FinancialCyclesWeekly.com #0511 -- March 13-19, 02005 with Tim Bost

COMMENT: Last week proved to be a memorable one for business and the markets. Martha Stewart enjoyed her first week of freedom as a substantially richer woman than she had been when she went to prison last fall. Boeing gave the axe to Chief Executive Harry Stonecipher for fear that his inner office hanky-panky would make it more difficult for the company to get approval for more government contracts. Bill Gates managed to hang onto his title as the world's richest man, and Microsoft made headlines when it announced its acquisition of Groove Networks, a move rooted in Gates' desire to bring Groove CEO Ray Ozzie on board at Microsoft. Apparently he hadn't been able to persuade Ozzie, whose claim to fame includes the development of Lotus Notes, to resign his post and join the Microsoft ranks, so he bought the entire company, with Ozzie coming along as part of the package.

On Capitol Hill, the average debt-ridden consumer got a low blow from the millionaire-laden U.S. Senate when it finally passed a new bankruptcy act, making it easier for credit card companies to enforce usurious rates and more difficult for individuals to discharge debts in times of unemployment or personal crisis. In spite of an outcry from consumer groups, the House of Representatives is expected to tag along obediently, and President Bush has said he will sign the bill into law when it hits his desk.

It was also an interesting week for share prices. After hitting a three-and-a-half-year high the previous week, U.S. stocks started out with a brief run to the upside. That didn't last long, however, and the market direction promptly reversed, with stocks ending down for the week. We had noted last week that "we believe that the joyride on Wall Street is about to come to an end," but we frankly didn't expect to see it hit the brakes quite so suddenly. The publicly-acknowledged culprits were our old friends higher oil prices (which hit a new record high) and the staggering budget deficit (which zoomed to a new high at $114 billion for the month of February alone). While we may see a brief rebound for stocks and while there are still cherries to be picked in this market, we are definitely in a trading environment that requires extreme caution.

A NEW HEAD MOUSE
The weekend also brought news that Walt Disney Company (DIS) chief executive Michael D. Eisner will be stepping down earlier than previously planned. The controversial CEO will be replaced in September, 2005 by Robert A. Iger, who was promoted to second-in-command at Disney less than two months ago. Iger has been president of Disney since 2000; prior to that he was president and chief operating officer for Capital Cities/ABC.

The biggest potential challenge with Iger's appointment as the Disney CEO is that he will prove to be too much of the same thing. After a couple of decades shadowing Michael Eisner, Iger is unlikely to be hasty in bringing about massive change, and that fact concerns some large shareholders. To be effective in his new post, Iger will at least have to get past the perception that he is simply moving forward with Eisner's agenda.

But there is also cause for optimism in the announcement. After all, Michael Eisner is stepping down a year ahead of schedule, in spite of his tooth-and-nail struggle to hang on to his position in recent years, with an eye toward serving out his contract until its expiration date in the fall of 2006. This suggests that perhaps an innovative change of approach for Disney is not so far-fetched after all.

The bottom line is that Bob Iger is likely to prove to be a good match for the company's needs. He not only brings considerable in-house experience to the chore; he also has a natal horoscope that resonates well with the Disney incorporation chart (07/28/1995; 15:45 EDT; Dover, DE). Iger was born on February 10, 1951 in New York City (time unknown), with his natal Saturn conjunct the Disney Mars, so perhaps he will be able to direct and manage the company's enormous potential effectively. That Mars is at the midpoint of the Sun and Jupiter in the Disney incorporation chart, so it is a key factor in the growth and identity of the company. Iger's natal Cupido conjoins the Disney Chiron, which creates a problematical opposition to Saturn in the incorporation horoscope. This may be an indication that Iger could redirect some of the strife the company has been experiencing into channels that reach higher levels of public acceptance and creative accomplishment. This notion is underscored by the conjunction of Iger's natal Pluto with the Disney incorporation Moon. That combination plainly states that Iger can be powerful enough to transform the public's opinions about the embattled corporation.

SUN/SATURN CORRECT LOWS
The Sun was trine Saturn less than three hours after the closing bell on Thursday, March 10, and several stocks set correct lows on that trading day: Gibraltar Steel Corporation (ROCK), Grant Prideco Inc. (GRP), MTR Gaming Group Inc. (MNTG), First American Corporation (FAF), Etablissements Delhaize Freres (DEG), and Kansas City Southern (KSU).

Correct lows occur when the low price for a stock comes on the same day as a particular planetary aspect, and at a price level that corresponds to the point in the zodiac at which the planetary aspect occurs. The Fibonacci Trader/Galactic Trader software from PAS (www.galacticinvestor.com) makes it particularly easy to compute and display correct lows. For example, here's how to view the Sun/Saturn trine on Galactic Trader price charts: set the planetary lines for the Sun and for Saturn at (G,120,N,0) to see the correct lows for ROCK, GRP, MNTG, FAF, and DEG. Create the Sun and Saturn lines at (G,120,N,-2) for KSU.

While correct lows don't guarantee a winning trade, they typically add some extra energy that adds to the price potential on the long side. If any of these stocks trade below Thursday's low in the coming week, the correct low obviously isn't holding. But those that continue to find support on that low, especially the ones that bring in higher highs and higher lows, have strong trading potential.

THE WEEK AHEAD

The earnings reports will continue to flow in this week at a steady pace, including word from Comverse Technology (CMVT), OfficeMax (OMX), Protein Design Laboratories (PDL), Electronics Boutique (ELBO), United Rentals (URI), Cleco Corporation (CNL), Ivax Corporation (IVX), Albertson's Inc. (ABS), Pepco Holdings (POM), King Pharmaceuticals (KG), Plains Exploration (PXP), Bear Stearns Companies (BSC), Herman Miller Inc. (MLHR), Hot Topic Inc. (HOTT), Morgan Stanley (MWD), Fedex Corporation (FDX), Goldman Sachs Group (GS), Westar Energy (WR), Nike Inc. (NKE), Worthington Industries (WOR), Dollar General (DG), Cintas Corporation (CTAS), Toys R Us Inc. (TOY), Jabil Circuit Inc. (JBL), Barnes and Noble (BKS), 3Com Corporation (COMS), Cost Plus Inc. (CPWM), American Healthways (AMHC), Scholastic Corporation (SCHL), and Winnebago Industries (WGO).

We are also looking at a busy week for economic reports, including Fourth Quarter Current Accounts, January Business Inventories, February Retail Sales, February Industrial Production, February Capacity Utilization, February Housing Starts, February Import Prices, February Leading Indicators, the Philadelphia Fed Survey for March, and the preliminary March report on Consumer Sentiment from the University of Michigan. The week also features two major presentations by Alan Greenspan, a speech by Treasury Secretary John W. Snow, and a keynote address by SEC Chairman William H. Donaldson, so there will be plenty of news for the economic pundits to chew on.

The coming week will bring incredible astrological intensity, which will almost certainly make its influence felt in the markets. Throughout the week we will be keeping an eye on the fifth-harmonic heliocentric action for Mercury, Venus, Apollon, Uranus, Jupiter, Admetos, Poseidon, Mars, Pluto, Cupido, and the Earth (H,72,N,0), but there's much more to challenge us on a day-to-day basis. Monday brings the second in the current three-part series of Jupiter/Neptune trines, along with a Sun/Pluto square, a Venus/Saturn trine, and heliocentric Mercury changing signs. Look for more concern about oil prices, gold speculation, and turbulent market conditions. Tuesday features a Kronos direct station, so we can expect major power plays or news about executive issues in the corporate or governmental arenas. Wednesday is a relatively calm day astrologically, but a Venus/Hades square in the final hour of the trading day could bring some tough market decisions. There's a certain amount of tension to contend with in Thursday's market environment, but a void-of-course Moon that afternoon will give us a good reason to bring our trading activity to an early conclusion. Friday ends the trading week with a Venus/Pluto square and a heliocentric Mars/Pluto conjunction prior to the opening bell, so we should see massive trading volume and a decisive trend emerging. Of course all of this pales in comparison to the action during the coming weekend! We'll have the monthly lunar apogee, a Mercury retrograde station, Mars changing signs, an eclipse activation, and the Spring Equinox--all before trading resumes next week. There's definitely a roller coaster ride ahead, so hold on to your hats!

Have a great week!

SPIRITUAL FOCUS FOR THE WEEK

The greatest traders have all understood that emotional balance is the key to successful trading. Through Practical Spiritual Astrology we have an opportunity to restore inner harmony, enhance emotional balance, and make wiser choices in the markets.

This week brings us significant opportunities for creativity, imaginative impulses, and true spiritual growth, but in order to give those qualities the fullest possible expression we will need to slow down, reconsider our past challenges, and begin to invent new paradigms in which we can claim greater personal power and commitment.

"I have learned this at least by my experiment: that if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours." --Henry David Thoreau

STOCKS TO WATCH: FD, FOX, GIL, ORLY.

Federated Department Stores (FD)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 02/05/1992; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: With transiting Jupiter moving across the FD First-Trade Descendant and hitting First-Trade Apollon, FD looks like a good trade. Transiting Neptune currently conjoining the FD First-Trade Sun adds to the speculative potential, especially with the current Jupiter/Neptune trine in play. Our plan is thus to add a long position in FD to the Model Portfolio this week. We will set our initial stop at 59.40.

Fox Entertainment Group (FOX)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 11/11/1998; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: We did not enter a position in this stock last week because the resistance set by the FOX correct high on the Venus/Uranus conjunction line held steady. Now that FOX has experienced a bit of a price pullback, however, we are ready to enter a long position at a more advantageous price. We will do so early in the trading week, setting our initial stop at 32.75.

Gildan Activewear Inc. (GIL)
NYSE
First Trade Date: 09/01/1999; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: Transiting Jupiter is crossing the GIL First-Trade Ascendant as transiting Saturn is stationary conjunct the First-Trade Vulcanus. This could bring some extra power to the trading dynamic, so we plan to add a long position early this week, with our initial stop set at 40.50.

O'Reilly Automotive Inc. (ORLY)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 04/23/1993; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: ORLY continued to push to new heights last week, and it has been tracking above its 10-day moving average for several weeks now. It's a hot stock, so we're especially intrigued by transiting Uranus crossing over the ORLY First-Trade Midheaven. We also have transiting Jupiter conjoining First-Trade Apollon as ORLY experiences a Mercury return this week, so there's a lot to recommend a long position. We plan to add one by mid-week, with an initial stop set at 49.50.
