FinancialCyclesWeekly.com #0524 -- June 12-18, 02005 with Tim Bost
COMMENT: We suggested last week that "there is much to support a positive bias in the markets right now," and that certainly proved to be the case for equities. Most of the market action we have been tracking turned back into a positive direction, although the trading did not break through key resistance levels to set new highs. The positive bias has now brought us to a tipping point, with virtually equal potentials for a positive breakout and an intensified rally or for a reversal into negative territory, at least from a technical perspective.
With the added insight of astrological analysis, however, we're sticking with our positive bias. Whether or not we will see a breakout into new highs remains to be seen, but in any case we anticipate an extension of the current short-term bullish trend.
THE GENERAL MOTORS GOOD NEWS/BAD NEWS
It was a tough week if you were an employee of General Motors, but a good one if you were a GM shareholder. The embattled automobile manufacturer announced plans to shut down factories and lay off 25,000 workers in the U.S. The cost-cutting moves apparently pleased the Street; GM stock was up more than 11.5% for the week.
IDENTITY CRISIS AT CITIGROUP
CitiFinancial, the consumer-finance division of Citigroup, admitted last Monday that it has lost computer tapes containing information about its credit accounts, including names, addresses, and Social Security numbers. The company said the tapes were lost by United Parcel Service while they were being shipped to an Experian credit bureau facility in Texas. Citigroup will be notifying 3.9 million customers that their credit information has been compromised by the loss.
A FAKE MUSTACHE FOR ALAN GREENSPAN
The week's news included word that former central banker Rerngchai Marakanond has been convicted by a Thai court and fined $4.6 billion after being declared responsible for the currency crisis in the Thai baht in 1997-1998. This provoked Bill Bonner to issue his "Advice to Alan Greenspan: Get a false mustache and an address in Switzerland."
Bonner, the author of "Financial Reckoning Day," reminded his readers that the great economist Joseph Schumpeter once declared: "Any stimulus in excess of savings is a fraud."
Greenspan's crime, according to Bonner, has been "Putting interest rates below the inflation rate, and leaving them there for three-and-a-half years after the 'emergency' was over." The Fed Chairman's actions "misled consumers into believing they had money to spend...and misled business (particularly Chinese business) into thinking its customers had more money than they actually had."
IS A GOLD RALLY IN THE WORKS?
Pierre Lassonde, the president of Newmont Mining, the world's largest gold mining company, said this past week that he expects gold prices to hit $525 an ounce by the beginning of 2006. Lassonde noted that he thinks the U.S. dollar will lose another 15 percent of its value versus other currencies.
7-YEAR-OLD GETS FUNDRAISING WHEELS ROLLING
We always appreciate hearing stories of individual economic initiative, especially when it comes in the face of massive corporate or governmental strength or in response to huge challenges. That's exactly what caught our attention when we learned of the successful efforts made recently by Thomas Glass, a 7-year-old first grader at the Episcopal School of Knoxville, Tennessee.
In response to news about the plight of the tsunami victims, Thomas came up with the idea of holding a "Wheel-A-Thon," a circuit ride around his school's 96-acre campus, with participants racing each other on tricycles, bicycles, scooters, skates, and skateboards.
The racers each donated a minimum of $10 to the fundraising effort, with the proceeds supplemented with income from a concession stand at the event, where Thomas' twin brother Michael and their 6-year-old sister Katherine sold cookies and lemonade.
Thomas not only had the inspiration for the event, he also organized all the details. "I wanted to do this because their homes were washed out and they need lots of money to build them back," he explained. When he was asked if it had been difficult for him to coordinate the event, he said it was "A little, but not very hard," adding that his biggest challenge had been "getting the parents to come out."
In fact, however, his classmates, their parents, and faculty volunteers all rallied around the event. The Wheel-A-Thon raised $375 for tsunami relief efforts.

THE WEEK AHEAD
The earnings reports we will be watching this week include BioVeris (BIOV), Measurement Specialties (MSS), National Technical (NTSC), Best Buy (BBY), BMC Software (BMC), Lehman Brothers Holdings (LEH), Atari Inc. (ATAR), Bear Stearns (BSC), Neon Systems (NEON), Goldman Sachs (GS), Adobe Systems (ADBE), Actuant Corporation (ATU), KB Home (KBH), and Circuit City Stores (CC).
The economic news in the spotlight this week will include the Producer Price Index, the Consumer Price Index, Retail Sales, Business Inventories, Capacity Utilization, Industrial Production, and Housing Starts. We will also get the Philadelphia Fed Survey for June and the preliminary June numbers on Consumer Sentiment from the University of Michigan.
OPEC ministers will be meeting in Vienna on Wednesday; a surprise announcement there could shake up oil futures and equities. With the previous day's Uranus station hitting the Saturn/Hades midpoint and squaring the Ascendant in the OPEC inception chart, this will definitely be an event worth keeping an eye on.
The week's astrological picture is dominated, of course, by that Uranus retrograde station. It's a factor that adds uncertainty to the overall market picture and increases the level of volatility in geopolitical affairs. Historically, however, the retrograde stations of Uranus have tended to bring blue-chip equity prices up. That's also true of several other key astrological factors at play this week, including the Mars/Kronos square in right ascension, the Sun/Pluto opposition, and the heliocentric Mercury/Neptune opposition. The heliocentric Mars/Neptune conjunction is also likely to have a net positive effect, even though it may bring stock prices down for a few days first. The Sun/Hades conjunction has a slightly negative bias for equity prices, but its net effect is essentially a toss-up.
In short, we're looking for stock prices to rise again this week, but we'll be keeping a lookout for surprises and special situations. On Friday we're planning for a short trading day, thanks to a void-of-course Moon that kicks in just before lunch and gives us an excuse to start the weekend early.
Have a great week!

STOCKS TO WATCH: BPT, HIG, JEC, PDE.
BP Prudhoe Bay Royalty Trust (BPT)
NYSE
First Trade Date: 05/23/1989; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: With transiting Saturn getting ready to cross the BPT First-Trade Ascendant, we're expecting to see a modest price pull-back during the next week or 10 days. The opportunity for such a short-term correction could come as Mercury transits First-Trade Chiron early this week, perhaps generating news that seems negative at first blush but that actually has longer-term positive implications. In any event, Venus will also be coming into the picture promptly, conjoining the First-Trade Mars/Vulcanus conjunction and then forming a sesquiquadrate to the First-Trade True Lunar Node. By early July transiting Jupiter will be crossing the BPT First-Trade IC, so there's definitely a happy ending to this story. Eighth-harmonic planetary lines for Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus (G,45,N,0) give us some interesting information here, with Saturn and Uranus providing potential resistance and Mars/Jupiter defining a potential entry point. Our plan is thus to enter a long position this week if BPT trades below 68.45; we will set our initial stop at 65.50.
The Hartford Financial Services Group Inc. (HIG)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 12/15/1995; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: With Saturn crossing the HIG First-Trade Descendant and stationary Uranus semisquare the First-Trade Ascendant, this stock is ready to pop. The longer-term outlook is strengthened considerably by transiting Pluto conjoining the First-Trade Sun and transiting Apollon conjoining the First-Trade True Lunar Node. Our plan is to add a long position in HIG to the Model Portfolio at the start of the trading week; our initial stop will be set at 70.50.
Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. (JEC)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 12/15/1989; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: Like HIG, JEC has transiting Saturn hitting the First-Trade Descendant, Uranus semisquare the First-Trade Ascendant, and Pluto conjoining the First-Trade Sun. In this case, however, there are added factors that make the outlook even more interesting. Transiting Neptune is conjoining the First-Trade True Lunar Node, transiting Chiron is hitting First-Trade Venus, and transiting Mercury is crossing First-Trade Jupiter, with transiting Jupiter getting ready to conjoin First-Trade Apollon in about six weeks. In other words, there is a lot of astrological evidence to support the idea of a long position. We will add one to the Model Portfolio early this week; our initial stop will be set at 51.75.
Pride International Inc. (PDE)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 09/10/1997; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: PDE went into a slide earlier this year as transiting Saturn first conjoined its First-Trade Midheaven and transiting Jupiter opposed its First-Trade Saturn, but now, as Saturn crosses the Midheaven again, we also get transiting Neptune square First-Trade Mars and transiting Pluto conjoining the First-Trade Moon. This adds up to a fairly volatile situation, bringing the possibility of either a dramatic run-up or a discouraging pull-back, but we nevertheless plan to enter a long position in PDE early this week, with an initial stop set at 21.45.
