COMMENT: The trading action in the equities markets has continued to be frustrating for many participants, mainly because of the market's stubborn refusal to resolve itself into a clearly definable trending pattern. While the price action has indeed shown net gains during the past few weeks, the day-to-day activity has been extremely choppy and congested, making it difficult for traders to reap the kind of profits they've become accustomed to in recent years.
Even the recent overall positive direction of the market has to be taken with a grain of salt right now, since most market averages are still a long way from challenging the highs they set near the beginning of the year. In other words, even though stock prices are moving up, the confusing and often contradictory indicators and the unenthusiastic trading action are keeping this from feeling much like a rally at all.
A NOTABLE EXCEPTION
But not everything is uniformly glum. Right now some of the brightest spots on the technical charts from around the globe are coming from Europe. Both the Frankfurt DAX Index and the Paris CAC-40 set new highs for the year this past week, and we see little reason to doubt that the positive trend will continue as trading gets underway in the week ahead.
As we were preparing this week's issue, we learned that voters in France had declined to ratify the European Union constitution. This "no" vote will not only make the ratification voting in the Netherlands more closely watched later in the week; it is also likely to produce a reaction in the euro as well.
Keep an eye on that situation. With the dollar regaining strength against other currencies lately, a dip in the euro's fortunes right now could be just the thing that some of the bolder currency speculators are looking for.
A noticeable downward move in the euro would bring the dollar up, which might in turn set the stage for shorting the greenback in anticipation of a euro reversal back to the upside. After all, the euro is not going away, and there are a number of reasons to be less than enthusiastic about the future prospects for the dollar.
A BREAK IN THE ACTION
With U.S. markets closed for Memorial Day and trading shut down in Great Britain as well to observe a banking holiday, we are releasing this week's newsletter a few hours later than usual. Our regular publication schedule will resume next week, with the letter going out prior to New York's opening bell.

THE WEEK AHEAD
This is a short trading week, but we should still get earnings reports from Terex Corporation (TEX), Abiomed, Inc. (ABMD), Comverse Technology (CMVT), Copart (CPRT), Alloy (ALOY), Ciena (CIEN), Jackson Hewitt (JTX), Smithfield Foods (SFD), and Neiman Marcus Group (NMGA).
The economic news is likely to focus on the May Consumer Confidence figures, the Chicago Purchasing Managers Index for May, the April report on Construction Spending, the Institute for Supply Management Manufacturing Index, April Factory Orders, May Motor Vehicle Sales, May Nonfarm Payrolls and Unemployment, and the revised report on First-Quarter Productivity. The week will include market holidays on Monday in the U.S. and Great Britain, a vote on the European Union constitution in the Netherlands (as we're preparing this report we've just learned that France has voted against ratifying the constitution), and a meeting of the European Central Bank. Paul Wolfowitz will start his new job as head of the World Bank on Wednesday.
The astrological picture for the coming week is decidedly mixed. The weekend's Venus/Pluto opposition is a factor that typically brings stock prices down somewhat, but with Monday providing a break from the market action due to the holiday, this aspect's influence may be a bit muted by the time trading resumes on Tuesday.
With Tuesday's trading we will move into the mildly negative dynamics created by the Sun/Cupido opposition and the Sun/Uranus square, but a void-of-course Moon that afternoon will encourage us to step aside from trading activity. This means we will either be putting on positions on Tuesday morning or waiting until Wednesday to get a better picture of market trends.
The middle of the week is noteworthy because of the large number of eclipse activations, a factor that sets the stage for extra volatility, news-driven market action, and potential trend reversals. If the reversals do in fact come, they are likely to be a rebound from a brief corrective period during the week's initial trading sessions, since the planetary dynamics toward the end of the week are more positive in tone.
All in all, then, we are looking for a week that have its share of tensions and frustration in and out of the markets, but that will resolve into a modest gain for share prices before the close on Friday.
Have a great week!

SPIRITUAL FOCUS FOR THE WEEK
The greatest traders have all understood that emotional balance is the key to successful trading. Through Practical Spiritual Astrology we have an opportunity to restore inner harmony, enhance emotional balance, and make wiser choices in the markets.
If we push too hard in our efforts to achieve perfection, we run the risk of indulging in power struggles. It's far better right now to remember that our purpose is to express spiritual abundance and to promote harmonious communication, in spite of the explosive conflicts that surround us.

STOCKS TO WATCH: DHI, GYI, LNY, RIMG.
D. R. Horton Inc. (DHI)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 12/14/1995; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: Horton is a hot home builder that has seen substantial price appreciation since the first of the year. What caught our attention most recently, however, is the fact that it gapped up in last week's trading to break through an important resistance zone. DHI did so just as transiting Saturn was crossing its First-Trade Descendant, which suggests that this move could have a solid foundation under it. There's also some encouragement from transiting Pluto hitting the DHI First-Trade Sun/Jupiter midpoint, so we will be adding a long position during this trading week. Our initial stop will be set at 32.00.
Getty Images Inc. (GYI)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 11/05/2002; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: Transiting Jupiter is moving into position to make its direct station in exact conjunction to the GYI First-Trade Midheaven. What could be more appealing? The extra boost to the price of this stock may be short-lived, but we definitely want to take advantage of the situation, so we plan to add a long position in GYI to the Model Portfolio early this week. Our initial stop will be set at 75.00.
Landry's Restaurants Inc. (LNY)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 12/14/1999; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: There are a couple of relevant horoscopes to observe in looking at LNY. The 1999 date listed above is for the listing of the stock on the New York Stock Exchange; the company's CEO personally rang the NYSE opening bell the day that trading started there. But Landry's original IPO was on August 19, 1993, and the stock was actually first traded publicly on the following day (08/20/1993; 09:30 a.m.). Right now, as Saturn is transiting the Descendant of the 1999 chart, the original 1993 horoscope is in the midst of a Jupiter return. That's an important factor to consider here, since the price for LNY rose into the first pass of Jupiter (in direct motion) at the end of November, 2004, and fell sharply right after the transit. When transiting Jupiter made its second conjunction with First-Trade Jupiter, this time in retrograde motion on April 10 of this year, LNY traded flat into the aspect, and then once again declined in price as the transit passed. The third and final passage of transiting Jupiter won't come until the end of July, with Jupiter again in direct motion. During last week's trading this stock moved back to the price level it was trading at during the first Jupiter passage, and it seems likely that it will continue to advance from there. Aside from the Saturn transit to the 1999 First-Trade angle, it's also instructive to watch the action right now of transiting Mars and the transiting True Lunar Node. The Lunar Node is currently square the 1993 First-Trade Venus, and simultaneously in opposition to the 1999 First-Trade Apollon. Transiting Mars is completing a Grand Trine pattern with First-Trade Venus and the First-Trade Pluto/Cupido conjunction in the 1993 chart; at the same time Mars is completing a Grand Trine with First-Trade Vulcanus and the First-Trade Midheaven in the 1999 chart. With all that action going on, our plan is to add a long position to the Model Portfolio early in the trading week, with an initial stop set at 27.05.
Rimage Corporation (RIMG)
NASDAQ
First Trade Date: 11/05/1992; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: Like Getty, RIMG also has transiting Jupiter conjoining the First-Trade Midheaven as it makes a station. In this case, however, there's even more support for short-term positive price action: transiting Pluto is ready to conjoin the First-Trade True Lunar Node, while First-Trade Kronos is receiving a trine from transiting Apollon and a conjunction from transiting Venus. Our plan is to enter a long position early in the week; we will set our initial stop at 21.25.
