FinancialCyclesWeekly.com #0450 – December 12-18, 02004 with Tim Bost
COMMENT: Commodity prices continued to fall last week, continuing the declines we noted in our market comments and sector reports in our last issue. Oil, gold, and silver led the way down. The Dollar Index, however, failed to penetrate the Saturn support zone (G,30,N,0) that we have been watching in the 80.50 to 80.75 range. It looks like Saturn may continue to slow the greenback’s fall at this point, although with Mercury in retrograde motion, the Saturn support may be quite temporary.
MAJOR UNIVERSITY WARNS STUDENTS AGAINST MICROSOFT
We were chatting recently with our web designer (www.folkdude.com), who commented that “for many computer users Microsoft’s Internet Explorer IS the internet. Not only do they not use other browsers; they don’t understand that the internet even exists outside the realm of the Microsoft product.”
Apparently, though, that misconception isn’t universal in the academic world. Last week Penn State University, which has an enrollment of over 80,000, urged its students to avoid using Internet Explorer and to switch instead to alternative browsers such as Mozilla, Opera, Firefox or Safari. The university’s Information Technology Services said it gave the students the advice "because the threats are real and alternatives exist to mitigate Web browser vulnerabilities," adding that "The University computing community [should] use standards-based Web browsers other than Internet Explorer to help minimize exposure to attacks that occur through browser vulnerabilities."
The fact that Penn State Information Technology Services made the recommendations while Mercury was in retrograde motion was not entirely inappropriate. Mercury retrograde periods are great for re-thinking, re-doing, or re-organizing plans and projects, and Penn State’s push to change computer habits was right on target.
CANADIAN TRAVEL OPTIONS INCREASINGLY ATTRACTIVE
We have been traveling in several southeastern states during the past 10 days or so, and have just returned to our home office in Sarasota, Florida. As always, we welcome the opportunity to observe first-hand some of the local attitudes and circumstances in various places along the road. A couple of themes seemed very much in evidence during our most recent trip.
First, there’s a clear “dumbing down” of personnel and services in most of the locations we visited. It’s not that we have previously experienced high levels of intelligence and consciousness on previous occasions; far from it, in fact. But during the past couple of weeks we have really been struck with the nearly universal levels of ineptness, inefficiency, apathy, and general lack of consciousness in the restaurants, retail establishments, and hotels we visited. Again, we don’t set unusually high standards when it comes to interactions of this sort; we are far too experienced to have high hopes. But we were truly amazed to see the general prevalence of incompetence in the places we visited. Our first impulse was to give the credit (or blame) to the current retrograde phase of Mercury, but somehow even that explanation wasn’t sufficient.
The biggest challenges, of course, came during the portions of our journey which required air travel. We have never been particularly impressed with the effectiveness of the increasingly invasive security procedures at U.S. airports, and have done our best to inure ourselves to the officious and often demeaning delays and obstructions created by airport security personnel. During the past week, however, we were especially disappointed, mainly because with all the recent publicity about passengers being groped by airport security guards, we had hoped that we could garner a little groping ourselves, preferably by an attractively-uniformed sentinel of the opposite sex.
No such luck. Apparently we don’t match the profile of a major security risk, or just don’t look gropable enough, to attract that kind of attention. We’ll just have to resign ourselves to airport anonymity.
Nevertheless, with all the inconveniences that are now a part of dealing with U.S. airports, we weren’t surprised to learn this week that business is booming for Air Canada. More and more international passengers are choosing to route their travel through Vancouver, Toronto, or Montreal rather than contend with the harassment at U.S. airports. In fact, the Canadian airline’s traffic destined for Latin America and originating outside Canada has tripled during the past 11 months, with most of the extra passengers flying between Japan and Brazil. Business is so good that Air Canada has emerged from bankruptcy during the past three months, and has recently expanded its services to Chile, Peru, Argentina, Costa Rica, Colombia, Venezuela, and Cuba.
NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN MARKET ANALYSIS
Speaking of Canada, we were pleased to hear from our friend Sergey Tarassov in Toronto that he is currently completing a new project he has been working on for some time. It’s a new computer program he calls Timing Solution. “The main purpose of the Timing Solution program,” Sergey says, “is to create a projection line for any consistent time series data. As the most consistent and well recorded data can be found in the world of finance and science, Timing Solution is a good decision support tool for everybody working in these areas. The program is designed to make a prediction of future changes in the process that you explore. The reliable forecast can be made before the actual events take place.”
The new program “compares the process to be explored (like price changes for some particular market) to the well-known one (it might be planetary movements, temperature changes or other types of events). In the process of comparison (using different math methods), some conclusions are made regarding to correlations between these two processes. Based on those conclusions, models are created and tested on independent data. Finally, the prediction is made which might be useful for decision making and building a trading strategy or planning some other activity.
“Timing Solution is a combination of our own research and findings, methods of modern mathematics (such as Neural Networks, Fuzzy Logic, Wavelet Analysis), and some special techniques (like tested and proven astrological techniques).”
At first glance, the new software looks like a massively powerful research and forecasting tool, one that could potentially revolutionize market strategies. We say “at first glance,” because that’s all we have had time to give it: Timing Solution will definitely take a while to explore completely—which we intend to do! For more information on Sergey’s new project, check his website at www.timingsolution.com.

THE WEEK AHEAD
We have plenty of earnings reports scheduled this week, including Cooper Companies (COO), ABM Industries (ABM), Cuno Inc. (CUNO), KB Home (KBH), ADC Telecommunications (ADCT), Pier 1 Imports (PIR), Engineered Support Systems (EASI), Robbins & Myers (RBN), Herman Miller (MLHR), Veritas DGC Inc. (VTS), Winnebago Industries (WGO), Lennar Corporation (LEN), Scholastic Corporation (SCHL), Biomet (BMET), Lehman Brothers Holdings (LEH), Bed Bath & Beyond (BBBY), Best Buy (BBY), Verity Inc. (VRTY), Tektronix (TEK), Worthington Industries (WOR), Fedex Corporation (FDX), 3Com Corporation (COMS), Nike (NKE), Cintas Corporation (CTAS), Apollo Group (APOL), Quicksilver Resources (KWK), Goldman Sachs Group (GS), Carnival Corporation (CCL), Adobe Systems (ADBE), Take-Two Interactive Software (TTWO), Darden Restaurants (DRI), Oracle Corporation (ORCL), Family Dollar Stores (FDO), Carmax Inc. (KMX), and Circuit City Stores (CC).
Friday is a quadruple witching day for options expirations, so we should see some lively action then as traders scramble to close out positions.
This will also be a fairly lively week for economic news, with October numbers for Business Inventories and International Trade on tap, as well as November figures for Retail Sales, Industrial Production, Capacity Utilization, and Housing Starts, along with the November Consumer Price Index. The Philadelphia Fed will release its December survey, and we’ll also get a look at the Third Quarter Current Account figures.
The Federal Reserve Open Market Committee will be meeting on Tuesday, and the general wisdom is that they will raise interest rates by another 25 basis points. With U.S. wholesale prices up another 0.5% in November, it isn’t likely that the Fed will do anything less than that. But with geocentric and heliocentric aspects to Kronos coming near the time of the Fed’s anticipated announcement Tuesday afternoon, we may see their pronouncement carry unusual clout, with a hefty reaction from the markets.
A Sun/Pluto conjunction and a Venus/Saturn trine both hit in the middle of the trading day on Monday, so we should get a fairly powerful start to the week’s market action. Mercury is still in retrograde motion, and we get Mercury sextiles to Jupiter and Neptune to highlight the week’s emphasis on the planet of commerce. There will be a brief period early in the trading day on Tuesday with the Moon void-of-course, so we will delay opening any positions that morning. Another lunar void on Thursday will keep us away from the trading action until that afternoon; with Venus changing signs just after noon Thursday could bring some significant shifts in market direction.
Throughout the week there will be lots of fourth-harmonic action, both heliocentrically and geocentrically. We will primarily be concentrating on the geocentric planetary lines (G,90,N,0) however, focusing particularly on the Sun, Mars, Venus, Uranus, Pluto, Chiron, Hades, and Apollon.
Have a great week!

SPIRITUAL FOCUS FOR THE WEEK
The greatest traders have all understood that emotional balance is the key to successful trading. Through Practical Spiritual Astrology we have an opportunity to restore inner harmony, enhance emotional balance, and make wiser choices in the markets.
We have a wonderful opportunity now to create a fresh start emotionally and materially, but we will need to expand our thinking and open our hearts to broader possibilities if we want to reap the full benefit of the time. Along the way, we have a chance to refine our expectations for love, harmony, and esthetic appreciation.
“Nothing in life is to be feared; it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less.” –Marie Curie

STOCKS TO WATCH: ACXM, CNTY, DHI, HLEX.
Acxiom Corporation (ACXM)
NASDAQ; optionable
First Trade Date: 12/14/1983; 10:00 a.m.
Trading Strategy: This stock has several things going on right now that suggest a major transition ahead: transiting Jupiter is conjoining First-Trade Mars, hinting at a broader range of trading activity for the stock. Transiting Cupido is conjoining First-Trade Uranus, signaling the possibility of sudden changes that impact a wide audience. And transiting Pluto is conjoining the First-Trade Sun/Jupiter conjunction, adding tremendous clout to the transformative potential of the situation. With this kind of combination at work, our plan is to add a long position in ACXM early during the coming trading week. We will set our initial stop at 25.20.
Century Casinos, Inc. (CNTY)
NASDAQ
First Trade Date: 11/10/1993; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: With Jupiter conjoining the CNTY First-Trade Midheaven, this is definitely a stock to keep an eye on. But in this case there are a couple of other positive factors as well: transiting Pluto has taken up residence on the CNTY First-Trade Ascendant, and transiting Venus is currently conjoining the CNTY First-Trade Pluto. CNTY has just pulled back slightly from having set a new 52-week high. Our plan is thus to add a long position in CNTY to the Model Portfolio this week, with an initial stop set at 7.75.
D. R. Horton Inc. (DHI)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 12/14/1995; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: Transiting Saturn has recently crossed over the DHI First-Trade Descendant, laying the groundwork for some positive price action. That’s coming now in the form of a strong rally on solid volume as transiting Chiron conjoins the DHI First-Trade Ascendant at the stock’s Solar Return. At the same time, transiting Pluto is conjoining the First-Trade Sun, transiting Apollon is conjoining the First-Trade Lunar Node, and transiting Venus is conjoining First-Trade Cupido. With that much action going on, we have everything we need to add a long position early this week. Our initial stop will be set at 35.10.
Healthextras, Inc. (HLEX)
NASDAQ
First Trade Date: 12/14/1999; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: HLEX is also having a Solar Return this week, and the overall set-up is quite similar to what we have just seen for DHI: Saturn and Chiron on the Ascendant/Descendant axis, plus Pluto conjoining the First-Trade Sun. In this case, however, there are a couple of additional factors: transiting Neptune is conjoining the First-Trade Mars/Uranus conjunction and transiting Cupido is conjoining the First-Trade Chiron/Pluto conjunction. That’s a lot to keep up with, but we feel that there’s enough positive potential for us to add a long position in HLEX to the Model Portfolio this week. We will set our initial stop at 15.00.
