FinancialCyclesWeekly.com #0525 -- June 19-25, 02005 with Tim Bost

COMMENT: This continues to be an extremely difficult market environment to trade effectively. Although we have been experiencing a short-term rally in the equities markets, stocks are still essentially flat for the year to date. So although we've been able to outperform the market as a whole, we don't feel very enthusiastic about the results we've been getting.

As usual, our overall trading strategy revolves around identifying special situations in the markets that promise potential profits, and then moving in and out of swing trades to capture those gains in small increments. While a normal part of our trading discipline is to accept an abundance of small losses, in the current equities market we have seen those losses take on a stubborn degree of persistence, while our profitable trades have been rare and often disappointing.

In other words, we've been working hard for the gains we've been able to keep so far this year, and while we remain convinced that our rigorous approach to money management and disciplined trading will ultimately bring us abundant returns once again, for the time being our market experience is a lot like being nibbled to death by ducks.

UNCERTAINTY AND INTENSIFICATION

That's not to say we're getting discouraged. Far from it. In fact, we are seeing more and more promising trading opportunities every week, and have been able to capitalize on a few of them quite nicely. For example, as we pointed out last week, we expected the recent Uranus retrograde station to be "a factor that adds uncertainty to the overall market picture and increases the level of volatility in geopolitical affairs," while tending to "bring blue-chip equity prices up."

Sure enough, last week brought an intensification of the current market rally, and while the trading opportunities that came with it required a high level of caution and attentiveness, they nevertheless allowed us to lock in profits rapidly. Along the way, many non-market situations around the globe had a distinctly Uranian feel as well. The astrology textbooks remind us that Uranus is associated with surprises, explosions, disruptions, innovations, and revolutions, and all of them were certainly in evidence.

In California, the impact was perhaps most disruptive of all, with four major earthquakes during the week. It gave us considerable cause for reflection. While we have been pondering what events might precipitate the bursting of the real estate bubble there, we hadn't actively considered the possibility that a sizeable chunk of the state might just break off and slide into the Pacific Ocean. Talk about declining property values!

California was also the venue for the Michael Jackson trial, of course, and the singer's acquittal was immediately followed by media speculation about how dire his financial situation must be in the wake of the legal proceedings. It was just the beginning of the week's judicial surprises, however, with Dennis Kozlowski, the ex-CEO of Tyco International, being found guilty and with Florida Governor Jeb Bush demanding that Terry Schaivo's husband Michael be investigated for potential negligence in his wife's death, even though an autopsy a day earlier seemed to have at last laid the feeding-tube controversy to rest.

AN EVEN BIGGER IDENTITY CRISIS

Lest we forget the association of Uranus with things related to computers, the media broke the story that the recent disastrous loss of computer tapes at CitiFinancial, the consumer-finance division of Citigroup, was just the tip of the identity-theft iceberg. As we mentioned last week, Citigroup is notifying 3.9 million customers that their credit information, including names, addresses, and Social Security numbers has been compromised by the loss of the computer records.

Last Friday MasterCard International admitted that it, too, has been the victim of a massive breach in computer security. In this case, however, computer hackers made off with the credit card numbers and expiration dates for roughly 40 million card holders. By the time the theft was discovered, at least 68,000 MasterCard accounts had had fraudulent charges posted to them.

OPEC SURPRISINGLY HO-HUM

We mentioned last week that the astrological configurations surrounding the Uranus station had particularly strong correlations with the inception chart for OPEC, signaling the possibility that a surprise announcement from the oil ministers could send petroleum prices zooming. As it turned out, the big OPEC surprise was that the organization only made a symbolic move toward increasing crude oil production, an effort that left the markets unimpressed. It's the tight supplies of heating oil and diesel that are raising the biggest concerns right now, and the OPEC announcement failed to address those issues directly.
Apparently those petroleum components didn't like being ignored, so the price of crude shot up anyway, hitting a new record level.

FED UP WITH FREEDOM FRIES

Uranus also made shock waves in the halls of congress. U.S. Representative Walter B. Jones of North Carolina, the conservative Republican congressman who a couple of years ago was pushing the House cafeteria to rename French fries "freedom fries" because of French opposition to the U.S. war against Iraq, has joined with fellow Republican Ron Paul of Texas and Democrats Dennis Kucinich of Ohio and Neil Abercrombie of Hawaii in sponsoring legislation requiring the Bush Administration to produce a plan for withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq. The move came soon after a Gallup Poll found that 59 percent of Americans now favor withdrawing U.S. troops from the conflict.

The House of Representatives also defied President Bush with a 238-187 vote to scale back government powers to conduct secret investigations of U.S. citizens as authorized by the Patriot Act. Among other things, the newly-approved measure will make it harder for federal agents to gather information on people's library reading habits and bookstore purchases.

CATAPULTING THE PROPAGANDA

Of course President Bush isn't about to reverse his opinions on the war effort, with or without congressional cooperation, the approval of the American people, or the existence of weapons of mass destruction. He's also persisting in his massive effort to convince Americans that Social Security needs to be privatized. As he noted at one recent appearance, "See, in my line of work you got to keep repeating things over and over and over again for the truth to sink in, to kind of catapult the propaganda."

A BOGUS COLLAPSE?

The Uranian rumblings didn't stop in the halls of congress or with the president's catapulting. A story in United Press International last week revealed that a former member of the Bush Administration during the president's first term in office is now expressing doubts about the real cause of the collapse of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.

Morgan Reynolds, former chief economist for the Department of Labor and former director of the Criminal Justice Center at the National Center for Policy Analysis in Dallas, Texas, says that the official story about the collapse of the WTC is "bogus," and that it is much more likely that a controlled demolition actually destroyed the Twin Towers and adjacent Building Number 7.

Reynolds, who is now professor emeritus at Texas A+M University, noted that "If demolition destroyed three steel skyscrapers at the World Trade Center on 9/11, then the case for an 'inside job' and a government attack on America would be compelling. It is hard to exaggerate the importance of a scientific debate over the cause of the collapse of the twin towers and building 7. If the official wisdom on the collapses is wrong, as I believe it is, then policy based on such erroneous engineering analysis is not likely to be correct either. The government's collapse theory is highly vulnerable on its own terms. Only professional demolition appears to account for the full range of facts associated with the collapse of the three buildings."

THE WEEK AHEAD

This week we anticipate getting earnings reports from Enersys (ENS), American Healthways (AMHC), Arrow International (ARRO), CarMax, Inc. (KMX), Apogee Enterprises (APOG), Christopher and Banks (CBK), Jabil Circuit (JBL), the Kroger Company (KR), Daren Restaurants (DRI), Kerr-McGee (KMG), Casella Waste Systems (CWST), Morgan Stanley (MWD), Bed Bath and Beyond Inc. (BBBY), Tektronix Inc. (TEK), FedEx (FDX), Solectron (SLR), Family Dollar (FDO), A. G. Edwards (AGE), and AZZ Inc. (AZZ).

On the economic front we're looking for a Leading Indicators report this week, plus the latest numbers on Durable Goods Orders. The most widely watched economic news, however, is likely to come from the reports on May Existing Home Sales and May New Home Sales.

This is a fairly calm week from an astrological perspective, but there will definitely be enough action to make things interesting for traders. Monday features two eclipse activations, with Venus linking the market action to eclipses in May, 2003 and October, 2004. Tuesday brings the Summer Solstice, but a void-of-course Moon kicks in about two hours after the opening bell in New York, giving wise traders a reason to step aside for the remainder of the trading day. The trading energy that day could be particularly challenging, since there is also a Zeus station and a Mars/Zeus opposition in right ascension.

Wednesday's Full Moon comes just an hour before another eclipse activation, again linking the week's energies to May, 2003. On Thursday we get the Mars/Zeus opposition on the ecliptic, and are treated to yet another eclipse activation, this time featuring the Lunar Eclipse coming up next October. Eclipses cast shadows before they occur as well as after the fact, so Thursday's trading action may give us an interesting clue about what to expect in the market this fall. With a Mercury/Vulcanus conjunction also active on Thursday we can expect some very important news to break, perhaps setting the stage for a major shakeup on the trading floors. By Friday, however, a Venus/Uranus sesquiquadrate will be making itself felt, bringing a renewed surge in optimism that afternoon to finish the trading week.

On balance, then, we expect stock prices to rise this week through Wednesday before experiencing a rather sharp pull-back on Thursday. If that brief correction comes, it's likely to be followed by an even more intense up-trend day to close out the week on Friday.

Have a great week!

SPIRITUAL FOCUS FOR THE WEEK

The greatest traders have all understood that emotional balance is the key to successful trading. Through Practical Spiritual Astrology we have an opportunity to restore inner harmony, enhance emotional balance, and make wiser choices in the markets.

What enables us to be leaders? We may think it is the acceptance and approval of those around us, the ones who defer to our judgment and opinions. In reality, however, true leadership comes from our ability to lead ourselves, to calm our own ego demands and to be true to our inner purpose.

"Everyone has inside himself a piece of good news! The good news is that you really don't know how great you can be, how much you can love, what you can accomplish, and what your potential is!" -- Anne Frank

STOCKS TO WATCH: AEOS, MTH, PHM, PLLL, TS.

American Eagle Outfitters, Inc. (AEOS)
NASDAQ; optionable
First Trade Date: 04/14/1994; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: AEOS has been on a roll since the fall of 2003, and there are planetary aspects coming that create the possibility of even brighter prospects ahead. Transiting Saturn is currently forming an opposition to First-Trade Uranus and creating a T-Square pattern with the First-Trade Sun. At the same time transiting Uranus is conjoining First-Trade Saturn and transiting Mercury is hitting First-Trade Vulcanus, with transiting Pluto hanging out around the Descendant in the AEOS First-Trade horoscope. This configuration suggests the possibility of some dynamic price action ahead, and with AEOS just having broken out to form a new all-time high, we are ready to add a long position to the Model Portfolio this week. We will enter the trade early in the trading week, setting our initial stop at 29.50.

Meritage Homes Corporation (MTH)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 07/21/1988; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: Here's another combination of Saturn and Uranus energies that offers some trading potential. In this case, transiting Uranus has just made its retrograde station on the MTH First-Trade Descendant, with transiting Saturn moving toward a conjunction with the MTH First-Trade Sun. We like the potential that brings to move this stock to new heights, especially considering the momentum MTH has already gained in recent months. Our plan is to add a long position in MTH to the Model Portfolio early this week, with our initial stop set at 71.75.

Pulte Homes Inc. (PHM)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 06/29/1983; 10:00 a.m.
Trading Strategy: PHM has a tight three-planet conjunction in its First-Trade horoscope, combining the energies of Saturn, Pluto, and Poseidon. All three are receiving a square from transiting Saturn right now, suggesting that PHM could start to form a base that will eventually lead to even higher prices. With transiting Jupiter conjoining First-Trade Apollon this week, that goal seems very attainable. We plan to add a long position to the Model Portfolio early in the week, setting our initial stop at 78.00.

Parallel Petroleum Corporation (PLLL)
NASDAQ; optionable
First Trade Date: 12/08/1980; 10:00 a.m.
Trading Strategy: Oil has been picking up again lately, and suddenly it's profitable to pick up a few share of oil-related stocks for short-term plays. That's a good reason for looking at PLLL, of course, but we also like to see the added support of transiting Jupiter conjoining First-Trade Apollon and transiting Apollon conjoining First-Trade Pluto, along with transiting Saturn crossing the First-Trade Descendant. Our plan is thus to add a long position in PLLL to the Model Portfolio early this week, with an initial stop set at 7.50.

Tenaris S.A. (TS)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 12/16/2002; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: Here's another oil-related play, also with Saturn crossing the First-Trade Descendant. In this case, however, transiting Pluto is conjoining the TS First-Trade Sun, so we have every reason to believe that the positive price trend will continue. With that in mind, we will be adding a long position to the Model Portfolio early this week. Our initial stop will be set at 69.25.
