FinancialCyclesWeekly.com #0518 -- May 1-7, 02005 with Tim Bost
COMMENT: The stock market entertained traders last week by repeatedly singing "What a Difference a Day Makes" as it flip-flopped back and forth between positive and negative territory in consecutive trading sessions. Maybe the one-step-forward, two-steps-back serenade was inspired because it was a good news/bad news sort of week, but even more fundamentally we see it as a sign that the market quite simply can't make up its mind about the direction it's heading in.
After all, the good news wasn't all that good, and the bad news wasn't really news. It was the "same old same old"--continuing deficits, a weakening economic picture with the usual equivocation and denials, hints of increasing inflation, and a war that continues to be more costly in lives and in dollars than anyone is comfortable with. President Bush tried to put a happy face on his completely disastrous attempt to sell the American people on his proposed Social Security reform, with opposition to his plan mounting and his popularity sagging to an all-time low. In fact, according to some reports, he is now the least popular second-term president on record.
That's not to say that a reversal in Mr. Bush's personal ratings would necessarily have a positive impact on the stock market; there are no guarantees in that department. While a sudden rush of affection for America's cowboy hero might carry over into Wall Street, there are still more basic issues to be concerned about--declining durable goods orders, retail sales and consumer confidence for example, not to mention the worst GDP performance in two years.
And while all these matters certainly bring cause for concern, it's also wise to remember that the markets typically react before the economy as a whole does. So while we may be seeing the signs of economic troubles ahead, it's still entirely possible that the markets may go into a bout of unbridled enthusiasm, at least for the short term. All it would take would be a wink from Greenspan and Company or something equally as seductive, and an unmistakable trend could emerge.
There are also astrological factors at work that support the notion of a short-term rally; we have described them in some detail in this letter's section on The Week Ahead. But in spite of these reassuring hints and the potential that they bring for profit enhancement, our overall posture remains heavily weighted on the side of caution right now. There are so many fundamental economic weaknesses that present big vulnerabilities, and the market has shown its talent at fickleness so adroitly recently, that our best advice for traders is to keep meditating regularly, to take lots of deep breaths during the trading day, and to stay very, very alert.

THE WEEK AHEAD
There will be plenty of earnings reports to follow this week, including Avon, Tyco, Emerson, Safeway, Time Warner, Prudential, Duke Energy, Synmantec, Gillette, and Clorox. We will also get news on March Construction Spending, March Factory Orders, First Quarter Productivity, March Consumer Credit, April Unemployment and Nonfarm Payrolls, Chain Store Sales, and Automobile Sales, as well as the ISM Index for April. The big event, however, will be the meeting of the Federal Reserve Open Market Committee on Tuesday. While another interest rate increase is virtually a certainty, any inkling of a positive attitude from the Fed could trigger a significant market rally.
From the astrological perspective, we will have several things to stay focused on this week. First of all, several lunar voids will chop up the effectiveness of our trading week, around the opening bell on Monday, until the end of the trading session on Wednesday, and throughout the entire trading day on Friday. We will stay away from active trading during those times. On Tuesday, May 3, we get two Venus aspects that are often associated with positive action in the Dow: Venus sextile Saturn and Venus quintile Uranus. In both cases we anticipate choppy or slightly downward trending market action to resolve into an upward surge by May 4.
Most of our attention, however, is focused on the coming weekend of May 7-8. First we have a New Moon which will be square Neptune: the Sun/Neptune square is associated with rising prices in the Dow, and the New Moon should give this aspect extra strength. Next we get the Sun biquintile Pluto and heliocentric Mars semisquare heliocentric Uranus. Both of these aspects are also typically followed by a rally in the Dow. Finally, as the weekend comes to a close, we will have a Chiron retrograde station. This phenomenon typically sees the Dow declining into the station, and then rising sharply afterwards.
On balance, then, despite the likelihood of treacherous trading conditions and sharp declines early this week, we are anticipating a fairly decisive shift into a short-term rally in U.S. equities as we work our way into the weekend. We will be watching our stops fairly closely, especially on our short positions, and will be alert to fresh opportunities in our Watch List and in the broader market as well. If a rally does get underway by the end of this week or early next week, we would expect it to bring a significant opportunity for short-term profits, since it's likely to last until about the third week in May or possibly into early June.
Have a great week!

SPIRITUAL FOCUS FOR THE WEEK
The greatest traders have all understood that emotional balance is the key to successful trading. Through Practical Spiritual Astrology we have an opportunity to restore inner harmony, enhance emotional balance, and make wiser choices in the markets.
There is no more potent spiritual force available to us than the power of our own imagination. As we learn to open ourselves to the infinite expressions of divine intelligence that surround us, we can transcend everything that we have allowed to hold us back.
"Civilization no longer needs to open up wilderness; it needs wilderness to open up the still largely unexplored human mind." -- David Rains Wallace

STOCKS TO WATCH: CNXS, CYN, EFX, TXU.
C N S Inc. (CNXS)
NASDAQ
First Trade Date: 06/11/1987; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: There are several dramatic astrological factors at work with this stock, suggesting that there's additional upside potential here for active traders. First of all, transiting Jupiter has just connected with the CNXS First-Trade Apollon, suggesting that further profitable expansion is in the works. In the meantime, the transiting lunar node has just conjoined First-Trade Jupiter, so the time is right for favorable connections. Finally, transiting Pluto is conjoining First-Trade Uranus, adding some extra power to the mix. Our plan is to add a long position in this stock to the Model Portfolio early this week; we will set our initial stop at 13.95.
City National Corporation (CYN)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 05/17/1990; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: CYN has a first-trade horoscope commanded by a grand trine between the Sun in Taurus, Saturn in Capricorn, and Zeus in Virgo. That grand trine is currently being activated by transiting Pluto, which is square First-Trade Zeus and quincunx the First-Trade Sun. This looks like a powerful and positive combination, with the added kicker of transiting Saturn currently conjoining the First-Trade Ascendant to help create a solid price base. Our plan is to add a long position during the first half of the trading week, setting our initial stop at 66.75.
Equifax Inc. (EFX)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 05/11/1971; 10:00 a.m.
Trading Strategy: Could it be the recent changes in the bankruptcy laws that have made this stock so appealing? Perhaps so, but there are some astrological factors we like the looks of as well, including transiting Saturn's position on the EFX First-Trade Ascendant, transiting Jupiter passing over First-Trade Uranus, and transiting Venus crossing the First-Trade Sun. Our plan is to add a long position in EFX this week. We will set our initial stop at 29.50.
TXU Corporation (TXU)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 02/13/1951; 10:00 a.m.
Trading Strategy: Transiting Saturn is on its way to a passage over the TXU First-Trade IC this week, so the recently slowing in this utility company's long positive climb could be just a sign of positive consolidation. We're also looking at Jupiter's contact with First-Trade Poseidon and the rapid passage of Venus over the First-Trade Moon/Kronos conjunction. This could be an interesting play; we will add a long position this week, with an initial stop set at 81.25.
