Financial Cycles
February 6, 2005
FinancialCyclesWeekly.com #0506 -- February 6-12, 02005 with Tim Bost
COMMENT: Last week we noted that "We are looking for a significant shift in market direction," which "should open the door for a rally in stock prices in the weeks ahead," thanks to the Mars/Pluto conjunction and the Jupiter retrograde station. That certainly proved to be the case, with the week resulting in stronger positions in our Model Portfolio and a generally positive tone in most of the trading action. While this is not necessarily a signal of an extended price run-up of record-breaking proportions, it does provide an opportunity for more profitable trades.
DÉJÀ VU ALL OVER AGAIN
What a difference a day makes, not to mention a Saturn cycle! In late 2003, when we were preparing our monograph on Strategies for Creating Personal Wealth in 2004, we focused on the fact that Saturn was returning to the position it held during the administration of Gerald Ford, which was noteworthy not only because Donald Rumsfeld was President Ford's Chief of Staff, but also because of the passage of ERISA, the Employees Retirement Investment Securities Act. This law, which created the 401-K plan, helped move the responsibility for retirement funding from employers to employees, and set the course which eventually resulted in debacles like the Enron scandal. Along the way, of course, ERISA was also a big boon for the securities industry, and did a lot to help bring the bear market of the 1970s to an end.
Our main concern in reviewing this history, however, was the understanding that the cycle was getting ready to repeat itself, which suggested that there were potentially challenging times ahead for retirement plans, especially through attempts to change basic legislation. That cyclic impact is certainly evident right now, with President Bush's front-and-center efforts to privatize Social Security. As columnist Maureen Dowd commented this week, "The White House seems to think Social Security was corrupt form the moment it was enacted in 1935. It wants to replace it with private accounts that will fatten the wallets of stockbrokers and put the savings of Americans who didn't inherit vast fortunes at risk."
We plan to share more astrological analysis and more comments on Social Security in the weeks ahead. In the meantime, however, you might want to review some of the information in our monograph, which originally sold for $49.95 when it was published a year ago but is now available as a free download in a pdf-file format on our website at http://www.timbost.com/publications/books.html.
MARKET ASTROLOGY ON THE AIR
Our friend Arch Crawford, who has published his Crawford Perspectives newsletter since 1977, is becoming something of a regular on CNBC, sharing his views on the markets based on his astrological insights and his considerable skill as a market technician. He always does a fine job of bringing clarity and credibility to our field. Arch is next scheduled to be interviewed by Ron Insana on CNBC this Wednesday, February 9, at 2:20 p.m. EST. You can find him on the web at www.crawfordperspectives.com.
THE DUMBEST DAY OF THE YEAR?
In last week's newsletter we suggested that "Perhaps this Groundhog Day we will get to find out who casts a bigger shadow: George W. Bush or Alan Greenspan." That notion resonated quite strongly with some online comments we happened to see later in the week, made by musician Chris Q of the band LOWdOGS on the group's website at http://www.lowdogs.com/qsnews/. "Yesterday was Groundhog Day," he noted, "quite possibly the dumbest day/tradition of the year. Yesterday was also the State of the Union address. DEFINITELY the dumbest day of the year. Since there's probably a million people out there going on about the latter I'll stick with old Punxsutawney Phil.
"First things first, Phil claims that there are officially 6 more weeks of winter this year. When he emerged from his burrow yesterday, which incidentally isn't a burrow at all, he saw his shadow hence the prediction.
"What most people don't realize is that there are lots of weather predicting groundhogs. They have one down here in the South (Georgia) named what else, General Lee. There's also one in Canada. I can't remember his name right now but I do know it's an albino. I think it also plays hockey. There are some European versions but we needn't concern ourselves with them. Punxsutawney Phil has somehow stolen all the glory. Maybe because he's 119 years old. That's right, 119! I guess anything that lives that long deserves some kind of credit for something.
"I suppose my one question is; how difficult is it to say that there'll be 6 more weeks of crappy weather in the Northeast at the beginning of February? I could've told you that. That's why I live in the South. Maybe next year we could have Phil give the State of the Union and Dubya could wax meteorologic."

THE WEEK AHEAD
Earnings season is still in full swing, with reports due this week from Biogen Idec (BIIB), North Folk Bancorp (NFB), Wellpoint, Inc. (WLP), Principal Financial Group (PFG), Electronic Data Systems (EDS), Jefferson-Pilot (JP), Clorox (CLX), Humana Inc. (HUM), Allergan Inc. (AGN), Cendant Corporation (CDE), Hasbro (HAS), Masco Corporation (MAS), Cisco Systems (CSCO), American International Group (AIG), May Department Stores (MAY), Sigma-Aldrich Group (SIAL), Computer Sciences (CSC), Dell Inc. (DELL), Prudential Financial (PRU), and Aetna (AET).
The economic news for the week is likely to center on a fresh batch of numbers from December, including Wholesale Inventories, Consumer Credit, and International Trade. There will also be speeches by Fed Governors Edward Gramlich Susan Bies, as well as Minneapolis Fed President Gary Stern and New York Fed President Timothy Geithner. Fed Chairman Alan Greenspan will go to Edinburgh, Scotland to accept an honorary degree. All of the comments by Fed officials could have unanticipated impacts on the markets, especially with transiting Mars activating the birth chart for the Federal Reserve this week.
Although we expect the overall trend to continue upward in the markets for the time being, there could be a negative bump in the road as this week gets underway, thanks to an eclipse activation, a Mars/Kronos opposition, and the lunar perigee on Monday. Tuesday's New Moon is paired with a second eclipse activation, but since it comes after the close of the New York markets it may make its impact felt on Wednesday as well, slowing down the positive action somewhat. Thursday brings a heliocentric opposition of Venus to Vulcanus, a precursor to the heliocentric Venus/Saturn opposition on Friday. The early hours on Friday also bring a void-of-course Moon, which suggests the wisdom of extra caution as the trading day gets underway, at least during the first hour after the opening bell. In short, while we are looking for opportunities on the long side this week, there are still enough potential rough spots in the astrological environment to make trading (and life in general) quite interesting.
As we set up our trades this week we will be paying particular attention to the heliocentric dynamics that come into play. We will keep an eye on the fourth-harmonic action for Mercury, Venus, Saturn, Neptune, Chiron, Apollon, Admetos, Vulcanus, and Poseidon (H,90,N,0) and the fifth-harmonic positions for Mercury, Venus, Mars, Neptune, Cupido, Kronos, and Poseidon (H,72,N,0).
Have a great week!

SPIRITUAL FOCUS FOR THE WEEK
The greatest traders have all understood that emotional balance is the key to successful trading. Through Practical Spiritual Astrology we have an opportunity to restore inner harmony, enhance emotional balance, and make wiser choices in the markets.
Although we may feel compelled to initiate action on the basis of what we perceive as differences between ourselves and others, we can grow in integrity and claim a fresh start if we reach within ourselves and discover new depths of emotional resiliency, communicating and connecting with others from a broader, more magnanimous perspective.

STOCKS TO WATCH: ATPG, CTX, HIBB, RCI.
ATP Oil and Gas (ATPG)
NYSE
First Trade Date: 02/06/2001; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: This is a carry-over from last week's watch list, since the stock did not give us the buy signal we required to enter the trade. But ATPG closed last Friday at 20.96, its first daily close above the 20.65 target we were waiting for. That means we plan to add a long position to the Model Portfolio as soon as trading gets underway this week. We will set our initial stop at 18.50.
Centex Corporation (CTX)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 02/28/1971; 10:00 a.m.
Trading Strategy: Transiting Pluto has been hanging around the CTX First-Trade Jupiter for quite a while now, and the stock has shown some dramatic growth. Currently, however, we also have transiting Jupiter conjoining First-Trade Uranus, and transiting Venus conjoining the First-Trade True Lunar Node and First-Trade Venus. This is enough to get us interested in a long position in this stock, which we will be entering after the middle of the week. CTX has been responding nicely to trading ranges defined by heliocentric Neptune in the fourth harmonic (H,90,N,0), so we will be using that planetary line to set our initial stop at 58.75.
Hibbett Sporting Goods (HIBB)
NASDAQ
First Trade Date: 10/11/1996; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: Transiting Jupiter has just made its retrograde station conjoining the powerful Sun-Apollon conjunction in the HIBB First-Trade chart, setting the stage for a short-term trade. HIBB gapped upward on Friday to make a daily low exactly on the fifth-harmonic Apollon line (H,72,N,0), which we take as an extremely positive signal. Our plan is thus to enter a long position early this week; we will set our initial stop at 27.00.
Renal Care Group Inc. (RCI)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 11/13/2001; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: Although transiting Saturn is currently conjoining the RCI First-Trade Vulcanus, we are looking at other factors which improve the prospects for this stock. Transiting Pluto is conjoining the First-Trade Ascendant, which intensifies the situation considerably. There's added strength in the situation, however, because transiting Jupiter is currently stationary on the RCI First-Trade Midheaven, with transiting Venus moving in on First-Trade Neptune to enhance the speculative energy. Neptune in the fifth harmonic (H,72,N,0) has significantly bounded the trading for this stock in the past, RCI has just broken out above a new increment of that planetary line. If we get a correct low with Thursday's Mars/Neptune quintile in the 38.70 -- 38.75 range, we will add a long position to the Model Portfolio. Our initial stop will be set at 36.75.
