FinancialCyclesWeekly.com #0444 – October 31-November 6, 02004 with Tim Bost

COMMENT: To everyone’s surprise, the winner of this year’s Halloween costume contest was neither George W. Bush nor John Kerry. It wasn’t even scary old Dick Cheney, who barely needs a costume. The hands-down favorite turned out to be a contender we haven’t heard from in a while: Osama bin Laden!
The new video from Osama certainly put a strange spin on the closing days of the election campaign, but it’s not clear if its real impact went beyond keeping terrorism at the top of the news. That’s probably what led none other than the venerable Walter Cronkite to suggest that perhaps White House operative Karl Rove was somehow behind the video’s release, since the President would far rather have attention focused on terrorist threats than on the sagging state of the economy.
From our perspective, of course, the video had less to do with election possibilities and October surprises than with an astrological dynamic at work. As we have been commenting for the past several weeks, important—or at least memorable—events tend to take place near eclipses, and Osama’s surprise appearance less than 48 hours after Wednesday’s Lunar Eclipse certainly fills the bill!

IS THE DOLLAR REALLY STABILIZING?
We noted last week that the Dollar Index had broken through significant Saturn support, and that we were looking for a drop below 84.56 to test an important technical zone. The intraday low for the Index hit 84.73 on Tuesday, and the dollar has gained a little ground since then, closing out the week at 85.22. While that brings some short-term relief, it’s hardly enough to convince us that there is not still more downside to come. Unless the Dollar Index works its way back up above that Saturn line (G,30,N,0), we will continue to watch for a penetration of the 84.56 level and a strong move below.

NEPTUNE STATION SHOWS ITS POWER
Last week we mentioned using software programs in tandem to enhance results in trading and analysis, and gave an example which combined the power of TC2000 and Galactic Trader. Using the two programs together, we identified 10 stocks which had just responded to the planetary line created by Neptune at its direct station.
Of those 10 stocks, 7 have continued to move upward after bouncing off the Neptune line. A quick glance at last week’s trading for PCG, SPI, ORPH, RTIX, MGEE, and BOO will illustrate what we mean; just add a planetary line for Neptune set at G,24,N,0 to get a picture of the strength involved. Even Chiron (CHIR), a company which has been in a lot of trouble lately, seems to be finding support on the Neptune line. That’s perhaps appropriate, given Neptune’s association with pharmaceuticals.

THE WEEK AHEAD

This is a huge week for earnings, with over 800 companies reporting. Some of the major ones we will be keeping an eye on include ABN Amro Holdings (ABN), Maxim Integrated Products (MXIM), the Principal Financial Group (PFG), SYSCO Corporation (SYY), Toyota Motor Corporation (TM), Talisman Energy (TLM), Tyco International (TYC), Masco (MAS), XL Capital (XL), Clorox (CLX), Emerson Electric (EMR), DIRECTV Group (DTV), International Game Technology (IGT), Equity Office Properties Trust (EOP), PG&E Corporation (PCG), Prudential Financial (PRU), BCE (BCE), Portugal Telecom SGPS, S.A. (PT), Duke Energy Corporation (DUK), Canadian Natural Resources (CNQ), Electronic Data Systems (EDS), InterActiveCorp (IACI), QUALCOMM Inc. (QCOM), Alcan Inc. (AL), Time Warner (TWX), Becton Dickinson and Company (BDX), Credit Suisse Group (CSR), CareMark Rx, Inc. (CMX), Devon Energy Corporation (DVN), Hartford Financial Services (HIG), Manulife Financial Corporation (MFC), Petro-Canada (PCZ), Teva Pharmaceutical (TEVA), and Progress Energy (PGN).
The monthly unemployment reports, including Initial Claims, Average Workweek, Hourly Earnings, Nonfarm Payrolls, and the Unemployment Rate, will be the economic factors most likely to drive market action this week. We will also be getting reports on Auto Sales, Personal Income, Personal Spending, Construction Spending, Factory Orders, Productivity, Consumer Credit, and the ISM Index. In addition, the Bank of England and the Reserve Bank of Australia will be making interest rate announcements this week, which could impact the dollar and international exchanges.
A Void-of-Course Moon will slow down our entry into the markets on Monday morning, but we will be up and running by mid-day. With Mars forming hard aspects to both Apollon and Vulcanus on Monday, we could see some fairly explosive trading action, most likely with a bias to the upside! With the Sun parallel both Pluto and Chiron on Election Day, we will see the current power struggles leaving more than one party wounded, with a strong residual need for healing. A Venus/Jupiter conjunction on Thursday may leave us feeling surprisingly optimistic, however.
The biggest astrological news this week is a powerful fifth-harmonic configuration involving Venus, Jupiter, Pluto, Saturn and Zeus. Track planetary lines for all of them (G,73,N,0) to spot key areas for market action.
Have a great week!

GLOBAL EQUITIES MARKETS LAST WEEK

Our forecast last week of increasing weakness in the Australian stock market turned out to be premature. The All Ordinaries put in an exceptionally solid week, with prices in Sydney breaking out with Wednesday’s Lunar Eclipse. In the process, the index not only set new highs, but did so with a trading range that engulfed the market action of the previous two weeks and then concluded Friday’s trading with a strong finish. The positive bias in Australia mirrored the market action around the world, with the sole major exception being Japan, where economic woes and earthquake recovery continue to slow things down in the equities market.

STOCKS TO WATCH: AAPL, BBY, BG, BID, JNC, LAYN, RD.

Apple Computer, Inc. (AAPL)
NASDAQ; optionable
First Trade Date: 12/12/1980; 10:00 a.m.
Trading Strategy: There is an interesting feature in the Apple Computer First-Trade chart: a conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn. That conjunction is currently being transited by Jupiter, and at the same time trends in Pluto is conjoining the Apple First-Trade Sun, while transiting Mars activates First-Trade Pluto and transiting Mercury passes over the AAPL First-Trade Midheaven. What a combination! We plan to take advantage of this situation by adding a long position in AAPL to the Model Portfolio this week, setting our initial stop at 48.00.

Best Buy Company Inc. (BBY)
NYSE; optionable the
First Trade Date: 07/20/1987; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: With transiting Saturn conjunct the BBY First-Trade Sun, what we are seeing now could actually be the beginning of a base forming, as a lead-in to a bigger move upward. We will be adding a long position to the Model Portfolio this week, setting our initial stop at 56.75.

Bunge, Ltd. (BG)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 08/02/2001; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: Pluto is sitting on the BG First-Trade IC, adding enormous strength to overall trading picture for this stock. That picture is a positive one, too, with transiting Jupiter trine First-Trade Neptune. Is it any wonder that BG gapped upward last week? With that kind of technical confirmation, we are ready to take a long position this week. Our initial stop will be set at 44.75.

Sotheby’s Holding Class A (BID)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 03/28/1990; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: The famous auction company is looking quite attractive now, thanks to the transiting Lunar Node conjoining the First-Trade moon. In addition transiting Jupiter is in opposition to the First-Trade Sun, transiting Pluto is crossing the First-Trade Descendant, and transiting Neptune is forming a conjunction with First-Trade Mars. That’s a lot of action to keep up with, but as far as we can tell the balance is quite positive. If we get a daily close at 18.95 or above to penetrate the current fifth-harmonic planetary cluster, we’ll be adding a long position in BID to the Model Portfolio this week, sending our initial stop at 17.55.

Nuveen Investments Inc. Class A (JNC)
NYSE
First Trade Date: 05/20/1992; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: Saturn has just finished its transit of the JNC First-Trade Ascendant, and Jupiter is crossing the First-Trade IC. Need we say more? We will add a long position to the Model Portfolio this week, with an initial stop set at 30.25.

Layne Christensen Company (LAYN)
NASDAQ
First Trade Date: 08/20/1992; 9:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: We indicated last week that if LAYN made a daily low at 15.64 or higher we will enter a long position, and that requirement was fulfilled during the trading day on Friday. We thus plan to add a position in this stock at the opening on Monday, November 1 (just after the Void-of-Course Moon ends), and will be setting our initial stop at 14.75.

Royal Dutch Petroleum (RD)
NYSE; optionable
First Trade Date: 07/20/1954; 10:00 a.m.
Trading Strategy: Saturn is conjoining the RD First-Trade Sun, and Mars is conjoining First-Trade Neptune. That looks like a little oily action! RD has been tracking fifth-harmonic Venus quite nicely lately; if that energy holds to give us a daily close above this week’s fifth-harmonic pow-wow at 54.95 or higher, we will add a long position to the Model Portfolio. Our initial stop will be set at 52.85.
