FinancialCyclesWeekly.com #0448 – November 28-December 4, 02004 with Tim Bost

COMMENT: The past week was one of contradictions, with some signs of renewed economic strength along with some economic disappointments, a few profitable trading setups in the midst of an increasingly treacherous trading environment, and yet another record low for the dollar versus the euro.

FREEFALL FOR THE GREENBACK
As we noted last week, we have been counting on geocentric Saturn (G,30,N,0) to keep a floor under the dollar’s plunge, but that Saturn support was decisively broken last week, leaving us with a currency in freefall. The G20 meeting of developed and developing nations made it clear that there won’t be any international bail-out for the buck, and just the rumor that China might be moving into euros and abandoning the dollar was enough to make currency traders very jittery. We’re looking for an even weaker dollar ahead, with a short-term target for the Dollar Index in the 80.50 – 80.75 range.

BLACK FRIDAY GETS MIXED REVIEWS
Last Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, was closely watched for signs of renewed strength in the retail sector. The initial buying spurt by consumers was apparently quite strong, but then it tapered off during the rest of the weekend. The net result is a sense of cautious optimism; consumers are clearly in the market for bargains and are likely to show improving sentiment in the upcoming economic reports because of slightly lower oil prices, an improving employment picture, and the end of the presidential election. Nevertheless, we still aren’t seeing the kind of confidence we need to build a real fire under the recovery process.

MEXICO FIGHTS TO CONTROL INFLATION
The Central Bank in Mexico announced plans this past week for yet another hike in interest rates. It was the fifth such move since July, with the Banco de Mexico Governor Guillermo Ortiz working hard to hit the country’s 3 percent inflation target after consumer prices have jumped by 5.4 percent during the past 12 months.
The moves are an interesting echo of Alan Greenspan and the Federal Reserve, of course, but they are also significant from an astrological perspective. The horoscope for Mexican independence (9/29/1821; 18:00 LMT, Mexico City) is experiencing its annual Venus return, highlighting monetary issues. But the chart for the Mexican constitution (1/31/1917; 16:00 LMT, Queretaro) is going through a Saturn return, so it is time to get serious about fiscal responsibility and indebtedness.

ONE STEP FORWARD, TWO STEPS BACK
Mercury goes into retrograde motion this Tuesday, starting one of its regular three-week periods of being out of phase with the rest of the planetary family. This is a time in which challenges in communication and transportation are likely to create extra headaches, but it’s also an excellent time for reviewing and revising plans, for cleanup and reorganization, and for pushing overdue projects ahead. We just want to give ourselves a little extra slack with schedules and travel time, and add a little extra caution when it comes to signing important documents!
From the trader’s standpoint, the Mercury retrograde period from November 30 through December 20 is a time when we are likely to see unanticipated short-term reversals in market trends. That means we will have to be extra alert and nimble if we choose to trade actively, watching developments closely and standing ready to take profits in a hurry if the tides start to turn.

THE WEEK AHEAD

It will be a fairly busy week in market news, with some important economic numbers coming out and renewed filing of earnings reports. The companies we will be keeping an eye in the earnings department include Semtech Corporation (SMTC), Donaldson Company (DCI), Smithfield Foods (SFD), United Natural Foods (UNFI), Angelica Corporation (AGL), Blyth, Inc. (BTH), Copart Inc. (CPRT), Chico’s FAS Inc. (CHS), Ferrellgas Partners (FGP), Jackson Hewitt (JTX), Ominivision Technologies (OVTI), Credence Systems (CMOS), Comverse Technologies (CMVT), Dollar General (DG), Neiman Marcus Group (NMGA), Pall Corporation (PLL), Synopsys Inc. (SNPS), Synovis Life Technologies (SYNO), Ulticom, Inc. (ULCM), Albertson’s Inc. (ABS), CSK Auto Corporation (CAO), DelMonte Foods (DLM), Kellwood Company (KWD), Mandalay Resort Group (MBG), Methode Electronics (METH), Quanex Corporation (NX), Ultimate Electronics (ULTE), Stewart & Stevenson (SVC), Fleetwood Enterprises (FLE), and Kirkland’s Inc. (KIRK).
The expected economic news of the week will not only include numbers on Consumer Confidence and the Fed’s Beige Book, but also the Third Quarter preliminary figures on the Gross Domestic Product. In addition, we will be looking for October numbers on Personal Income, Personal Consumption, Factory Orders, and Construction Spending, as well as November figures on Unemployment and Nonfarm Payrolls. To top things off, we’re also anticipating the November Purchasing Managers Index from Chicago and the November ISM Index as well.
Aside from this week’s start of the Mercury retrograde period, we should get a positive boost to the market action from Monday’s Jupiter/Neptune trine, with a Mars/Neptune square on Tuesday adding to the action and perhaps bringing a bit of caution to the trading environment as well. The annual Sun/Cupido conjunction comes in the afternoon on Wednesday, so the day’s economic reports may get a spin from the financial media that suggests we’re all one big happy family in an improving economy. Friday features a void-of-course Moon throughout the trading day, so we will step aside from the markets and start our weekend early, looking forward to the intense magnetism that next Sunday’s Mars/Venus conjunction brings.
We will be watching the heliocentric action in our daily trading this week, tracking fourth harmonic planetary lines for Mercury, Venus, Chiron, Kronos and Zeus (H,90,N,0). Zeus in the first harmonic seems to be especially strong right now in defining market price action, so we will pay particular attention to its action.
Have a great week!

Trading Strategy: CRR has transiting Saturn conjoining its First-Trade Ascendant and transiting Jupiter hitting its First-Trade IC, with an added impact from transiting Neptune conjoining its First-Trade Moon. Right now this stock is working to break through the highs it set in early October; it looks like it is going to be successful. Our plan is to add a long position to the Model Portfolio early this week, setting our initial stop at 74.30.

Frozen Food Express Industries, Inc. (FFEX)
NASDAQ
First Trade Date: 05/25/1993; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: Like CRR, FFEX has transiting Saturn conjoining its First-Trade Ascendant and transiting Jupiter conjoining its First-Trade IC. In the case of this stock, however, transiting Chiron is conjoining the First-Trade conjunction of Uranus and Neptune, heating up matters considerably. FFEX has shown some dramatic price action recently, gapping upward last Friday and then hitting a high that exactly coincided with the fourth-harmonic Vulcanus line (H,90,N,0). If we get a daily close at 11.29 or higher for this stock we will enter at the open of the following day’s trading, adding a long position and setting our initial stop at 9.15.

Urban Outfitters, Inc. (URBN)
NASDAQ; optionable
First Trade Date: 11/09/1993; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: With Jupiter crossing its First-Trade Midheaven, URBN would make a fairly straightforward astro-play right now. But there is the added impact of transiting Pluto sitting on the URBN First-Trade Ascendant, too! We are ready to add a long position in this stock early this week; we will set our initial stop at 38.33.

Vintage Petroleum Inc. (VPI)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 08/03/1990; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: When transiting Saturn is conjoining First-Trade Jupiter, we might expect a stock to start trending down. But in the case of VPI, that is not all that is going on. Transiting Chiron is conjunct First-Trade Saturn, transiting Pluto is conjunct the First-Trade IC, and transiting Mars is about to conjoin First-Trade Pluto as well. With al that action going on and VPI challenging the resistance it encountered four years ago, we’re ready to add a long position to the Model Portfolio early this week. We will set our initial stop at 20.30.
