Financial Cycles
December 5, 2004
FinancialCyclesWeekly.com #0449 – December 5-11, 02004 with Tim Bost
COMMENT: The speculative nature of the futures markets was made abundantly clear again last week when crude oil prices plunged, with many of the traders who had pumped up prices in recent months suddenly deciding to dump their contracts. Oil prices dipped by about $7 a barrel, going all the way down to $42.05 to hit a three-month low, and we should start to see lower prices at the gas pump as well, just in time for holiday driving.
JOBS REPORT & RETAIL RESULTS ARE TWIN DISAPPOINTMENTS
The Labor Department’s report on employment struck a sour note with Wall Street last week, since far fewer jobs were created than most analysts had anticipated. Another disappointment was the word from retailers, revealing that November sales were generally well below expectations, in spite of high hopes by many chain stores that the post-Thanksgiving shopping frenzy would lift their numbers. Apparently most consumers are eager to hunt down bargains, take advantage of sales, and cash in coupons, but aren’t very enthusiastic about paying full price.
The negative impact is primarily at the low end of the retail spectrum, however, which seems to coincide with the tepid pace of job growth. Luxury goods are still in brisk demand, as the gap between the Haves and the Have-Nots seems to be widening dramatically. For example, we spoke this week with a high-end jeweler; he told us that while his lower-priced jewelry items, featuring smaller size precious stones, are moving rather sluggishly right now, he is having big problems trying to find 3 or 4 carat diamonds for his inventory, since there is such a strong rush for the more costly purchases.
DOLLAR/SATURN PAS DE DEUX
The dollar continued its dive last week, with the Dollar Index dropping by 1.04 percent, the euro hitting yet another all-time high, and the yen posting a five-year high against the American currency. Thus far, however, the sliding Greenback has failed to penetrate the next level down for geocentric Saturn resistance (G,30,N,0). As we commented last week, we anticipate “an even weaker dollar ahead, with a short-term target for the Dollar Index in the 80.50 – 80.75 range,” which is where we are expected Saturn to come back into play, at least temporarily.
With Friday’s Dollar Index close of 80.93 just off the low for the week of 80.91, we are getting near that critical support zone. We will have to wait and see what the trading action brings next week, but this is definitely a situation that bears close attention.
CYCLE TECHNICIAN GETS NATIONAL ATTENTION
We were quite pleased to see the work of our friend Stan Harley featured in the current (12/6) issue of Barron’s. While he is not a market astrologer, Stan is keenly aware of the impact of astrological correspondences in his work analyzing market cycles, and we have enjoyed sharing the speaker’s platform with him at various conferences during the past few years. His bullish forecast for U.S. equities, based on his work with the 78.4-week stock market cycle, earned him a banner headline in the Barron’s “Market Watch” column.

THE WEEK AHEAD
This week should bring us earnings reports from Joseph A. Bank Clothiers (JOSB), Vista Care Inc. (VSTA), Navistar International (NAV), Sanderson Farms (SAFM), the Kroger Company (KR), Photronics Inc. (PLAB), Hovnanian Enterprises (HOV), Comtech Telecommunications (CMTL), Net2Phone Inc. (NTOP), the Toro Company (TTC), AutoZone Inc. (AZO), Carrekar Corporation (CANI), Dave & Busters (DAB), Korn Ferry International (KFY), Portal Software (PRSF), Movado Group (MOV), Ciena Corporation (CIEN), Finisar Corporation (FNSR), Costco Wholesale (COST), Nordson Corporation (NDSN), Toll Brothers (TOL), National Semiconductor (NSM), Esterline Technology (ESL) and Shuffle Master (SHFL).
On the economic front, we will be watching significant numbers on October Consumer Credit, October Wholesale Inventories, and November Import Prices. We also anticipate reports on Third Quarter Productivity, the November Producer Price Index, and the preliminary December report from the University of Michigan on Consumer Sentiment.
Astrologically the week features a build-up to Saturday’s New Moon, which is particularly powerful because it conjoins Pluto. Retrograde Mercury gets some emphasis by conjoining Pluto and the Sun and by opposing the transneptunian planet Hades. There are lots of heliocentric Mercury dynamics with the transneptunians as well, so we will be looking at 24th harmonic planetary lines (H,24,N,0) for Mercury, Chiron, Hades, Zeus, Apollon, Vulcanus, and Poseidon in our weekly trading analysis.
Have a great week!

SPIRITUAL FOCUS FOR THE WEEK
The greatest traders have all understood that emotional balance is the key to successful trading. Through Practical Spiritual Astrology we have an opportunity to restore inner harmony, enhance emotional balance, and make wiser choices in the markets.
Our thoughts and words are much more powerful now than we are likely to realize; they can alienate others unless we are willing to admit the possibility that we can transform our own consciousness. In order to do so, however, we will be obliged to release some of our most cherished illusions.
“Do not give in to cowardliness, Arjuna. It is not like you. Shake off this faintheartedness and arise!” –Bhagavad Gita

STOCKS TO WATCH: AD, ASCA, CA, UPS.
Advo Inc. (AD)
NYSE
First Trade Date: 02/25/1993; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: When Saturn passes over an angle in a First-Trade horoscope, it is often an indication that the stock can build a base which will empower an upward move. That is one of the things that attracted us to Advo right now, with Saturn currently conjunct the AD First-Trade IC. In addition, Mars is crossing the First-Trade Descendant, adding energy to the picture, and Jupiter is conjunct First-Trade Apollon. This is a positive set-up motivating us to add a long position in AD to the Model Portfolio this week; we will set our initial stop on the Chiron line (H,24,N,0) at 34.35.
Ameristar Casinos, Inc. (ASCA)
NASDAQ; optionable
First Trade Date: 11/09/1993; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: ASCA is one of two stocks we are watching this week with Jupiter conjoining the First-Trade Midheaven, Pluto conjoining the First-Trade Ascendant, and Mars and Venus conjoining the First-Trade Sun. We like this combination enough to consider a long position this week in both stocks. In the case of ASCA, we will set our initial stop at 39.20.
Computer Associates International, Inc. (CA)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 09/11/1986; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: With Saturn crossing its First-Trade Midheaven, CA is getting some very powerful energy at work on its chart. While it may restrain the price of the stock a bit, at least temporarily, it could also provide the opportunity for a significant upward price move once the transit passes. We also like the fact that transiting Pluto is conjoining the CA First-Trade Moon, suggesting a powerful shifting of priorities that could open up huge market potential for the company. Our plan is to add a long position in CA this week, setting our initial stop at 29.32.
United Parcel Service Class B (UPS)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 11/10/1999; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: UPS has a current set of transits to its First-Trade chart that are very similar to the situation we just considered with ASCA. In the case of UPS, however, we also have the transiting Sun conjoining the First-Trade Moon this week, so we feel even more confident about adding a long position. We will do so early in the trading week. UPS is currently trying to work its way through a Vulcanus line (H,24,N,0) at 85.70, so we will be setting our initial stop at 83.30, the next-lowest increment of that line.
