COMMENT: The latest economic figures, not only from Washington, but also from around the world, are anything but rosy. The most recent numbers in the reports from the Philadelphia Fed and the Empire State were unexpectedly grim, while the University of Michigan sentiment indicator showed that there's little confidence among consumers in the likelihood of an economic recovery.

Former Dallas Fed Governor Robert McTeer told CNBC that the Federal Reserve may be concerned enough about the economy to anticipate getting near the end of its series of interest rate hikes. Even Fed Chairman Alan Greenspan admitted that the over-speculated real estate market is getting a bit "frothy," although Mr. Greenspan is still apparently in denial about the issue, insisting that froth is not actually some sort of a bubble.

But the news from Europe was also worrisome. The French GDP was much weaker than expected, and Italian Industrial Orders were down sharply, too. In Great Britain, Consumer Credit dropped by ₤40 million, the biggest plunge in over a decade.

Also in Britain, the Office for National Statistics reported that retail sales for the last three months were essentially flat, up just 0.2% for the quarter. That number actually managed to look optimistic, however, when it was compared to reports from three of the country's most prestigious retailers: Boots, Next, and Sainsbury's.

Boots reported that pre-tax profits were down by 11%, but when exceptional costs were added to the picture the firm's actual drop in profits was 26%. On the same day, Next warned investors that its sales were down by 6.3% during the first 15 weeks of 2005.

But the worst news of all came from Sainsbury's, reporting a 97.5% plunge in profits. It was the firm's biggest loss in profits in 135 years.

SO WHERE'S THE BEAR?

With such a catastrophic panorama on the economic horizon, just exactly what does the stock market think it's doing? After all, stocks have started rallying again, with equity markets in the U.S. putting in their best week in six months. Share prices are also looking pretty good in most of the world's other markets, at least good enough to keep investors paying attention. So what's going on?

First, it's helpful to remember that the markets anticipate economic activity, and not the other way around. A combination of lousy economic numbers and some enthusiasm in the equities markets is not as much of an anomaly as it may seem. But there's also some manipulation going on. By focusing on declining oil prices and a strengthening dollar, the forces that drive the markets can whip up a convincing argument that owning shares is a good thing, so everybody ought to be doing it. As usual the market needs a pool of potential bag-holders who are ready to put their money into stocks.

Make no mistake about it. The market needs a lot of naïve money to keep this rally rolling. After all, those "declining" oil prices are still historically high, and steep prices at the pump impact every part of the economy. The "strengthening" dollar is also remarkably weak, and if the Fed is in fact beginning to be concerned about a slowdown and starts to ease up on its current tightening stance, the greenback will be even less attractive in the world's markets. In the absence of a new Bretton Woods Agreement, an outright currency collapse is a real possibility. If that happens, the bag-holders will be left holding a much bigger bag than they ever bargained for.

Finally, we would be remiss if we failed to mention the astrological dynamics at work behind the scenes. We did in fact accurately forecast this rally well before it got underway, thanks to our use of market astrology. After all, that's one of the unique points of focus that we bring to the markets, and time and again we find that we can rely on planetary energies to give us significant clues about market directions and appropriate strategies. In this case, it's the Neptune station that's at play. Neptune is the planet most strongly associated with illusion and deception, and right now that symbolic heritage is particularly apropos. There may not be active deception going on in the markets right now (although there probably is), but there's certainly plenty of illusion!

RED AND BLUE BASES

Last week we reported on the potential economic impact of the Pentagon's decision to shut down military bases across the country. It turns out, however, that the anticipated loss of jobs will not impact the country uniformly.

Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) questioned last week why states that opposed President Bush's reelection (the so-called blue states) will be losing nearly 25,000 jobs with the closings, while the red states, the ones that voted in favor of President Bush's reelection last fall, didn't show a net loss at all, but will actually experience a net gain of 11,000 jobs.

The Pentagon has denied that politics were involved in the breakdown of the Base Realignment and Closure plan. "My hope was that these decisions were completely removed from politics," Senator Lautenberg said, "but the total numbers do raise some questions."

AN EVEN DARKER DARK SIDE

The new Star Wars movie is smashing all box office records, much to the delight of the entertainment industry. There's another new film out, however, that hasn't generated nearly as much attention at the box office or from the media. Even so, "Enron: the Smartest Guys in the Room," Alex Gibney's new documentary, is still a must-see movie.

The film is based on the best-selling book by Fortune magazine reporters Bethany McLean and Peter Elkind, but it does an even better job than the book in making the Enron debacle come alive. The incredible hubris, the phantasmagoric bookkeeping, the staggering arrogance and abuse of political connections, and the ghastly human consequences of the corrupt house of cards are all here to see.

Gibney's deft film editing and a beautifully understated voice-over narration by Peter Coyote combine nicely to produce a memorable and fascinating movie-watching experience. But what makes "Enron: the Smartest Guys in the Room" even more impressive is the fact that Gibney has not only brought together footage from CNBC and from CSPAN coverage of Congressional hearings to combine with his interviews with McLean, Elkind, and various former Enron employees--he has also gotten his hands on in-house video footage from company meetings. As we get to watch Kenneth Lay and Jeffrey Skilling boast brazenly about the company's innovation and invincibility during the Enron glory years, the effect is especially chilling.

You won't find "Enron: the Smartest Guys in the Room" showing on quite as many screens as "Episode Three: Revenge of the Sith." But by all means try to find a screening and see this film. Whether you need some help putting together the complexities of this greatest of all corporate crimes, or even if you just need a little refresher before Jeffrey Skilling and Kenneth Lay go on trial next year, you're sure to find it an especially entertaining way of getting the information.

KICK ASS CONNECTIONS

Speaking of movies, it's interesting to note that President Bush will be hosting a dinner in Washington on June 14, and porn star Mary Carey has been invited to attend. Carey, who was one of the candidates in the California recall election for governor in the fall of 2003, will be joined at the event by her boss, Mark Kulkis, the president of Kick Ass Pictures, a producer of hardcore adult videos.

Kulkis and Carey will be in the nation's capitol not only to join Mr. Bush at the dinner, but also to attend two days of events sponsored by the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC). Among other things, the NRCC is giving the two an opportunity to meet with presidential advisor Karl Rove, so they can voice their opinions on key national issues.

Mark Kulkis serves as an Honorary Chairman on the NRCC's Business Advisory Council. "I'm honored to be invited to this event," he said. "Republicans bill themselves as the pro-business party. Well, you won't find a group of people more pro-business than pornographers. We contributed over $10 billion to the national economy last year."

THE WEEK AHEAD

During the coming week we will be paying attention to earnings reports from Campbell Soup (CPB), McData Corporation (MCDTA), Medtronic (MDT), Network Appliance (NTAP), Toro (TTC), Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC), Petco Animal Supplies (PETC), Brown-Forman Corporation (BFB), AutoZone (AZO), Novell (NOVL), Kerr-McGee (KMG), Dollar General Corporation (DG), H. J. Heinz Company (HNZ), Costco (COST), Computer Associates International (CA), Guidant (GDT), Lockheed Martin (LMT), Newmont Mining (NEM), Eastman Kodak (EK), and Schering-Plough (SGP).

The world of economic news should feature reports on Existing Home Sales, Durable Goods Orders, New Home Sales, Personal Income, Consumption, and the First-Quarter GDP. We'll also be getting a fresh look at Consumer Sentiment from the University of Michigan. The Federal Reserve will be releasing the minutes of its May meeting on Tuesday; the document will be closely perused for hints on future interest rate policy. Fed Governor Ben Bernanke will be appearing before a Senate committee on Wednesday; the panel is considering his nomination to the President's Council of Economic Advisors. Treasury Secretary John Snow will be in front of the Senate Banking Committee on Thursday; given some of the current concerns about the dollar, he may not get an entirely welcome reception.

Aside from an intense Full Moon on Monday, the astrological picture this week is still mainly colored by last Thursday's Neptune station. That's a cloudy, confusing energy, and our guess is that the confusion will work in favor of sustaining the current rally for at least another week. That bullish assumption is underwritten in part by Monday's waxing Venus/Neptune trine and heliocentric Mercury/Jupiter opposition, both of which show good historical correlations with rising markets. The real driver of a continued rally, however, is next weekend's Venus/Pluto opposition. It tends to act strongly before the actual aspect occurs, and has brought the Dow Industrials up about two-thirds of the time during the past century. So we expect the rally to continue this week.

On a day-to-day basis, we will be keeping an eye on the lunar voids, using them as we typically do to step aside from active trading so we can refresh our energies and gain a more balanced perspective on the markets by seeing them from the outside. A void-of-course Moon kicks off the action this week on Monday morning. It's followed on Wednesday by a brief intraday void in the afternoon, and by another one on Friday that sets the stage for an extended lunch break. Throughout the week, we will be paying particular attention to fifth harmonic heliocentric planetary lines in our trading set-ups, using lines for Mercury, Chiron, Hades, Mars, Neptune, Venus, Cupido, and the Earth, all set at (H,72,N,0) or (H,72,N,-2) on the Fibonacci Trader/Galactic Trader software.

Have a great week!

STOCKS TO WATCH: CPSI, FRNT, MVL, PHLY.

Computer Programs and Systems (CPSI)
NASDAQ
First Trade Date: 05/20/2002; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: This stock gapped up dramatically a few weeks ago and has been busy since then establishing a new trading range. Saturn is getting ready to cross the CPSI First-Trade Ascendant, however, just as transiting Venus is conjoining First-Trade Saturn and the transiting True Lunar South Node conjoins First-Trade Apollon. We're not sure that the enthusiasm for this stock will wear off immediately, but we feel confident enough that CPSI is heading for a correction that we plan to sell it short. We'll do so early in this trading week, setting our initial buy stop at 35.75.

Frontier Airlines Inc. (FRNT)
NASDAQ; optionable
First Trade Date: 05/20/1994; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: Here's another stock with Saturn currently transiting the First-Trade Ascendant. With FRNT, however, the overall situation looks positive, mainly because FRNT is trying to penetrate a resistance zone set near the end of last year. In addition to Saturn's current action, FRNT is also currently experiencing transiting Uranus conjoining First-Trade Saturn, along with transiting Poseidon conjoining First-Trade Jupiter. With that in mind, we'll be entering a long position in FRNT early this week; we'll set our initial stop at 10.25.

Marvel Enterprises Inc. (MVL)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 02/23/1995; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: Spiderman and company have apparently got a good thing going on, as this stock attests. Transiting Saturn is getting ready to cross the MVL First-Trade IC, setting the stage for future growth that could be even more rapid and more solid than the expansion the company has already seen. The kicker is transiting Jupiter, getting ready to make a direct station in an exact trine to the MVL First-Trade Mercury, with transiting Pluto forming a semi-square to the First-Trade True Lunar Node. Our plan is thus to add a long position in MVL to the Model Portfolio this week, with an initial stop set at 18.25.

Philadelphia Consolidated Holding Company (PHLY)
NASDAQ
First Trade Date: 09/17/1993; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: This stock is getting a lot of action right now. Transiting Apollon is conjunct First-Trade Mars, transiting Jupiter is conjoining First-Trade Mercury and transiting Pluto is forming a square to the First-Trade Sun and a sextile to First-Trade Saturn. This looks like a solid opportunity, and with PHLY breaking out of its trading range to the upside this looks like a good time to enter the trade. Our plan is to add a long position around the middle of the week; we'll set our initial stop at 74.00.
