FinancialCyclesWeekly.com #0446 – November 14-20, 02004 with Tim Bost

COMMENT: We have been tracking the fate of the U.S. dollar for the past few weeks, and have noted the significance of 12th-harmonic Saturn in providing support for the currency. During the past week’s trading the Dollar Index repeatedly flirted with the Saturn support line (G,30,N,0) with intraday lows on the line on Monday and Wednesday and a close on Friday on the line as well. In other words, we have yet to take out this important support factor, and the dollar could be ready for a short-term retracement back to the upside in the weeks ahead. We will be watching this Saturn support closely, however. If it is broken decisively, we still expect huge negative momentum.

FED MAKES A TWO-BIT MOVE
The rate hike by the Federal Reserve came as no surprise this past week. As usual, though, the language used in the announcement left more room for questions and speculation. The Open Market Committee’s statement about the interest rate increase noted that "With underlying inflation expected to be relatively low, the Committee believes that policy accommodation can be removed at a pace that is likely to be measured." In other words, if you would prefer to read that in English, the Fed thinks that inflation is under control, so it can safely continue to raise interest rates steadily but gradually.

EARTHQUAKES IN THE NEWS
We commented last week that the astrological dynamics at work would bring the possibility of “some literal or figurative earthquakes” in world events, so it was interesting to see the explosive nature of many events throughout the week. There was in fact an earthquake in Japan. Big crowds of people gathered with earthquake-like intensity in celebration at the announcement of the murder conviction of Scott Peterson, in grief at the burial of Yasir Arafat in Ramallah, and in a shopping frenzy at the opening of Karl Lagerfeld’s new designer line at H&M in Manhattan. And of course there were the violent outbreaks that marred the world scene, including the disturbance in the Ivory Coast and the U.S. assault on Fallujah.

MISSION NOT ACCOMPLISHED
It has been 18 months now since President Bush declared that major combat in Iraq had come to an end, with America’s “mission accomplished” in its invasion of the country. That hardly seemed the case this past week as the battle in Fallujah raged, however, bringing heavy casualties and an admission from military authorities that there are likely to be more intense engagements on the way.
While the cost of the occupation of Iraq in human lives and in the destruction of community is staggering, we don’t want to let it make us oblivious to the financial cost as well. This is an expensive war and its cost is likely to go much higher. While some of the latest economic reports and the current stock market rally are both encouraging, the long-term impact of the record deficits and the true cost of the country’s imperial adventures in Iraq and elsewhere must be taken into account in assessing the true health of the American economy.

TREND CHANGES FOR FUTURES
We noted last week that the Saturn and Uranus stations could bring “significant turns in the futures markets for cocoa and soybeans,” and that proved to be the case. The beans, which had been in a decisive downtrend since late August, showed signs of putting in a bottom. Cocoa followed the previous week’s solid action with a gap upward on the opening for the week, and then began consolidating after testing the highs set in July and August.

NAMES IN THE NEWS
There are several individuals who have been getting much-deserved attention in the media lately. Management guru Peter Drucker will be celebrating his 95th birthday this week, and is publishing a book of daily readings to note the occasion. Over the years Drucker’s influence on business and his insights on economic trends have been enormous.
We were quite pleased to see an eight-page article featuring an interview with Robert Prechter as the cover story in the November issue of Futures magazine. Bob Prechter is best known for his writings on Elliott Wave theory, but he has also made an important contribution in his studies of mass psychology and socionomics. Because of his long-range perspective and keen insights, his work should be required reading for any financial astrologer, but anyone interested in following the markets (or in surviving economic turbulence) should pay close attention to him as well. His book Conquer the Crash is now available in trade paperback; check out what he has to offer with a visit to www.elliottwave.com. By the way, Bob Prechter is still bearish on stocks. “People think we had a bear market in 2000-02,” he noted in the Futures interview, “but we didn’t; it was just the first wave down.”
We want to add our own personal kudos to Raymond Merriman, who consistently does solid work in market astrology and cycles analysis. Prior to the U.S. presidential election, Ray was virtually a lone voice in the astrological community in forecasting a victory for President Bush, based on his astute analysis of the planetary trends and their impact on the mood of the country. His work was especially noteworthy because most astrologers have a decidedly liberal bias in their personal politics, and that bias unfortunately skews much of their forecasting when they turn their attention to electoral contests. Ray Merriman publishes the M.M.A. Cycles Report; you’ll find his work on the web at www.mmacycles.com.

THE WEEK AHEAD

The earnings reports this week will feature a number of big retail players, and could bring us important information about the underlying strength of consumer sentiment and spending. The reports will include Lowe’s Companies (LOW), Wal-Mart Stores (WMT), Home Depot (HD), Network Appliances (NTAP), Nordstrom Inc. (JWN), Hewlett-Packard Company (HPQ), TJX Companies (TJX), BJ’s Wholesale Club (BJ), Staples (SPLS), J. C. Penney (JCP), Ross Stores (ROST), Gymboree Corporation (GYMB), Saks Inc. (SKS), Zale Corporation (ZLC), Medtronic Inc. (MDT), Applied Materials (AMAT), Hot Topic Inc. (HOTT), Intuit Inc. (INTU), Petsmart Inc. (PETM), Too Inc. (TOO), Big Lots Inc. The Philadelphia Fed is scheduled to release its November survey on Thursday. The week will also bring October reports on Industrial Production, Capacity Utilization, and Housing Starts, along with the October Producer Price Index and the October Consumer Price Index.
Venus is the triggering planet for much of the week’s significant astrological action, and much of that action will take place in the fourth harmonic. We’ll get Venus square Chiron, Venus square Vulcanus, Venus conjunct Apollon, and Venus square Saturn, with a Mars/Poseidon conjunction and a Mercury/Pluto conjunction thrown in next weekend for good measure. The void-of-course Moon periods this week don’t directly impact the market action. Our trading template for the week will thus include fourth-harmonic planetary lines (G,90,N,0) for Mercury, Venus, Mars, Saturn, Chiron, Pluto, Vulcanus, Apollon, and Poseidon as we watch for correct highs and lows in setting up our short-term positions.
Have a great week!

SPIRITUAL FOCUS FOR THE WEEK

The greatest traders have all understood that emotional balance is the key to successful trading. Through Practical Spiritual Astrology we have an opportunity to restore inner harmony, enhance emotional balance, and make wiser choices in the markets.

At this time we are called upon to take action, and as we act, our responsibility is not only to be decisive and energetic, but also to inquire: is what we are doing truly helpful and sustaining to those in our midst who are least fortunate?

“The greatest good you can do for another is not just to share your riches, but to reveal to him his own.” –Benjamin Disraeli

STOCKS TO WATCH: APH, BA, CA, UTX.

Amphenol Corporation (APH)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 11/08/1991; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: APH has spent the last couple of weeks starting to form a base on a fourth-harmonic Pluto line; this sets the stage for a potential upward move, which is also hinted at by transiting Jupiter conjoining the APH First-Trade Sun last week and by transiting Apollon lingering in a conjunction with the APH First-Trade Jupiter. We think the coming Mercury/Pluto conjunction will add just the extra energy this stock needs, so we plan to add a long position in APH to the Model Portfolio this week. We will set our initial stop at 33.75.

Boeing Company (BA)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 09/04/1935; 10:00 a.m.
Trading Strategy: The aircraft manufacturer has Pluto conjunct the Midheaven in its First-Trade horoscope, and right now transiting Saturn is stationary at the same spot. A mirrored fourth-harmonic Mercury line (G,90,Y,-1) carried BA down recently, with a reversal to the upside coming when the mirror line crossed the unmirrored line. At this point we see no reason for BA not to add some price growth, especially as Saturn starts to back away the First-Trade Midheaven and as transiting Jupiter approaches the BA First-Trade Ascendant. We thus plan to add a long position in BA toward the end of this week, setting our initial stop at 49.60.

Computer Associates International Inc. (CA)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 09/11/1986; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: CA has been riding a Venus line (G,90,N,0) quite dramatically for the past few weeks, and we like the looks of its positive trend, in spite of the fact that transiting Saturn is currently square First-Trade Hades. Transiting Pluto’s conjunction with the CA First-Trade Midheaven gives this stock enormous strength and it looks like the price level will respond nicely to the current Venus/Chiron square, so we will add a long position this week, setting our initial stop at 28.00.

United Technologies Corporation (UTX)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 09/05/1935; 10:00 a.m.
Trading Strategy: The Venus/Pluto square on October 20 sent UTX zooming upward, and we’re watching for additional action with next weekend’s Mercury/Pluto conjunction. With transiting Saturn crossing the First-Trade Midheaven we might get a short-term price pullback, but Jupiter is on its way to a conjunction with the First-Trade Ascendant just after the UTX Jupiter return. All this means we’re ready to add a long position in UTX to the Model Portfolio this week, setting our initial stop at 92.60.
