FinancialCyclesWeekly.com #0447 – November 21-27, 02004 with Tim Bost
COMMENT: We got a phone message from Dean Clairmont in San Diego late Friday afternoon, suggesting that we take a look at that day’s planetary transits to the inception horoscope for the Federal Reserve (December 23, 1913, 18:02 EST, Washington, DC). It’s indeed an interesting chart, with transiting Chiron conjoining the Fed Jupiter, transiting Mercury conjoining the Fed Venus, and perhaps most significant of all, transiting Saturn, still essentially stationary, conjoining the Fed Neptune.
What triggered Dean’s suggestion, of course, was Alan Greenspan’s comments earlier that day on the stability of the dollar and the danger of the deficit. With the Moon moving into Pisces, Mr. Greenspan, who is a sun-sign Pisces, had used unusually unambiguous language in noting that "It seems persuasive that, given the size of the US current account deficit, a diminished appetite for adding to dollar balances must occur at some point."
In other words, we can expect the dollar to continue to fall, and the Federal Reserve won’t do anything to stop it. Greenspan’s comment was hardly news, since the dollar has been hemorrhaging wildly in recent weeks and the U.S. deficit has reached staggering proportions. What was noteworthy, however, was the timing of his statement, on the eve of a meeting in Berlin of the G20 developed and developing nations, where the future value of the dollar was very much a topic of discussion. The Fed Chairman’s comment also came just three days after U.S. Treasury Secretary John Snow said in London that attempts to stop the dollar’s fall would be essentially pointless because "efforts to impose non-market valuations on currencies is at best unrewarding and chequered."
In the meantime, the Dollar Index has continued its tango with the Saturn support line (G,30,N,0) that we have been following for the past month. We have gotten a few daily closes below this line, but intraday trading above the line has been struggling to slow the dollar’s fall, so as far as we’re concerned we haven’t broken support unequivocally, and could still get the retracement we have previously mentioned. As we noted last week, however, if this support zone “is broken decisively, we still expect huge negative momentum” for the dollar. Based on our astrological analysis, that scenario should bring another quick drop in the dollar’s value of about 3% or so, taking the Dollar Index down to the 80.50 – 80.75 range.
EVEN MORE DEBT
The plunging dollar has some members of the European Community worried, since it’s likely to hurt the export picture there, and exports are responsible for most of the current growth in the European economy. But here in the U.S., the Congress doesn’t seem very concerned with the falling dollar, or with its connection to the growing deficit that Alan Greenspan is so concerned about. In fact, the U.S. House of Representatives wasted no time after the election, and passed a measure last week raising the Federal debt limit by a whopping 37%. Apparently anything that resembles fiscal responsibility is the farthest thing from our Congressional representatives’ minds, especially if it might mean giving up favorite pork-barrel programs.
ANOTHER ACCURATE FORECAST
In our comment last week that Raymond Merriman “was virtually a lone voice in the astrological community in forecasting a victory for President Bush,” we didn’t intend to suggest that Ray was the ONLY astrologer to do so. Another notable exception in providing an accurate forecast was our good friend Bill Meridian, who not only called the Bush victory in his excellent Cycles Research Early Warning Service newsletter (www.billmeridian.com), but in the pages of Dell Horoscope magazine as well. “The President will be having his second Saturn return during the election,” he noted there, adding that “It is quite possible that he will win a Pyrrhic victory, one that is gained at some enormous expense, such as his health. It is a fact that no U.S. war president has finished a second term in office. Either the president who held office during a time of war has lost the subsequent election, such as George Bush, Sr., or he has resigned (Nixon) or died (FDR). Such a serious development would be reflected in the U.S. national chart, and we do find such confirmation.”
A CHILLY RECEPTION IN SANTIAGO
The impact of President Bush’s Saturn return is already becoming quite obvious, in fact. The parade of resigning cabinet members who chose to leave the administration immediately after his reelection is typical of the kind of serious career restructuring that a Saturn return often brings. And the president doesn’t seem oblivious to the enormously increased threat to his physical safety that is currently emerging. The inauguration in January will bring record-breaking security precautions, turning Washington D.C. into an armed camp for the event.
And in the meantime, Mr. Bush is already showing some sensitivity about being personally protected. He personally scuffled with the police in Chile this week when they tried to block one of his six body guards from following him into a gathering at the 21-nation summit meeting there. Hours later, Ricardo Lagos, the president of Chile, abruptly cancelled a grand state dinner for 200 people after White House security personnel insisted that all the dignitaries attending the event would have to pass through metal detectors and possibly be searched.
"President Lagos considered it unacceptable that the top authorities in the country and leading businessmen be submitted to searches that are humiliating," an aide to the Chilean president said.

THE WEEK AHEAD
With the Thanksgiving holiday cutting market activity short this week, we won’t see as many earnings reports as we have lately. The ones we will be watching will include Krispy Kreme (KKD), Mesa Air Group (MESA), Campbell Soup Company (CPB), Toys “R” Us (TOY), Florida Rock Industries (FRK), Woodward Governor (WGOV), Valspar Corporation (VAL), Brocade Communications Systems (BRCD), Computer Network Technologies (CMNT), Tivo Inc. (TIVO), Genesis Healthcare (GHCI), Deere & Company (DE), Analog Devices Inc. (ADI), Eaton Vance Corporation (EV), Dollar Tree Stores (DLTR), H. J. Heinz Company (HNZ), Fred’s Inc. (FRED), Michaels Stores Inc. (MIK), H&R Block (HRB), Possis Medical Inc. (POSS), Tech Data Corporation (TECD), Wind River Systems (WIND), Tweeter Home Entertainment (TWTR), Vital Signs Inc. (VITL), Coldwater Creek, Inc. (CWTR), Perry Ellis International (PERY), Hormel Foods Corporation (HRL), and Patterson Companies (PDCO).
It will also be a light week for economic news. We’ll be looking for the numbers on October Existing Home Sales, October New Home Sales, October Durable Goods Orders, and the final report on November Consumer Sentiment from the University of Michigan.
We expect Monday to be a particularly active day in the markets, thanks to Venus changing signs, eclipse triggers by both the Sun and Venus, a Chiron/Admetos trine, and a Sun/Neptune quintile. Tuesday’s Saturn/Zeus quintile could produce some major frustrations for traders, but we’ll be checking out of the market action after lunch because of the void-of-course Moon. Wednesday is likely to bring renewed optimism to the trading environment, with a Mercury/Jupiter quintile, a Sun/Uranus square, and a Venus/Uranus trine all holding sway. The U.S. markets will be closed on Thursday for Thanksgiving, and we’re looking for light trading volume on Friday, with many market players choosing a long weekend. There’s a Full Moon at the week’s market close, however, so the day could bring some remarkably profitable opportunities for those who stick around for the shortened trading session.
Based on the number of quintiles we’ll be seeing this week, we will be keeping a close eye on the fifth harmonic in our astrological analysis. In particular, we will be looking at planetary lines (G,72,N,0) for the Sun, Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, Chiron and Zeus. We’ll add a fifth-harmonic Moon to the mix for our intra-day considerations.
Have a great week!

SPIRITUAL FOCUS FOR THE WEEK
The greatest traders have all understood that emotional balance is the key to successful trading. Through Practical Spiritual Astrology we have an opportunity to restore inner harmony, enhance emotional balance, and make wiser choices in the markets.
The repressed energies and pent-up frustrations within us have explosive potential now, so we would be wise to cultivate a more pervasive attitude of detachment, gratitude, and equanimity.
"If the only prayer you ever said was 'Thank You,' that would be enough." –Meister Eckhart

GLOBAL EQUITIES MARKETS LAST WEEK
We noted last week that the momentum of stocks was slowing worldwide, and that tendency has culminated in outright trend reversals. Stock markets around the world lost ground for the week, with notable exceptions in the Pacific Rim. Sydney and Tokyo put in respectable gains for the week, while Hong Kong and Singapore were left treading water. The Asian markets may be vulnerable to further weakness in the dollar, however, so we will be watching them closely this week.

STOCKS TO WATCH: AXP, BPT, HUM, SRZ.
American Express Company (AXP)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 05/18/1977; 10:00 a.m.
Trading Strategy: All four of the stocks we are watching this week have something in common: transiting Saturn is conjoining the First-Trade Ascendant for each company, while each also has transiting Jupiter conjoining the First-Trade IC. In the case of AXP, that Jupiter transit is particularly dynamic, since the AXP First-Trade Pluto conjoins the First-Trade IC, setting the stage for transiting Jupiter to conjoin First-Trade Pluto this week as well. On top of that, transiting Mars is currently conjoining the AXP First-Trade Uranus, so we should definitely get some short-term excitement from this stock. We’ll add a long position to the Model Portfolio early in the week, setting our initial stop at 54.89.
BP Prudhoe Bay Royal Trust (BPT)
NYSE
First Trade Date: 05/23/1989; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: The transits of Jupiter and Saturn to the First-Trade angles in the horoscope for BPT are augmented by a square from transiting Uranus to the First-Trade Sun/Mercury conjunction. We expect that to add some volatility to the trading situation. Our plan is to take a long position in BPT this week with an initial stop set at 43.67.
Humana Inc. (HUM)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 05/18/1971; 10:00 a.m.
Trading Strategy: Humana has a Jupiter/Neptune conjunction in its First-Trade chart, and the transiting Sun will conjoin it this week. In addition, the transiting True Lunar Node is conjoining the HUM Mercury/Venus conjunction, and Jupiter and Saturn are of course contacting First-Trade angles. We will add a long position near the start of the week, with our initial stop set at 22.08.
Sunrise Senior Living Inc. (SRZ)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 05/23/2001; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: Transiting Mars is square the SRZ First-Trade Neptune this week, so we anticipate this stock getting a bit of a boost. Our plan is to add a long position to the Model Portfolio early this week; we will set our initial stop at 40.80.
