FinancialCyclesWeekly.com #0523 -- June 5-11, 02005 with Tim Bost

COMMENT: We've just finished a week with lots of newsworthy events. While some of them had short-term impacts on the markets, many more were precursors of market conditions and economic trends to come. Some of them were disguised as Politics-As-Usual, while others were noteworthy as culminations of long-term cycles.

Since one of our purposes in this letter is to highlight trends that set the stage for potentially profitable trading rather than to provide in-depth news analysis about items the mainstream media have already overworked, we will do our best to keep our comments brief. Even so, with our commitment to "promoting an esoteric spiritual understanding of economic trends, geocosmic cycles, geopolitical events, and market movements," we don't like to leave things out. So please bear with us for a bit.

CONTINENTAL DRIFT

The big story, of course, is the situation in Europe. Last Sunday the voters in France's referendum soundly rejected ratification of the European constitution. Their lead was followed in kind a few days later by voters in the Netherlands. And by the end of the week the German magazine "Stern" was reporting on a secret meeting held a few days earlier in Berlin which included Finance Minister Hans Eichel and Bundesbank chief Axel Weber, among others. After hearing a report by Joachim Fels, Morgan Stanley's eurozone economist, the group discussed the possibility of abandoning the euro, apparently due to their concerns that the European single currency is doing irreparable damage to the German economy.

The immediate impact of all this, quite naturally, was to weaken the euro against the dollar. As we noted last week, the rally in the dollar may have "set the stage for shorting the greenback in anticipation of a euro reversal back to the upside." That's a situation we will be keeping an eye on, since we don't think the dollar is out of the woods yet.

WOODROW'S WOES

The events in Europe are also interesting from the perspective of long-range cycles. Eighty-four years ago or so, as the planet Uranus was transiting through roughly the same portion of the zodiac it is once again visiting today, there was another failed attempt at European unification. After the armistice of November 11, 1918 brought an end to fighting in Europe in World War I, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson presented the Paris Peace Conference with a draft proposal for a League of Nations which would essentially begin the process of uniting Europe under a single government. When he returned to the United States and shared the idea with the U.S. Congress, however, he met with unexpected opposition.

At first congressional leaders wanted the proposal for the League of Nations to be dealt with separately from the terms of the Treaty of Versailles, but Wilson insisted that the two were inseparable. Most of 1919 was spent with proposals and counter-proposals being debated in the Senate and with President Wilson frantically trying to drum up support for the League of Nations.

Senator Henry Cabot Lodge was opposed to the Charter for the League on the grounds that it would potentially commit the U.S. to military action without the specific consent of Congress, which is solely granted the power to declare war by the U.S. Constitution. Lodge took two weeks to read the entire text of the 246-page treaty aloud on the floor of the Senate, and then convened public hearings, bringing in 60 witnesses to discuss the matter.

President Wilson responded by launching a determined national tour aimed at convincing the American people that they should pressure their representatives into taking immediate favorable action on his proposal; Wilson gave 40 speeches in 29 cities in 22 days. His blitz ended with his collapsing in Pueblo, Colorado on September 25, 1919. On October 2 he suffered a stroke and was ill for the next seven months.

SEVEN SENATORS

On November 19, 1919, the Senate voted to reject the treaty with Senator Lodge's amended reservations. Later the same day, the Senate also voted to reject the treaty in its original form. Even so, the majority in the Senate insisted that the matter be brought to yet another vote, and after additional debate the Senate once again rejected the treaty and U.S. membership in the League of Nations on March 15, 1920, by a margin of only seven votes.

In the campaign for the presidency that fall, on September 5, 1920, candidate Warren G. Harding promised that if elected he would seek revisions in the terms of the Versailles Treaty so that the U.S. would be able to join the League of Nations. Harding was elected in a landslide victory on November 2, but then, on November 4, the president-elect declared that the League of Nations was "deceased." The U.S. subsequently signed separate treaties with Germany, Austria, and Hungary and declared an end to the state of war the following year. Then, on March 20, 1922 (with Uranus at 10 degrees, 39 minutes Pisces--the planet's exact position during the French referendum on May 29, 2005), President Harding ordered U.S. troops brought home from Europe.

THE SAME OLD STORY

A lot of this story sounds disturbingly familiar. There are delays in the Senate and opposition to a president's grandiose plans. There's a whirlwind national tour by the chief executive, who is fruitlessly trying to sway the people into going along with his point of view. There are seven Senators who won't go along with the president. There's a broken campaign promise. And above all there's the failure to unify nations under a single trans-governmental banner.

Today, as we deal with eroding European unity, with threats of filibusters and "nuclear options" in the Senate, with seven Republican Senators defying orders from the White House, and with President Bush making speeches aimed at convincing the public that there's a crisis in Social Security which trumps all concerns over a disastrous war, a struggling economy, and official U.S. policies that defy international law and prompt condemnation from human rights advocates, it's helpful to keep it all in perspective. After all, none of this is exactly new. And while our ignorance of history may in fact inevitably doom us to repeat it, an awareness of geocosmic cycles at least opens up the possibility of an alternative.

WATCH THE WATCHDOG

In other news, we learned last week that the Homeland Security Department has not only been keeping a lookout for terrorists; it has also been looking at itself with suspicion. In its 54-page semiannual report to Congress, the Department provided details of 325 internal audits, investigations, and inspections it conducted between October 2004 and March 2005. The efforts resulted in the arrests of 146 workers and grant recipients, and identified $18.5 million in unsupported costs during the six-month period. The violations that the Department was willing to admit to included unauthorized purchases, theft, bribery, and sexual abuse.

HISTORIC TONSILECTOMY

"I'm the guy they used to call Deep Throat." With those words from former FBI Deputy Director S. Mark Felt this past week, the longest-lasting mystery in Washington came to an abrupt end. The unexpected revelation stirred some interesting discussion about loyalties and patriotism, about freedom of the press and the confidentiality of sources.

Even more interesting, however, was what was NOT being talked about in the wake of Felt's announcement. Watergate was not just about news tips from Deep Throat or even just about attempts by the White House to cover up a bungled break-in. It was about massive corruption and criminal behavior in the Nixon administration, a pervasively malevolent atmosphere that promoted Dirty Tricks and Enemies Lists. It's not too surprising, then, that President Bush declined to comment on the Deep Throat story when the news of Mark Felt's revelation came out.

After all, the chairman of the Republican Party during Watergate was none other than Mr. Bush's father, George Herbert Walker Bush. He did his best to clean up the political ramifications of the mess, including a Dirty Tricks program conducted by the youthful College Republicans. At the top of that nefarious organization, of course, was none other than Karl Rove, the power behind the throne in the current presidential administration.

DOLLAR DOLDRUMS

Our recent notes on economic conditions provoked a comment from our friend Georgia Stathis, who said "there are a lot of factors" at work behind the scenes, including "the square of transiting Saturn (in its detriment) to the north nodes as well as the end of Saturn in Cancer, where people are at the end of this cycle and exhausted." Georgia also mentioned the continuing weakness in the dollar, which she says is in for "a serious decline." Georgia Stathis is the author of "Business Astrology 101"; you can find her on the web at www.starcycles.com.

THE POWER OF PRAYER

W. D. Gann not only used astrology in his market analysis; he also relied on the power of prayer and meditation as cornerstones of his trading. Gann said that he could trust his trading methodologies because of the insights he had gained through diligent Bible reading and study.

With that perspective in mind, it's intriguing to hear the story of Ramon Watkins in Las Vegas, Nevada, who says that reading the Old Testament in Hebrew has revealed to him a technique for summoning UFOs at will. According to Watkins, who is also known as Prophet Yahweh, the UFOs appear when he asks them to through prayer. He says he has personally seen 1,500 UFOs during the past 25 years, but has kept the fact a secret until the voices in his head recently told him to go to the news media with the story.

KNTV, the ABC-TV affiliate in Las Vegas, followed up on the story. Watkins agreed to meet with a reporter and cameraman and summon a UFO at a time and location of the station's choosing. Prophet Yahweh joined reporter Mike Dello Stritto and cameraman Jonathan Hawkins at Doolittle Park near West Lake Mead Boulevard in Las Vegas.

The Prophet Yahweh prayed on camera, and within moments a UFO appeared in the sky above their heads. A stunned Hawkins captured the object on video, and Dello Stritto phoned the station to report that the story had taken a slightly different turn than he had expected. Their report, aired on the 11 o'clock news on KNTV last week, is archived online at http://www.filecabi.net/v/file/ufoondemand/wmv.

TROUBLE AHEAD FOR IBM?

Financial astrologer Grace Morris, writing in the June issue of her AstroEconomics newsletter, suggests that upcoming Pluto transits during the next couple of years may make it "very difficult" for IBM to survive. Grace, who is the author of "How to Choose Stocks to Outperform the Market 2005," sends her newsletter out monthly via email. For more information, check her website at www.astroeconomics.com.

THE WEEK AHEAD

This week we will be looking for earnings reports from FuelCell Energy, Inc. (FCEL), Bob Evans Farms (BOBE), CMGI (CMGI), Jos. A Bank Clothiers (JOSB), CHC Helicopter (FLI), J. Crew Group Inc. (JCREW), Albertson's (ABS), Piedmont Natural Gas (PNY), H&R Block Inc. (HRB), Samsonite (SAMC), Bradley Pharmaceuticals (BDY), Sears Holdings Corporation (SHLD), MDS Inc. (MDZ), National Semiconductor (NSM), Navistar International (NAV), Shuffle Master (SHFL), and Toys R Us (TOY).

The economic news this week will be highlighted by reports on Consumer Credit, the Mortgage Bankers Association Purchase Applications, Wholesale Trade, Retail Chain Store Sales, Jobless Claims, Money Supply, Import and Export Prices, and International Trade. Alan Greenspan will be speaking on Tuesday, which is an event that should overshadow all the other economic news.

Astrologically, with a Jupiter station and a New Moon to kick off the week, there is much to support a positive bias in the markets right now. Even though Tuesday night's Mercury/Pluto opposition may bring some tension, it's likely that the Sun/Neptune trine during the wee hours of Wednesday morning will hold sway, keeping an optimistic mood afloat. By the end of the week, however, with a Mercury/Mars square at work and both planets getting ready to change signs over the weekend, we could see a decided shift in market temperament and a sell-off as trading draws to a close.

With a void-of-course Moon during the last couple of hours of trading on Tuesday, we take a break from the market activity. As we set up our trades throughout the week, we will be paying particular attention to fourth-harmonic heliocentric planetary lines (H,90,N,0) for Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, Chiron, Apollon, Zeus, Kronos and Poseidon.

Have a great week!

STOCKS TO WATCH: GI, BTU, SRZ, UBB, ZGEN.

Giant Industries, Inc. (GI)
NYSE
First Trade Date: 12/15/1989; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: With Pluto currently conjunct the GI First-Trade Sun, there are powerful influences at work on the price of this stock. We like the looks of transiting Saturn conjoining the GI First-Trade Descendant as well, since it can help provide a solid basis for future price appreciation. Short term, transiting Mercury is hitting First-Trade Kronos, so an immediate long position is in order. We will buy this stock early this week, setting our initial stop at 28.25.

Peabody Energy (BTU)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 05/22/2001; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: Transiting Apollon is forming a nice Grand Trine with the BTU First-Trade Mercury and First-Trade Uranus, giving this stock some strong long-term positive energy. With Saturn currently conjoining the First-Trade Ascendant and the transiting Sun about to conjoin First-Trade Jupiter, this is definitely the time to add a long position in this stock. Our plan is to do so early this week, setting our initial stop at 47.50.

Sunrise Senior Living Inc. (SRZ)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 05/23/2001; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: The First-Trade chart for SRZ is virtually identical to the one for BTU, since this stock started trading just one day later. All of our comments about BTU also apply to this stock as well. The big difference in the two horoscopes, however, is the placement of the First-Trade Moon. In the case of SRZ it is perfectly positioned to receive a trine from transiting Jupiter as it makes its current station. This adds an extra positive dynamic to the trading prospects for this stock, so we will put on a long position early this week. Our initial stop will be set at 50.75.

Unibanco Uniao De Bancos (UBB)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 05/22/1997; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: The transiting Sun is currently conjunct the UBB First-Trade Hades, so we wouldn't be surprised to see a bit of a price pullback in this stock as the trading week gets underway. If so, we will definitely consider it a buying opportunity, since transiting Jupiter is stationary now, conjoining the First-Trade IC. At the same time, transiting Saturn is conjoining the UBB First-Trade Ascendant, so this stock should continue to show some significant strength. Our plan is to add a long position early in the trading week, setting our initial stop at 35.00.

Zymogenetics Inc. (ZGEN)
NASDAQ; optionable
First Trade Date: 02/01/2002; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: Transiting Neptune is currently conjoining the ZGEN First-Trade Venus, adding an aura of attractiveness to this stock. That illusory presence helps make Jupiter's current stationary conjunction with the First-Trade Descendant more appealing. The only problem is that there's nothing backing Jupiter up, and even though it's moving slowly right now, it won't hang around that First-Trade angle for long. This all adds up to a good shorting opportunity, so we plan to sell ZGEN short by mid-week. We will set our initial buy stop at 19.25.
