FinancialCyclesWeekly.com #0517 -- April 24-30, 02005 with Tim Bost

COMMENT: Even though the American markets recovered some lost ground last week, the overall outlook remains decidedly bearish at this point. There's enough underlying weakness in fundamental economic structures, and enough evidence of inflationary pressures, to suggest that some real caution is called for right now in the stock market.

With that in mind, we're looking for short-swing rallies to unfold, offering some brief scalping opportunities and playing havoc with short positions. Trading in this environment will take enormous mental focus and intestinal fortitude. Above all, we need to be careful not to believe that upward price movement is the sign of a market advance of major proportions. This is not a bull about to charge; in fact this market is making noises that sound a lot like growling.

THE INSIDE SCOOP

It has been both amusing and a little bit distressing to see the reaction of the news media to the death of Pope John Paul and to the process of choosing a new pontiff. There has been ample attention paid to the pomp and ceremony, to the protocol and politics of the funeral, to the splendor of the rituals and the vestments, and to the secrecy surrounding the vote in the College of Cardinals. There has been a lot of commentary on the personal history and personality of Pope Benedict XVI, ranging from discussions of the role that his anti-abortion stance played in the failure of John Kerry to gain the U.S. presidency to comments on the ways that his background with the Nazis prepared him to be a rigorous enforcer of church dogma. The British tabloids wasted no time in getting into the fray, with the Daily Telegraph announcing that "God's rottweiler is the new Pope" and the banner headline on the Sun reading "From Hitler Youth to PAPA RATZI."

In spite of the media's eagerness to dissect the event, however, there's been one element plainly missing: an genuine awareness of the spiritual dimensions within and behind the news. This obliviousness transcends the muddled thinking that confuses celebrity and sainthood; it's symptomatic of the media's need for conflict and the "inside scoop." And while we might agree, for example, that an understanding of the economic and political entanglements of the Holy See is certainly worthwhile in forecasting geopolitical trends in and out of the markets, we are not particularly encouraged by the perspectives we've encountered in the recent news coverage of the current transitions in Rome.

The real inside scoop, of course, is one of spiritual integrity, and that's what is boldly evident in the new pontiff's natal horoscope (April 16, 1927, 4:15 a.m., Marktl, Germany). While the public image of the man may emphasize administrative capabilities and hard-line adherence to dogma, there's a lot more here than meets the eye. As we like to remind our readers, a strong spiritual focus is a key component in successful trading. Needless to say, it's even more important in filling vacancies at the Vatican!

THE WEEK AHEAD

There's a full slate of earnings reports (DD, BA, BUD, SBUX, XOM, MSFT, among others) this week, as well as economic news on Home Sales, Consumer Confidence, Durable Goods, Personal Income, and GDP. We'll get the Purchasing Managers Index numbers and the Sentiment report from the University of Michigan.
In other words, there's a lot to keep the pundits chatting and the markets churning.

Astrologically, as we come off the weekend's lunar eclipse, we will see much more clearly the manifestations of key issues that have been sweep under the rug recently. Expect some unsettled action in the markets and the media because of this, but remember that the smart money has already discounted the underlying realities. The astrological hot spot for the week comes on Wednesday, when we have a heliocentric Mars/Jupiter square and Venus activating an eclipse point. Look for extra market volatility then!

Have a great week!

STOCKS TO WATCH: CBG, CRR, SRX, WWCA.

CB Richard Ellis Services (CBG)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 11/07/1997; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: Retrograde Jupiter is moving across the CBG First-Trade Midheaven with Chiron conjoining First-Trade Uranus, suggesting that this stock could break through resistance and turn in some surprisingly good results. Our plan is to add a long position early this week, with an initial stop set at 31.65.

Carbo Ceramics Inc. (CRR)
NYSE
First Trade Date: 05/24/2000; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: Transiting Admetos is conjoining the CRR First-Trade Saturn/Jupiter conjunction, creating a slow, rock-solid foundation for future growth. That configuration has coincided with CRR moving in a 15-point trading range between 62 and 77 during the past year, following its strong run-up in late 2003 and early 2004. The stock's latest upward swing has coincided with Jupiter crossing a First-Trade angle; Saturn, meanwhile, is applying to the First-Trade Lunar Node/Vulcanus midpoint. Our expectation is that we will see an addition price gain early this week; we will use it as an opportunity to sell CRR short. Our initial buy stop will be set at 73.15.

SRA International Inc. (SRX)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 05/24/2002; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: We don't have much trading history to go on here, but nevertheless there are some salient factors that command our attention. With transiting Jupiter on an angle, transiting Mars conjoining First-Trade Uranus, and transiting Mercury crossing the First-Trade Midheaven, we're looking for this stock's current price surge to continue. We plan to add a long position early this week, setting our initial stop at 60.50.

Western Wireless Corporation Class A (WWCA)
NASDAQ; optionable
First Trade Date: 05/23/1996; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: Transiting Mercury is currently at the WWCA First-Trade Saturn/Midheaven midpoint, so we're likely to see a bit of price pullback in this stock early this week. If so, we will take it as the precursor to a buying opportunity. Our plan is to add a long position in this stock toward the end of this week, in anticipation of more upside action as May gets underway. When we do put on the position, we will set a generous initial stop at 37.70.
