FinancialCyclesWeekly.com #0507 -- February 13-19, 02005 with Tim Bost
COMMENT: We're beginning to move into some possibly treacherous territory for the current market rally, thanks mainly to the actions of Saturn, Uranus, and Pluto, which have the potential to override much of the positive energy we've been getting since the Mars/Pluto conjunction and the Jupiter retrograde station a couple of weeks ago. The eighth-harmonic tension between Saturn and Uranus could impact market action as early as Tuesday or as late as Friday, but we will likely be obliged to deal with it before this trading week is out. Saturn is also quincunx Pluto, which adds an extra element of stress. We are still positioning some of our trades on the long side of the market, but we plan to use tight stops to protect our gains and to guard against excessive losses.
TRADERS GATHER IN NEW YORK
For the past couple of days we've been in New York City, talking with traders and speculators who have gathered for the International Traders Expo here. There is an incredible variety of interest and opinion being expressed at this gathering, with active traders voicing enthusiasm for markets of all sorts, seasoned speculators looking for enhanced tools and methodologies to apply to market analysis, and market newcomers eagerly collecting information from the many vendors gathered for the event. While we've fielded many questions about our opinions on specific equities, the interest in index funds and e-mini contracts seems to be quite strong, and we've participated in several discussions about Fibonacci-based techniques for market forecasting. But we also see the size of the gathering and the enthusiasm of the participants as contrary indicators: if active trading is becoming this popular, can a significant market decline be far behind?
COMING OUT OF THE CLOSET
One of the speakers we heard at the Expo was our friend Larry Pesavento, who is the author of several excellent books on trading methodologies and pattern recognition and who has shared the speakers' platform with us at astro-economics conferences in the past. Larry was discussing Fibonacci ratios and detailing his research on the opening price principle in a break-out workshop with about 150 participants. He created a bit of a stir when he told the group that it should take a serious look at astrology as a component in trading and market analysis. "I'm probably the only speaker at this conference right now who will dare talk to you about astrology this year," he said, "but I can guarantee you that within a couple of years conferences like this one will have four or five key speakers talking about astrology in the markets." We're sure that Larry is right. We're not only seeing greater acceptance of astrology as a valuable tool to use in the markets, but we're also meeting more and more traders who are eager to take a serious look at how they can use cosmic correlations to enhance their bottom line.
WRAPSODY IN ORANGE
We have felt especially fortunate to be in Manhattan at the commencement of the artist Christo's huge installation in Central Park, which was unveiled on Saturday, February 12, and will be on display for 16 days. The exhibit, which cost over $21 million and was 26 years in the making, displays 7,500 bright orange panels of recyclable fabric in a series of hanging gateways, stretching over 23 miles of the pathways that run through the park. It's visually stunning, and walking along the pathways gave us a refreshing break from the intensity in the Traders Expo meeting rooms 15 blocks away. Most of all, though, we relished participating in the wonderfully diverse community that is such an integral part of the New York experience. That amazing blend of cosmopolitan and home-town energies got a truly uplifting focus as the crowds exuberantly strolled beneath the orange panels in the park.
MORE ON SOCIAL SECURITY
We commented briefly in last week's issue about the astrological correlations to the current discussion on revamping Social Security. Market astrologer Ray Merriman also had some comments to add to the discussion last week, focusing mainly on the Saturn/Pluto dynamic involved. Ray notes that President Bush "insists the system is going bankrupt, and the only way to save it is through privatization. And for the right to invest 4% of your social security contributions (if you are under 55), you will have to give up --what? -- 40% of your benefits over time? And to affect this plan, the U.S. will have to pony up $2 trillion more to our current $4.6 trillion deficit. This is certainly in line with the historical themes of downside of the Saturn-Pluto cycle (opposition to conjunction, 2001-2020). And those themes are: increased federal deficits and personal debts, higher taxes, higher interest rates, and sluggish economy and equity markets.
"Will this plan for privatization of just 4% really save the Social Security program? Let's assume you have $10,000.00 in the program. And let's assume the economy grows by 3% over time (a very generous assumption). And let's say you get to invest 4% of that $10,000.00, and you are able to show a profit of triple that 3% economic growth. You make 9%. How does that affect your bottom line? At 3%, $10,000 would appreciate to $10,300 in one year. If 45 of that $10,000 made 9%, your total equity at the end of one year would be $10,324.00. Geez, for every $10,000.00 I have, I could increase my bottom line by $24.00 -- if I was able to triple my rate of return above the economic growth of 3%! And for this, I should be willing to forfeit 40% of my future benefits? For this change in the system, I should be willing for the government to add $2 trillion to its deficit?"
Ray Merriman concludes that under President Bush's proposal, "financial services companies could earn $40 billion to $280 billion in fees for handling these new accounts. Geez," he adds, "we might increase our bottom line by $24.00 for every $10,000 we have in the system if we can triple the rate of economic growth through our investments in privatization, while that industry gets a windfall of $40-280 billion in fees. It doesn't add up. But it does make sense in light of our understanding of previous Saturn-Pluto downside cycles."
HOLIDAY SCHEDULE CHANGE
Because of the US markets being closed for the Presidents Day holiday on Monday, February 21, next week's issue of FinancialCyclesWeekly will be published one day later than usual. Look for us in your e-mail inbox on Tuesday morning, February 22!

THE WEEK AHEAD
This is another busy week for earnings reports, with a number of key retailers among the companies sharing their results. We expect to get word from Agilent Technologies (A), Qwest Communications (Q), Medco Health Solutions (MHS), Deere and Company (DE), Applied Materials (AMAT), Firstenergy Corporation (FE), Transocean Inc. (RIG), Reynolds American (RAI), Network Appliance (NTAP), Nordstrom Inc. (JWN), IMS Health Inc. (RX), Sungard Data Systems (SDS), Caremark Rx Inc. (CMX), Cooper Tire and Rubber (CMX), Coca-Cola Company (KO), Wendy's International (WEN), Moody's Corporation (MCO), Hewlett-Packard (HPQ), Jones Apparel Group (JNY), Medtronic Inc. (MDT), Baker Hughes Inc. (BHI), Coca-Cola Enterprises (CCE), Genzyme (GENZ), Target Corporation (TGT), Nextel Communications (NXTL), Wal-Mart Stores (WMT), Allegheny Energy (Y), Radioshack Corporation (RSH), Intuit Inc. (INTU), PG+E Corporation (PCG), and Campbell Soup Company (CPB).
The week's economic news is scheduled to feature the numbers for December Business Inventories, January Retail Sales, Housing Starts, Capacity Utilization, Industrial Production, Import Prices, and Leading Indicators. Toward the end of the week, we will also be watching for the January Producer Price Index, the February survey from the Philadelphia Fed, and the preliminary calculations on February Consumer Sentiment from the University of Michigan.
Astrologically the week ahead presents lots of challenges for active traders. Monday has a fairly positive tone to it, thanks to a Venus/Neptune conjunction just after Venus moves into Aquarius and a Venus/Jupiter trine in right ascension. That combination makes for some beautiful Valentine's Day energy, but an eclipse activation and the superior Sun/Mercury conjunction in the early morning hours could add some extra punch to the market action. Tuesday offers the week's first real possibility for a sharp market reversal, with Saturn sesquiquadrate Uranus in right ascension. That same aspect occurs geocentrically late in the trading day on Thursday, so we are considering the entire Tuesday-through-Thursday period as a time to stay particularly alert to shifting indicators. Tuesday also brings a Venus/Kronos sesquiquadrate, heliocentric Mercury changing signs, and an eclipse activation by Venus, but most of the day's significant dynamics come in the fifth harmonic. For that trading day we'll be looking at (G,72,N,0) planetary lines for Mercury, Mars, Saturn, Apollon, Vulcanus, and the Sun, altering the factor if necessary.
The eighth harmonic in planetary dynamics begins to take over on Wednesday with the Mars/Admetos sesquiquadrate an hour before the opening bell, on a day that also features an eclipse activation and Mercury changing signs geocentrically during trading hours. We'll keep an eye on these events as possible intraday timing triggers. A heliocentric Mars/Uranus square Wednesday night gets pumped up by heliocentric Mercury as Thursday gets underway, augmented by some Sun/Vulcanus action in the fifth harmonic and Mercury activating an eclipse point. The geocentric Saturn/Uranus sesquiquadrate comes an hour before Thursday's closing bell in New York, but we'll be quite surprised if we haven't already seen some significant shifts in the tone of the market prior to that time.
On Friday morning, in spite of the likelihood of prevailing chaos, we'll be stepping aside from trading activity, thanks to a void-of-course Moon. We get a Mercury/Jupiter sesquiquadrate at the opening bell, so we'll be checking the (G,45,N,0) planetary lines for these two planets that day to watch for correct highs and lows, and may look at the same settings for Saturn, Uranus, Venus, Mars, Apollon, Admetos, Zeus, and the True Lunar Node as well. Friday also brings the Sun changing signs, a heliocentric Venus/Poseidon square, and yet another eclipse activation. The holiday weekend will be a particularly good time to be completely out of any volatile or questionable positions, thanks to the lunar apogee, Mars square Zeus, Venus square Admetos, the True Lunar Node in opposition to Apollon, and Mercury conjunct Uranus, along with two more eclipse activations.
Whew! Have a great week!

SPIRITUAL FOCUS FOR THE WEEK
The greatest traders have all understood that emotional balance is the key to successful trading. Through Practical Spiritual Astrology we have an opportunity to restore inner harmony, enhance emotional balance, and make wiser choices in the markets.
Power struggles in communications and emotional outbursts may color the start of our week, especially if we fail to imagine new possibilities for love and creativity in our lives. If we let ourselves be guided by our intuition, however, we can find amazingly expansive ways to harmonize with those around us

STOCKS TO WATCH: CHA, CRS, KOF, NXY.
China Telecom Corporation Ltd. (CHA)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 11/14/2002; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: Jupiter is currently conjoining the CHA First-Trade Midheaven, with transiting Pluto closing in on the First-Trade Ascendant. Both of these aspects add some positive punch to the stock, backed up with transiting Neptune's opposition to First-Trade Jupiter and transiting Mars conjoining First-Trade Chiron. These factors may add some extra speculative energy to the mix, but the kicker is the current transit of Mercury to conjoin the CHA First-Trade Uranus this week. That's certainly appropriate for a telecom stock, and we feel that CHA may also be appropriate for our Model Portfolio. Unless we get a daily close below 38.40 on Monday or Tuesday, we will be adding a long position in CHA around the middle of the week, setting our initial stop at 38.50.
Carpenter Technology Corporation (CRS)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 11/06/1968; 10:00 a.m.
Trading Strategy: Transiting Pluto is making its slow way across the CRS First-Trade Ascendant, with Jupiter currently coming off its station on the First-Trade Midheaven. This combination makes this stock worth looking at, but a further move to the upside could be cut short in the next month or two thanks to transiting Pluto square First-Trade Pluto and transiting Saturn simultaneously square First-Trade Saturn. It should be an interesting situation, to say the least. Our strategy will be to add a long position to the Model Portfolio late this week, setting our initial stop at 60.25 and then trailing it fairly tightly once the trade is underway.
Coca-Cola FEMSA, S.A. de C.V. (KOF)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 09/14/1993; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: KOF has a lot of action going on, with transiting Jupiter conjoining First-Trade Jupiter and the transiting True Lunar Node hitting the First-Trade Descendant. In the background, there's some positive and powerful energy at work long-term with transiting Poseidon semisquare the KOF First-Trade Sun throughout the year and transiting Pluto in opposition to First-Trade Kronos this spring. This stock is ready for some fairly dramatic short-term action right now, however, with this week's Saturn/Uranus sesquiquadrate activating First-Trade Mars and the First-Trade True Lunar Node and with Mercury and the Sun conjoining First-Trade Saturn. Our plan is thus to add a long position in KOF by the middle of the week, setting our initial stop at
Nexen Inc. (NXY)
NYSE
First Trade Date: 11/14/2000; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: Here's one more First-Trade horoscope with transiting Pluto conjoining the Ascendant and transiting Jupiter conjoining the Midheaven. NXY has responded to this energy quite positively with a dramatic price break-out in the last couple of trading sessions. In addition, transiting Vulcanus will be semisquare the NXY First-Trade Jupiter from now through the summer months, so there's a lot of extra potential here. A conservative trading plan is nevertheless advisable, however, since transiting Saturn is currently conjoining First-Trade Vulcanus and square First-Trade Apollon. Our plan is thus to add a long position in NXY early this week, setting our initial stop at 41.05 and then trailing it tightly if we get some positive price action in the trade.
