FinancialCyclesWeekly.com #0509 -- February 27-March 5, 02005 with Tim Bost
COMMENT: Maybe we're just cynical. Or perhaps we're just learning that we're not nearly cynical enough. Either way, it struck us as just a little bit strange that outgoing U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge has been appointed to the Board of Directors of The Home Depot (HD-NYSE). Is this somehow connected with his famous recommendation that Americans hurry out to stockpile duct tape in order to combat terrorism? Following the money might yield some interesting information here.
But of course the Department of Homeland Security isn't the only place where financial leverage may compromise the public interest. A Food and Drug Administration panel determined recently that the pain pills Celebrex, Bextra and Vioxx all pose serious risks to cardiovascular health, and at the same time approved all of the drugs for public consumption. Now it turns out that 10 of the 32 members of the panel had financial ties to the manufacturers of the drugs, suggesting that they were in a position to vote for the health of their personal bank accounts, rather than supporting public health and safety.
In other cases, the problem may be less one of corruption than one of outright criminal activity. Bank of America has just revealed that it has lost key computer records containing financial and personal information about more than 1.2 million government employees. While the ultimate responsibility for the missing data hasn't yet been determined, there is speculation that airport baggage handlers were responsible for the disappearance of the computer tapes holding the records. Coming as it does on the heels of the revelation by Choicepoint that thieves had appropriated the personal and financial information of about 145,000 people in its database, this news from Bank of America does little to inspire confidence in the ability or willingness or corporations to protect the public interest.
SMOKE AND MIRRORS
The bottom line, whether it's cynical or not, is that things aren't always what they seem, in government, in business, and in the markets. In the U.S. equities markets, for example, last week saw a sharp swing to the downside, followed by an enthusiastic push back to the upside. While the spin from the brokerage houses is that this is an indicator of resilience in the stock market and a promise of outstanding profits to be made, that's not necessarily the case. From our perspective, last week's volatility was a predictable by-product of the Uranus-amplified Full Moon, which we noted could bring "extremes in the markets throughout the week." Right now, we may see stock prices move higher during the upcoming Venus/Uranus conjunction which makes its positive influence felt throughout this trading week, but even so, stocks look like they're forming a double top. That's a bearish technical indicator, so we may find that a brief rally is followed by an extremely precipitous price decline.

THE WEEK AHEAD
This week we expect to get earnings reports from Celanese (CE), H. J. Heinz and Company), Omnivision Technologies (OVTI), Primedia (PRM), Renal Care Group (RCI), Tiffany and Company (TIF), and Univision Communications (UVN), among others.
Earnings are always important, but economic reports are more likely to impact stock prices than earnings reports this week. On Monday, the National Association of Purchasing Management in Chicago will share its reading of the Midwestern region's economy for February. On Friday we are due to get the all-important Labor Department's report on February U.S. non-farm payrolls.
The week's astrological picture begins with a heliocentric resonance between Venus and Uranus, foreshadowing the geocentric Venus/Uranus conjunction at the end of the week. This sets the tone that should prevail in much of the week's trading action: lots of surprises, with many of them being positive. By Tuesday, however, we can look for news with far-reaching implications, signaled by a geocentric Mercury/Pluto square and a heliocentric Mercury/Poseidon opposition.
A void-of-course Moon on Wednesday will keep us out of the market during the morning hours of trading, and we will remain somewhat cautious that afternoon thanks to a heliocentric Mercury/Neptune square. Thursday's Mars/Jupiter square and Venus/Pluto quintile promise a particularly energetic day in trading, and Mars crosses the 24 Line on the Universal Clock that evening to help set the stage for the powerful Venus/Uranus conjunction prior to the opening of New York markets on Friday. Friday also brings a potent eclipse activation from Saturn, so we could have a sense of things coming back down to earth as the trading week draws to a close. But there's plenty of potent astrological action coming up over the weekend, including a Martian eclipse activation and a Hades direct station, so we may also get an inkling of the following week's potential for turbulence as well.
Throughout the trading week we will be paying particular attention to heliocentric Mercury, Venus, Uranus, Neptune, Chiron, Admetos, and Poseidon in the fourth harmonic (H,90,N,0) and to geocentric fifth-harmonic configurations for the Sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Pluto, Zeus, Admetos, and Poseidon (G,72,N,0) as well.
Have a great week!

SPIRITUAL FOCUS FOR THE WEEK
The greatest traders have all understood that emotional balance is the key to successful trading. Through Practical Spiritual Astrology we have an opportunity to restore inner harmony, enhance emotional balance, and make wiser choices in the markets.
It may be challenging for us to imagine the kind of transformation that is needed in our lives right now, but if we put ourselves into motion and take bigger, bolder actions, we are likely to be surprised at the abundant beauty, wealth and love that we experience.

STOCKS TO WATCH: CVX, CLF, NFX, PTR.
Chevron-Texaco Corporation (CVX)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 10/10/2001; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: CVX is a very big player in the oil industry; its current astrological pattern features transiting Pluto conjoining First-Trade Chiron. This suggests a potential for massive transformation of the business and its profitability, perhaps in a way that emphasizes connections with other companies and that presents substantial challenges along the way. At the same time, transiting Jupiter is conjoining the First-Trade Sun, while the transneptunian planet Apollon is conjoining First-Trade Mercury. These are indicators of new heights for the stock, so we plan to add CVX to the Model Portfolio early this week. We will be setting our initial stop at 57.75, in keeping with a first-harmonic heliocentric Poseidon line (H,360,N,0).
Cleveland Cliffs Inc. (CLF)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 07/27/1960; 10:00 a.m.
Trading Strategy: The price action for CLF has shown some remarkable resonance lately in responding to fourth-harmonic heliocentric Chiron and Uranus (H,90,N,0). With transiting Saturn currently conjoining First-Trade Mercury, we wouldn't be surprised to see the trading in this stock getting a little toppy, but with transiting Pluto conjoining First-Trade Jupiter, there's solid evidence to suggest that the upward move isn't over for this stock. We plan to enter a long position in CLF early this week, setting our initial stop at 65.00.
Newfield Exploration Company (NFX)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 11/12/1993; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: The situation with NFX is fairly straightforward, with transiting Jupiter conjoining the NFX First-Trade Midheaven and transiting Pluto conjoining the First-Trade Ascendant. That's a powerful positive combination that could signal a top for this stock, but Pluto will remain in play for the next few months and Jupiter will be making its influence felt through mid-March. Based on that potential, we will be entering a long position early this week, with our initial stop set at 69.00.
Petrochina Company Ltd. ADS (PTR)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 04/06/2000; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: Transiting Jupiter made its retrograde station recently just shy of a conjunction with the PTR First-Trade Apollon, and is currently moving toward an opposition to the PTR First-Trade Sun. That's an action that has us interested in a short-term position in this stock; we will add a long position to the Model Portfolio early this week, setting our initial stop at 56.25.
