FinancialCyclesWeekly.com #0527 -- July 3-9, 02005 with Tim Bost
COMMENT: We are pleased to see that our recent comments on the real estate bubble, which appeared in last week's issue of this newsletter, have been quoted in the current (July 4) issue of Barron's. While that prestigious review of market trends and investment opinion has cited our publication on several occasions in the past, it has been about nine months since we last appeared in its pages.
As always, we are grateful to get such favorable attention. What pleases us the most, however, is the fact that financial astrology is currently being given more and more of the credit and recognition it deserves. It's a powerful tool for forecasting market trends and for identifying investment opportunities, and we're glad that it is beginning to reach a wider audience. Along the way, we're also proud to be able to provide important insights to our subscribers, who get to profit from them at least a week earlier than that wider audience.
WATCH THE MONEY
The point of the comment that Barron's cited was that shifting trends in the median price of home sales can provide an early indicator of impending weakness in the real estate bubble. As the average starts to dip lower, it becomes increasingly apparent that the bubble won't last forever.
What's even more interesting, however, is the fact that even as the median price has been declining, a new record has been set for the sale of a single residential property in the U.S. About two weeks ago, a 40-acre estate in the Hamptons, the Long Island retreat favored by New York's glitterati, was sold for a cool $90 million, shattering the previous $70 million record for the sale of a residence.
The three-bedroom, three-bath farmhouse, owned by Schlumberger oil heiress Adelaide de Menil Carpenter, was purchased by a Swedish industrialist who has rented the property for the past few summers. The estate also features two guest houses, a two-bedroom caretaker's house, a man-made fishing pond, a lap pool, a few acres of tillable farmland, and a private beachfront.
The previous record for a home sale in the Hamptons was set in 2000, when Jerry Seinfeld paid $32 million for singer Billy Joel's mansion. The $70 million residence, in Palm Beach, Florida, was purchased by billionaire Ronald Perelman last year.
The new record price is especially significant because it means that in order for the average price of a home sale to be declining, more homes are selling for even lower prices to compensate for the huge sums being paid for the high-end homes. The low-end properties aren't increasing in value at all, and the would-be sellers in the mid-range residential market are getting squeezed.
SATURN MOVE HITS GOLD PRICES
Last week we noted that Saturn was moving into Leo, both heliocentrically and by right ascension, even though the planet's geocentric ingress into the sign won't come until July 16. We commented that "we wouldn't be surprised to see some of the effects of this ingress, especially in precious metals, showing up right now."
As it turned out, the Saturn ingress in right ascension did in fact make quite an impact on precious metals, particularly on gold. The yellow metal dropped by $12 an ounce from its high on Thursday to its low on Friday this past week, immediately after Saturn's ingresses heliocentrically and by right ascension.
THE BULL IN THE CHINA PROPAGANDA
We've noticed increasing attention being paid in the media to the ever-more-dominant role that China is playing in the world economy, especially with regard to the U.S. trade deficit. More often than not, China is being portrayed as a threatening presence on the global stage, looking for evil ways to devastate the American way of life by gobbling up the planet's raw materials and crushing the U.S. currency.
While that perspective may make for sensational headlines, it isn't necessarily accurate. In fact, it contains an ample supply of bovine excrement.
China certainly has a much longer-range perspective than the U.S. does; it is a nation that is used to thinking in terms of centuries, while for most Americans long-range planning involves thinking about what snack to grab during the next commercial break on television. The U.S. deficit with China, however, is not just the result of Chinese foresight or competitiveness. It's really about the short-sightedness and lack of competitiveness that now characterizes the United States.
It's good to remember that while China enjoys a trade surplus with the U.S., it is facing increasing trade deficits with the rest of the world, particularly with its Asian trading partners. A currency reevaluation by the Chinese would risk destabilizing that situation even farther.
In other words, the U.S. trade deficit is really an American problem, and not the result of a dastardly foreign threat. Americans have an incredibly low savings rate, and the numbers have been spiraling down as the U.S. budget deficit continues to grow. Increasing foreign financing is letting the U.S. government pump up its expenditures to historically high levels, while American consumers are spending instead of saving, racking up more and more personal debt as they do so.
Unfortunately, this is a situation that could get much worse before it gets better. Right now we are seeing an increase in the U.S. trade deficit because more and more goods are being imported to entertain U.S. consumers. But what will happen when the U.S. deficit increases because the country is borrowing money from foreign sources in order to service the debt (pay the interest) it owes to foreign investors? A service account deficit could have much more serious long-term implications.
KEEPING TRACK OF CONGRESS
It currently costs U.S. taxpayers about $100 million a year to pay for the Congressional Research Service, the in-house think tank that creates reports for members of Congress on various topics related to current economic and political developments. Ironically, though, these expensive reports have not been made easily available to U.S. citizens, even though they are in the public domain and are often essential for a clear understanding of the development of public policy.
Now, however, thanks to the cooperation of several organizations including the Center for Democracy and Technology, the Federation of American Scientists, the National Council on Science and the Environment, the IP Mall at the Franklin Pierce Law Center, the National Memorial Institute for the Prevention of Terrorism, and the Thurgood Marshall Law Library at the University of Maryland School of Law, that situation has changed. The groups have pooled the documents in their possession and made them all available for free on a new website, www.opencrs.com. There you'll find background information on gasoline prices, veterans' issues, identity theft, social security, HIV/AIDS programs, energy policy, U.S. trade agreements, and much, much more.
COMING SOON TO AN IN-BOX FOR YOU
As we mentioned last week, we are now getting ready to launch two new monthly services for our readers. Both will be available soon as free e-zines, sent directly to your email inbox. These optional services will be available by request.
The GANN PLAN ASTRO-TRADING LETTER will present tips and tidbits on the kind of trading approach that made the legendary trader W.D. Gann so successful, with a particular emphasis on the astrological and spiritual dynamics in his work and on ways to use Gann's work for innovative trading strategies today.
In PRACTICAL SPIRITUAL ASTROLOGY the emphasis will be on monthly strategies for working with astrological cycles to enhance personal and spiritual development. Like the GANN PLAN ASTRO-TRADING LETTER, it will be a brief, easy-to-read email communication arriving monthly.
Subscriptions to either e-zine, or to both of them, are absolutely free. To subscribe, log on to www.TimBost.com and select "NEWSLETTERS," then enter your contact information and newsletter preferences. You'll get an automated reply e-mail sent to the address you enter. Just respond to verify, and your subscription will begin when the first issues are published during the next few weeks!

THE WEEK AHEAD
This will be a short trading week thanks to the Independence Day holiday, but there will still be a few earnings reports we will be watching for, including ADE Corporation (ADEX), Acuity Brands, Inc. (AYI), Cutter and Buck (CBUK), A. Schulman (SHLM), America's Car-Mart, Inc. (CRMT), Capstone Turbine (CPST), Pepsi Bottling Group (PBG), ALCOA Inc. (AA), GenCorp Inc. (GY), Laidlaw International, Inc. (LI), and Accenture (ACN).
The economic calendar for the week includes word on Factory Orders, the ISM Non-Manufacturing Survey, Chain Store Sales, Jobless Claims, Consumer Credit, Nonfarm Payrolls, Average Workweek, Average Hourly Earnings, Unemployment Rate, and Wholesale Trade.
Astrologically this week brings the continuing impact of the multi-phase Saturn ingress, amplified through the focal point of Wednesday's New Moon. Wednesday is also a day with beneficial aspects to the money planet Venus, plus two eclipse activations and a Venus/Uranus dynamic that adds to the likelihood of a positive trading day. On Thursday a void-of-course Moon in the afternoon will give us cause to step aside from the trading action for a couple of hours. On Friday the transneptunian planet Apollon will make a direct station, opening up new possibilities for expansion in the markets.
In short, we anticipate a fairly positive week for stock market action, even though the shortened trading week and the season's natural inclination toward decreased trading volume will both tend to soften the extent of the price run-up that come sliding into our hands.
Have a great week!

SPIRITUAL FOCUS FOR THE WEEK
The greatest traders have all understood that emotional balance is the key to successful trading. Through Practical Spiritual Astrology we have an opportunity to restore inner harmony, enhance emotional balance, and make wiser choices in the markets.
When we make conscious choices to improve our material well-being, we are actually planting the seeds of our future spiritual growth. Even a small amount that is set aside in a savings account or that is given freely to aid another can awaken within us the precious remembrance that we can trust the Divine Plan to nurture us as we move ever more steadily toward higher possibilities in our lives.
"While there is a chance of the world getting through its troubles, I hold that a reasonable man has to behave as though he were sure of it. If at the end your cheerfulness is not justified, at any rate you will have been cheerful." - H.G. Wells

STOCKS TO WATCH: AXP, CRK, MDP, PH, TCB.
American Express Company (AXP)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 05/18/1977; 10:00 a.m.
Trading Strategy: Saturn is ready to cross over the AXP First-Trade Ascendant, setting the stage for a potential price jump. Not too long after that, we will see transiting Jupiter form a conjunction to First-Trade Pluto, a sesquiquadrate to the First-Trade Sun, and a conjunction to the First-Trade IC, all in rapid succession. All of these planetary aspects are positive indicators for this stock, but to top things off, we also have transiting Mars about to conjoin First-Trade Venus. That transit has brought AXP up in price 11 of the last 11 times it has occurred, and we see no reason to expect anything different this time around. We are ready to add a long position in this stock to our Model Portfolio immediately; our initial stop will be set at 52.75.
Comstock Resources Inc. (CRK)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 12/17/1996; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: With transiting Saturn conjoining the First-Trade Descendant and the transiting True Lunar Node sesquiquadrate First-Trade Pluto, there a lot of powerful potential in this oil stock. We like the solid fundamentals here as well, not to mention the fact that a nice positive got underway in Friday's trading. Our plan is to add a long position in CRK to the Model Portfolio early this week, with an initial stop set at 24.00.
Meredith Corporation (MDP)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 12/09/1965; 10:00 a.m.
Trading Strategy: The recent trading for this stock has been in a channel defined by its 50-Day Moving Average and its 200-Day Moving Average, with MDP struggling to regain the price levels it enjoyed late last year. With transiting Saturn moving past its First-Trade Descendant, however, MDP should be able to make some forward progress more easily. There are some additional astrological benefits ahead as the transiting True Lunar Node forms a square to First-Trade Mars, a sesquiquadrate to First-Trade Mercury, and a semisquare to the First-Trade True Lunar Node. The overall prospects look promising, but they may be short-lived, so we plan to add a long position in this stock to our portfolio at the start of this trading week. Our initial stop will be set at 47.00.
Parker Hannifin Corporation (PH)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 12/09/1964; 10:00 a.m.
Trading Strategy: PH is a carry-over from last week's watch list; we placed a limit order but did not get filled, since the stock did not pull back as we had anticipated. Even so, PH looks like a good value and we believe there is still some play left in this trade, so we will add a long position at the market as this week gets underway. We will set our initial stop at 56.50.
TCF Financial Corporation (TCB)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 05/26/1989; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: Once transiting Saturn moves past the TCB First-Trade Ascendant, Jupiter will take charge of this chart. We're looking for its positive aspects to give us an opportunity for a good return, so we will be adding a long position in TCB to the Model Portfolio this week. Our initial stop will be set at 24.95.
