FinancialCyclesWeekly.com #0510 -- March 6-12, 02005 with Tim Bost
COMMENT: In our February 27 issue we noted that "economic reports are more likely to impact stock prices than earnings reports this week ." That certainly proved to be the case. For the first time in a long time, the Labor Department's report on job creation was halfway encouraging, and the stock market took off, rallying to a level it hadn't seen in well over three years.
Creating more jobs is a good thing, of course, but it has proven surprisingly difficult for the current administration, especially during the months of the presidential campaign. And even now, with new jobs starting to show up in the economy, the unemployment rate continues to rise. So why the celebration on Wall Street? We think it's because of the current Venus/Uranus conjunction. That's a planetary combination that typically promotes good feelings and booming markets, and last week was no exception. Stocks rallied, with or without good reason.
Regardless of the cause, the bottom line is that we are looking for the current rally in stocks to take equities prices to even greater heights for the short term, even though we are fully aware that the rally is not sustainable indefinitely. From a technical standpoint, we note that while the upswing in stock prices has been encouraging, the relatively thin volume behind the move has left us unconvinced that there's much to brag about. As stocks continue to be overvalued, there will be fewer and fewer opportunities to buy high and sell higher. On top of that, surging petroleum prices won't take long to trickle through the economic pipeline and impact businesses and individuals with more pain at the pump, evaporating profit margins, and a deepening debt crisis. That's why we believe that the joyride on Wall Street is about to come to an end. In fact, by the time we move into April, we expect to see a significant market correction getting underway.
ART BOOSTS THE ECONOMY
A few weeks ago we shared our observations on the Central Park display of "The Gates," the temporary art installation by Christo and Jeanne-Claude that draped more than 23 miles of the park's pathways with over 7,500 saffron banners mounted on steel archways. It was a remarkable sight to see and it underscored the resonant sense of community that is at the heart of the New York experience.
But "The Gates," a $21-million project which was funded by its creators, was also a remarkable financial success. As a part of the arrangements which allowed for erection of the free art display, Christo and Jeanne-Claude donated $3 million to the Central Park Conservancy. And the overall economic impact of the exhibit was even more far-reaching than that.
Hotels in midtown Manhattan had an 87% occupancy rate during the exhibit, which drew an unprecedented 1.5 million out-of-town visitors, including 300,000 from overseas. February is normally a sluggish month for tourism in the Big Apple, but area restaurants brought in double their normal revenues on weekdays and triple the usual amount on weekends. Broadway theater ticket sales were up 17 percent, and the city's art museums also brought in increased revenues. Some pushcart vendors even saw their sales jump by 1,000% during the two-week exhibit.
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg commented that "The Gates may have been saffron, but to a lot of New Yorkers, they really meant green." He predicted that the 16-day free exhibit would ultimately bring in $8 million in tax revenue to the city "at virtually no cost" to the public coffers. Overall, the artistic initiative increased New York's economic activity by an estimated $254 million.

THE WEEK AHEAD
There's a hefty week ahead for earnings reports, with news expected from Remington Oil and Gas Company (REM), Aquila Inc. (ILA), ABM Industries (ABM), the Kroger Company (KR), Tenet Healthcare (THC), Jo-Ann Stores Inc. (JAS), Centerpoint Energy (CNP), CMS Energy Corporation (CMS), Korn-Ferry International (KFY), Checkpoint Systems (CKP), Men's Wearhouse (MW), Brown Shoe Company Inc. (BWS), Urban Outfitters (URBAN), National Semiconductor (NSM), Quicksilver Resources Inc. (KWK), Anntaylor Stores (ANN), and Electronics Boutique (ELBO), along with many more.
The week's action in economic reports will be fairly thin, however, suggesting that the markets will be far more interested in last week's job report and in the climbing price of oil. Late in the week, however, we expect to get the word on January Wholesale Inventories and on January International Trade. Either of these reports could get a reaction from Wall Street.
A lot of the week's astrological energy gets focused on Monday, with a Mars/Saturn opposition, a Venus/Cupido square, a lunar perigee, and an eclipse point trigger. Much of this action comes late in the day, so it may continue to impact the trading atmosphere on Tuesday. Tuesday brings its own challenges, however, with a void-of-course Moon chewing up most of the trading day. On Wednesday the Venus/Uranus conjunction that moved the markets so powerfully last week will come into play heliocentrically, so we could some surprisingly positive market action. Thursday's New Moon and Mars Vulcanus opposition are followed by a lunar void-of-course period that will keep us out of the markets throughout the afternoon. Friday's Mercury/Zeus opposition may bring an energetic close to the week's trading as we move into a weekend featuring an eclipse activation from Mercury and a Cupido retrograde station.
Throughout the trading week we will be keeping an eye on fourth-harmonic planetary lines (G,90,N,0), with a particular focus on Mercury, Venus, Mars, Saturn, Cupido, Zeus, and Vulcanus.
Have a great week!

SPIRITUAL FOCUS FOR THE WEEK
The greatest traders have all understood that emotional balance is the key to successful trading. Through Practical Spiritual Astrology we have an opportunity to restore inner harmony, enhance emotional balance, and make wiser choices in the markets.
The harder we push ahead in our lives and the more resistance we encounter, the more clearly we can define the places and situations that hold the highest potential for our spiritual growth. Because that growth is just beginning, we cannot hope to comprehend fully the magnificent outcome that lies ahead.
"We shall not cease from exploration. And the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time. " --T. S. Eliot

STOCKS TO WATCH: FOX, KWK, RESC, TOL, TTC.
Fox Entertainment Group (FOX)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 11/11/1998; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: FOX smashed through its 10-day moving average during last week's trading and decisively broke out of a trading range that had confined it all year so far. With Pluto conjoining the First-Trade Ascendant and Jupiter conjoining the First-Trade Midheaven, the prospects for this stock continue to look very solid. However, on Friday FOX made a correct high at the Venus/Uranus conjunction line (G,360,N,-2), which could indicate a short-term reversal to the downside. If FOX penetrates this line to trade above 35.80 on Monday, we will enter an immediate long position, setting our initial stop at 32.75.
Quicksilver Resources (KWK)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 10/22/2001; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: The current transit of Uranus to the KWK First-Trade IC has been enough to give this stock a major boost. It's a volatile situation, so we are ready to enter an immediate long position in this stock. Our initial stop will be set at 46.50.
Roanoke Electric Steel (RESC)
NASDAQ
First Trade Date: 11/03/1980; 10:000 a.m.
Trading Strategy: Zeus has moved into an exact conjunction with the RESC First-Trade Apollon, while transiting Pluto conjoins the First-Trade Ascendant and transiting Jupiter occupies the First-Trade Midheaven. It's a great set-up for a long position, and that's exactly what we plan to add to the Model Portfolio early this week. We will set our initial stop at 25.00.
Toll Brothers Inc. (TOL)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 07/16/1986; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: Transiting Uranus conjoining the TOL First-Trade Descendant and transiting Saturn conjoining the First-Trade Sun offers us a powerful planetary combination. While it's not necessary a positive one, it does promise a good bit of volatility, so we believe that TOL will continue to be a very tradable stock, at least for the short term. If we get Monday morning trading in this stock above 89.80 we plan to add a long position in TOL to the Model Portfolio early this week, with an initial stop set at 86.50.
Toro Company (TTC)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 09/06/1978; 10:00 a.m.
Trading Strategy: TTC currently has transiting Jupiter conjoining First-Trade Pluto, with the added kicker of transiting Apollon conjoining the First-Trade Ascendant. That's a positive dynamic, and we're also encouraged by the fact that TTC has found some significant support on a first-harmonic Uranus line (G,360,N,-2), but has just broken through an increment of that line on its way upward. We are thus ready to enter an immediate long position in this stock, with an initial stop set at 86.20.
