FinancialCyclesWeekly.com #0504 -- January 23-29, 02005 with Tim Bost
COMMENT: We're seeing lots of volatile action in the markets as we move into choppy astrological waters during the coming week, with important actions coming from Venus, Saturn, Vulcanus, Mars, Pluto, Hades, and Jupiter. The U.S. presidential inauguration, with its excesses and protests, is behind us, and much of the world's attention will be focused once again on Iraq, where the violence continues to mount as the U.S.-sponsored elections approach. It's a wild and potentially disturbing situation both in and out of the markets, and it's also one that is particularly ripe with major opportunities!
DISAPPOINTMENTS GALORE
As the week begins, 117 of the Standard and Poor's 500 companies have already reported earnings, and many of them have missed expectations on profits and revenues. In fact, according to Reuters Estimates, more have turned in disappointing earnings reports than at the same time last year. That's not to say that there won't be some good news on the way, but most investors haven't seemed too eager to wait around for it. It didn't take many disappointing reports last week to trigger a sell-off in stocks, and the negative price action continued until the end of the week. So far this year, the S+P 500 is down 3.63 percent, the Dow Industrial Average is down 3.62 percent, and the NASDAQ is down 6.49 percent.
AFTER-CHRISTMAS SHOPPING OPPORTUNITIES
The dip in stock prices is in one sense equivalent to the post-holiday clearance sales that retailers have used to start their year. If you're a savvy shopper, you can pick up some bargains now. But you also have to keep in mind the fact that many stock issues, like a lot of the items in the retail stores, were outrageously overpriced to start with, so take the current shopping opportunity with a grain of salt. Beneath it all, of course, there are still some serious economic issues to be dealt with--like the record federal deficit, the staggering cost of the war in Iraq, the ultimate impact of the huge increases in oil prices, and the massive ramifications of Mr. Bush's proposed looting of Social Security to privatize retirement savings. Do your stock market shopping carefully, and stay tuned for further developments.
GOLDEN ADVANCES
Last week we noted that we expected "good news for gold speculators" with heliocentric Mercury moving through Sagittarius, a planetary phenomenon that "often corresponds to a short-term run-up in the price of gold." Gold did in fact follow the expected pattern, with the February contract on the COMEX up $3.90 for the week.

THE WEEK AHEAD
Dozens of the biggest U.S. companies will be reporting earnings this week, and we won't try to list them all here. You'll no doubt be hearing news of American Express (), Johnson and Johnson (JNJ), DuPont (DD), Merck and Company (MRK), Merrill Lynch (MER), Starbucks Corporation (SBUX), United Parcel Service (UPS), Microsoft (MSFT), Caterpillar (CAT), and McDonald's (MCD), to name a few.
The economic data coming out this week will include the Conference Board's Consumer Confidence report for January, the December numbers for Durable Goods Orders and Existing Home Sales, and the fourth-quarter report on Gross Domestic Product.
Astrologically we have a lot that can turn the markets this week. We have a void-of-course Moon throughout the trading day on Monday, so in spite of our eagerness to get into the fray we will step aside from active trading that day and refine our analysis and trading plans instead. Monday also brings a Venus/Jupiter square, so we will be taking a look at the mid-day market action to get a feel for its impact. With this particular planetary aspect in play, we wouldn't be surprised to see a wave of optimism, but with the void Moon we're not inclined to trust that sentiment, at least not to the extent of actively putting our money at risk.
The action begins to intensify on Tuesday, with a Full Moon, a Saturn/Vulcanus conjunction, and oppositions from Mercury to both Saturn and Vulcanus. The aspects could trigger enough of a pull-back to provide a significant buying opportunity. The morning session should be a bit edgy on Wednesday, with heliocentric Venus changing signs and a Mercury/Apollon square encouraging bigger goals in and out of the markets. Thursday could mark a major turning point. We not only get a Venus/Saturn opposition, but a Mars/Hades opposition and a Venus/Vulcanus opposition as well. The real hot spot of the week comes on Friday, however, with the extremely dangerous Mars/Pluto conjunction and the added impact of a Mercury/Chiron conjunction, on hand to help us see the silver lining in the clouds. This energy gets augmented by a Venus/Apollon square and carries us into the weekend, with tension and apprehension around the elections in Iraq being the order of the day.
Our trading strategy for the week will include fourth-harmonic geocentric planetary lines for the Sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Pluto, Chiron, Hades, Kronos, Apollon, and Vulcanus (G,90,N,0). We'll add the Moon for some of our intraday work.
Have a great week!

SPIRITUAL FOCUS FOR THE WEEK
The greatest traders have all understood that emotional balance is the key to successful trading. Through Practical Spiritual Astrology we have an opportunity to restore inner harmony, enhance emotional balance, and make wiser choices in the markets.
In our striving to bring our most cherished dreams into manifestation, we often hit big obstacles. If we are willing now to open ourselves to the fullness of divine inspiration, however, we may realize that our stressful experiences are actually doorways to transformational creativity.
"To have courage for whatever comes in life--everything lies in that." -- Mother Teresa

The recent action for CEG has been bounded by Vulcanus planetary lines (H,24,N,0); if we get a solid daily close at 45.00 or better to break through the Vulcanus resistance we will enter a long position for the Model Portfolio, with an initial stop set at 43.75.
Constellation Brands Inc. (STZ)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 10/12/1999; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: Why shouldn't an astrologically-based portfolio have more than one constellation? STZ has climbed about 25% in the last 10 weeks, and its best transits are yet to come. Jupiter's upcoming station will conjoin the STZ First-Trade Sun, and transiting Venus will conjoin First-Trade Uranus in a couple of weeks. We expect that will add even more positive energy to the situation, so our plan is to add a long position in STZ to the Model Portfolio this week. We will set our initial stop at 48.00.
Toll Brothers Inc. (TOL)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 07/16/1986; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: The construction industry has been booming lately, and Toll Brothers is one of the strongest companies in that sector. The transits to the company's First-Trade horoscope present an interesting picture. TOL is going through a return of the True Lunar Node, with Saturn conjoining the First-Trade Sun and transiting Uranus in opposition to First-Trade Venus. That combination suggests that significant new business may be in the works, and we feel encouraged about adding a long position to the Model Portfolio this week, with an initial stop set at 70.75.
Wolseley PLC (WOS)
NYSE
First Trade Date: 05/31/2001; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: With transiting Pluto in opposition to First-Trade Jupiter, this stock has been in a strong growth mode for the past two years, and has just broken out to a fresh new high in last week's trading. That spurt was no doubt triggered by transiting Jupiter making contact with the First-Trade IC. Jupiter is slowing down as it moves towards its stationary point, and its favorable transiting position will be augmented in a couple of weeks by transiting Venus conjoining the WOS First-Trade Descendant. Our plan is thus to add an immediate long position in WOS to the Model Portfolio, setting our initial stop at 39.00.
Weight Watchers International Inc. (WTW)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 11/15/2001; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: This year's Number One New Year's Resolution is once again a pledge to lose weight, and Weight Watchers remains one of the most popular weight-loss programs available. The stock is gaining weight, however, thanks to transiting Jupiter getting ready to make its station right on the WTW First-Trade Midheaven. Its impact is already being felt, but it will get an extra kicker as the exact station forms, with Mars conjoining the WTW First-Trade Ascendant, the Sun conjoining First-Trade Mars, and the Moon conjoining First-Trade Venus. This should give WTW enough energy to break through the resistance that it's getting from Admetos (G,24,N,0); in anticipation of that move, we plan to add a long position to the Model Portfolio this week. We will set our initial stop at 44.25.
