the AP news story had been released, however, there was an immediate and vehement protest from the Israeli Embassy, denying that they had gotten any warning. Within the hour, the Associated Press had issued another story under Amy Teibel's by-line, bearing the identical "Netanyahu Changed Plans Due to Warning" headline. This version insisted that Mr. Netanyahu had indeed changed his plans to attend that morning's conference, but only because he had gotten a call from the Israeli Embassy AFTER the bombings had occurred. The article didn't explain how information received after the fact could have been considered a warning by the Finance Minister.

GOLD GAINS FRESH GLITTER

Robert Kiyosaki, the best-selling author of Rich Dad, Poor Dad (with 245 weeks on the New York Times Best Seller List) has announced on his website that he is now storing his wealth in gold and silver. Even though he has made millions as a real estate investor, Kiyosaki has now become extremely cautious about real estate, and has begun selling some of his properties.

"All booms bust," Kiyosaki has informed his readers. He also noted that precious metals are a good way of storing wealth because global inflation is eroding the value of currencies, especially the U.S. dollar. "When silver goes higher than $8.50 an ounce and gold reaches $500 an ounce, you will know the end is near," Kiyosaki says. "When the crash comes, the currency of many countries will go down in purchasing power as the price of these two precious metals rise in value."

THE WEEK AHEAD

With the July 4 holiday week behind us and a new quarter underway, it's time for Earnings Season to begin in earnest. We're expecting a flood of earnings reports this week, which should keep market analysts especially busy. Although it may be challenging to deal with the deluge of information coming in this week, the good news is that it will be more difficult for any specific report to skew market perceptions. The lineup of earnings reports includes Audiovoxx Corporation (VOXX), Genentech, Inc. (DNA), Helen of Troy Ltd. (HELE), Universal Forest Products (UFPI), Bank of the Ozarks, Inc. (OZRK), Infosys Technologies (INFY), Levi Strauss and Company (LEVI), M and T Bank Corporation (MTB), Marshall and Ilsley (MI), Media General (MEG), PepsiCo (PEP), Bank of Granite (GRAN), Citigroup Inc. (C), Fastenal (FAST), Franklin Covey Company (FC), International Business Machines (IBM), Knightsbridge (VLCCF), Apple Computer (AAPL), Abbott Laboratories (ABT), Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), BB+T Corporation (BBT), Harbor Florida Bancshares (HARB), Gannett (GCI), Harley-Davidson (HDI), Lone Star Steakhouse (STAR), Cintas Corporation (CTAS), Fifth Third Bancorp (FITB), Genzyme Corporation (GENZ), Knight Ridder (KRI), Marriott International (MAR), Rambus Inc. (RMBS), Southwest Airlines (LUV), Republic Bancorp (RBNC), Texas Industries (TXI), Tribune (TRB), UnitedHealth Group Inc. (UNH), JB Hunt Transportation (JBHT), General Electric (GE), W.W. Grainger (GWW), and Raymond James (RJF).

The economic calendar for the week ahead features rate announcements from the Bank of Canada and the Bank of Japan, plus the monthly status review from the European Central Bank and reports on ISCS-UBS Store Sales, Import and Export Prices, International Trade, MBA Purchase Applications, the Treasury Budget, EIA Petroleum Status, Retail Sales, Consumer Price Index, Jobless Claims, Producer Price Index, Business Inventories, NY Empire State Index, Industrial Production, Consumer Sentiment, and the Money Supply. In other words, if there's going to be an opportunity for economic news to move the markets, this is the week it's likely to occur. We will especially be keeping an eye on things during the second half of the week, when the most widely-watched and influential reports are due.

From an astrological perspective, we are starting to see a clear shift in energies, with geocosmic factors setting the stage for a clarification of market direction. For the time being, we expect rising prices. Virtually all of the planetary aspects at work this week typically bring upward market trends with them, although the duration of the trends and the reliability of the indicators vary somewhat.

The net effect is that we expect stock prices to continue their upward bias this week, but with a clear potential for leveling out and losing momentum as the week draws to a close. If we get a strong upward move in stock prices that persists for most or all of this week, we should be ready for a fairly sharp reversal to the downside as we move toward the cluster of ingresses and planetary stations surrounding the Full Moon on July 21. On the other hand, if the market action this week shows a weakening of the positive trend or simply becomes more congested, we can look to the following week as an opportunity for a clearer price trend to begin to make itself evident.

Either way, we will be trading this week fairly aggressively, in anticipation of profitable opportunities that favor bold moves. Our strategies for the week include a couple of short equity positions, however, since we want to be ready for a potential reversal in the coming weeks. The first part of this trading week features a concentrated dose of eclipse activations (4 on Monday, 3 on Tuesday, 2 on Wednesday, and 1 on Thursday), so we will be alert for parallels between the current market actions and the trends of 2003 and 2004. It promises to be a busy and productive week, but we will be honoring the period of the lunar void at the close of the trading day on Tuesday by wrapping up our activities early that day.

Have a great week!

GLOBAL EQUITIES MARKETS LAST WEEK

The Pacific Rim markets continued to show signs of weakness last week, but elsewhere around the globe the trend was definitely positive. In the U.S. the big gains were in the lower-cap issues, while European issues demonstrated considerable strength for the most part. Paris continued to do well despite losing its bid to become the Olympic host city, while the bombings in London seemed to energize the market, with the FTSE breaking decisively through resistance to hit its highest trading levels since the spring of 2002.

Dow Jones Industrial Average -- up 1.70%
Dow Jones Transportation Average -- up 2.93%
Dow Jones Utilities Average -- up 0.99%

U.S. EQUITY TRENDS

U.S. markets did well last week, holding their positive short-term bias. The Russell 2000 broke through its resistance at 648.75 to close the week at 662.14, so we are now showing an intermediate-term bullish trend for that average.

STOCKS TO WATCH: BBA, EMR, HYSL, KG, KTC, TTC.

Bombay Company Inc. (BBA)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 05/26/1993; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: Here's what appears to be a company with lousy fundamentals, including negative earnings and performance that significantly lags the other stocks in its industry group. We find the stock interesting, however, because of the risk/reward ratio involved and because of the significant astrological dynamics that lie ahead. Transiting Saturn is just getting past the BBA First-Trade Ascendant, with transiting Mars ready to conjoin First-Trade Venus and transiting Mercury and Venus both moving toward conjunctions with First-Trade Mars. On top of that, transiting Jupiter will conjoin the BBA First-Trade IC in early August, and then move on to conjoin First-Trade Apollon. All of this adds up to a huge positive opportunity for this stock, so we plan to add a long position in BBA to our Model Portfolio early this week. We will set our initial stop at 4.25.

Emerson Electric Company (EMR)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 09/05/1944; 10:00 a.m.
Trading Strategy: Saturn has been pulling the price of this stock down, but with Saturn getting ready to move past the EMR Midheaven this week, an opportunity is opening up for a long position. We also have transiting Apollon hanging out near the EMR First-Trade Ascendant, along with transiting Venus conjoining First-Trade Pluto, transiting Neptune square First-Trade Venus, and transiting Kronos sesquiquadrate First-Trade Venus. This may sound terribly complicated, but the net result is a lot of strong support for a rebound in this stock. We thus plan to enter a long position immediately, with an initial stop set at 60.65.

Hyperion Solutions (HYSL)
NASDAQ; optionable
First Trade Date: 11/07/1995; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: Isn't Jupiter great? In late June it began closing in on the HYSL Midheaven and this stock responded obediently by shooting up in price. With Jupiter moving on past the First-Trade Midheaven this week, however, that positive influence is about to come to a rather abrupt end. Oh, sure, there's a long slow square from transiting Apollon to First-Trade Neptune, but that's hardly an adequate substitute for good old Jupiter. Our expectation is that we'll see HYSL continue its upward move for a couple more trading sessions; if so, we'll consider it a confirmation for our trading strategy, which will be to sell this stock short near the end of the trading week. Our initial buy stop will be set at 48.77.

King Pharmaceuticals Inc. (KG)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 05/23/2000; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: Saturn recently passed over the KG First-Trade Ascendant, making room for transiting Jupiter to come in and connect with the First-Trade IC. It's a very, straightforward astrological trade--let Saturn bring the price down, and then ride Jupiter on the way up. Our plan with this stock is to add a long position to the Model Portfolio early this week, setting our initial stop for KG at 9.55.

KT Corporation (KTC)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 05/26/1999; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: Transiting Saturn has hit KTC hard during the past month, bringing this stock's price down fairly sharply. Unfortunately, we don't see much at work to reverse that negative trend, and with transiting Neptune conjoining First-Trade Uranus the damage could actually be amplified. Our strategy will thus be to sell KTC short this week, with an initial buy stop at 22.10.

Toro Company (TTC)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 09/06/1978; 10:00 a.m.
Trading Strategy: We've traded this stock successfully in the past, and it has come to our attention again as a viable trading candidate. TTC has been beaten up pretty badly during the past few months, but with Saturn currently crossing the First-Trade Midheaven we suspect that the troubled times will soon be over. There are several other factors at work that suggest a positive outlook here, namely transiting Saturn conjoining First-Trade Jupiter, transiting Apollon conjoining First-Trade Poseidon, transiting Cupido semisquare the First-Trade Ascendant, transiting Jupiter semisquare First-Trade Mercury, transiting Chiron semisquare First-Trade Neptune, and transiting Saturn sesquiquadrate First-Trade Neptune. That's a lot to keep an eye on, but we expect the net effect to be a solid retracement to the upside. We plan to enter a long position early this week, with our initial stop set at 31.05.
