FinancialCyclesWeekly.com #0441 – October 10-16, 2004 with Tim Bost
COMMENT: Our letter is a bit briefer than usual this week because we’re still in the midst of our travels and are doing our market analysis “on the fly.” We’ve been in Raleigh, North Carolina for the past few days, talking about financial astrology and meeting personally with clients to discuss individual strategies for approaching their investments, resolving their business challenges, and optimizing their financial opportunities. On Monday we’re off to Atlanta for a couple of days, and then will be making a couple of stops in Alabama this week before returning to our home base in Sarasota, Florida.
As always, we also have been providing consulting services on the telephone, and have been in touch with our clients and students in other parts of the country along the way. If you’re interested in a personal telephone appointment give us a call at 941-921-2588; you’ll find more details on the consultations that are available by visiting our website at www.TimBost.com.
Enthusiasm on the Road
We continued to be delighted to see the huge amount of interest in financial astrology that is in evidence everywhere we go. We gave a presentation to the Raleigh chapter of the Spiritual Frontiers Fellowship on Thursday evening, focusing on the ways that financial astrology can be a useful tool for advancing spiritual development. The follow-up question and answer session brought lots of intense questions about using astrology in active trading, and it was great to see such strong interest coming from a diverse group of people.
Markets on the Move
Last week we commented that “A Sun/Mercury conjunction and a Venus/Uranus opposition should both provide plenty of energy to keep prices moving upward” in the stock market. That turned out to be true in trading throughout the world, except for the action in U.S. stocks, with the major averages turning in a losing week.
The big problems are continuing weakness in the employment picture, with a somewhat positive but basically disappointing jobs report coming from the Labor Department, and the continuing climb in crude oil prices. We noted in our last letter that there had just been a 3% bump in oil prices during the preceding week; this past week topped even that record, with a 6% increase bringing the price of crude to a settlement of over $53 a barrel on the November contract. That means the price of oil has gone up by roughly 79% in the past year.
Average gasoline prices are again pushing nearly $2 at the pump in the U.S., and the airlines, trucking companies, and retailers are all feeling the crunch. And while the price jumps in crude have been the strongest in the U.S., oil futures aren’t exactly backing off in other markets, either, with the price of Brent crude for November delivery closing at $49.71 a barrel on Friday at the International Petroleum Exchange in London.
A Big Astrological Event
This week brings a Solar Eclipse, which is certainly important to keep an eye on for market impact. The eclipse makes tight contacts with planets in the horoscopes for the S&P 500, Wheat futures, and the Canadian Dollar, so it could have a wide-reaching effect on market activity. More significantly, however, it also connects with the horoscopes for Number 2 Heating Oil and for Leaded Gasoline, so it’s quite likely that we’ll see a lot of price action in the oil pits again this week.
*****
THE WEEK AHEAD
Stocks will be trading this Monday, but the action will stop in the government bond markets and many people in the governmental and financial arenas will have the day off. That’s why we’re looking for a fairly slow start to the trading week, at least in terms of volume.
It’s a big week for earnings reports, with more than 200 companies releasing earnings news. The biggest ones will be L G Philips LCD (LPL), Infosys Technologies (INFY), Gannett (GCI), Intel Corporation (INTC), Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), Linear Technology (LLTC), M&T Bank Corporation (MTB), POSCO (PKX), Royal Philips Electronics (PHG), Marshall & Ilsley (MI), Harley-Davidson (HDI), ASML Holdings (ASML), Apple Computer (AAPL), Yahoo Inc. (YHOO), Accenture (ACN), SunTrust (STI), State Street Corporation (STT), Juniper Networks (JNPR), Groupe Danone (DA), General Motors (GM), First Data (FDC), Fifth Third Bancorp (FITB), Eaton (ETN), Citigroup (C), BB&T Corporation (BBT), Bank of America Corporation (BAC), the New York Times Company (NYT), Abbott Laboratories (ABT), POPULAR Inc. (BPOP), Wachovia Corporation (WB), Regions Financial (RF), Huntington Bancshares (HBAN), Genuine Parts (GPC), KeyCorp (KEY), Knight Ridder (KRI), MGIC Investment Corporation (MTG), Compass Bancshares (CBSS), UnitedHealth Group Inc. (UNH), E. W. Scripps (SSP), Sun Microsystems (SUNW), Nexen (NXY), Stryker (SYK), Southwest Airlines (LUV), and Nokia (NOK).
Right on the heels of the Solar Eclipse on Wednesday night, we’ll be getting economic reports on Import Prices, Export Prices, Initial Jobless Claims, Business Inventories, the Trade Balance, the Producer Price Index, Retail Sales, Capacity Utilization, Industrial Production, and the Treasury Budget, plus the Michigan Consumer Sentiment report and the Empire State Index.
The astrological highlight of the week is of course the Solar Eclipse at 21 degrees Libra. Remember that important events tend to happen around the time of eclipses, so pay attention to the economic and geopolitical action this week, with an eye to possible long-term effects on market direction and economic temperament. Remember, too, that eclipses set up resonant fields that are sometimes triggered well after the actual astronomical event, setting the stage for action in the markets or on the world scene at other times. For example, this week will also include a couple of transiting triggers to the solar eclipse that took place in May, 2003. Be sure to review our calendar feature each week, where we include eclipse activations in our listing of astrological events.
There’s a void-of-course Moon that will just be ending as the market action gets underway on Tuesday, so we’ll be a bit cautious on the opening and take the pre-opening speculation with a grain of salt. Another lunar void lasts for several hours in the middle of the trading day on Thursday, so we’ll have a good excuse for an early lunch and perhaps even a quick nap afterwards.
Have a great week!

SPIRITUAL FOCUS FOR THE WEEK
The greatest traders have all understood that emotional balance is the key to successful trading. Through Practical Spiritual Astrology we have an opportunity to restore inner harmony, enhance emotional balance, and make wiser choices in the markets.
Because we are so richly blessed with opportunities, we don’t need to hesitate in opening our hearts and our resources to others. If we are courageous enough to act on the basis of our intuition, we can become more passionate about sharing the ideas that are truly important.
“Go confidently in the direction of your dreams! Live the life you've imagined. As you simplify your life, the law of the universe will be simpler.”
- Henry David Thoreau

STOCKS TO WATCH: BPT, EXPD, PARL, TONS.
BP Prudhoe Bay Royal Trust (BPT)
NYSE
First Trade Date: 05/23/1989; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: Saturn is currently transiting the BPT First-Trade Ascendant, so why the heck is this stock’s price shooting up parabolicly? Well, it may have something to do with the general oil price mania, plus the fact that Mars is moving across the BPT First-Trade IC. Jupiter will soon be crossing that same chart angle, which we expect to add more punch to the price, but for now we expect a pull-back. Our plan is to sell BPT short on Tuesday, setting our initial buy stop at 47.94. If BPT trades above that level on Monday, however, we will let this trade pass.
Expeditors International of Washington, Inc. (EXPD)
NASDAQ; Optionable
First Trade Date: 09/26/1984; 10:00 a.m.
Trading Strategy: With Jupiter crossing over its First-Trade Sun, it’s not surprising that EXPD has seen a nice price pop lately. Jupiter is moving on, however, and the First-Trade Moon is about to be hit with this week’s Solar Eclipse. On top of that, EXPD made a correct planetary high this past week at 55.61 at the Venus/Uranus opposition. In our book that makes it a good candidate for a short sale early this week, with an initial buy stop set at 54.95.
Parlux Fragrances Inc. (PARL)
NASDAQ
First Trade Date: 02/26/1987; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: This stock has recently broken out to the upside as Saturn has begun a transit of its First-Trade IC. That suggests that an even stronger upward move is on the way, and we were pleased to see PARL make a correct planetary low on Friday at 14.13 in tune with the Venus/Uranus opposition (G,180,N,-2). If support for this stock holds at that level for the next couple of trading sessions, we plan to enter a long position in mid-week. We’ll set our initial stop at 13.25.
Novamerican Steel Inc. (TONS)
NASDAQ
First Trade Date: 10/31/1997; 9:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: With Jupiter transiting the Midheaven in the TONS First-Trade chart, and with Neptune conjoining First-Trade Jupiter, it’s not surprising that we’ve seen such a strong price move for this stock in recent trading. What’s even more interesting, though, is the way this stock found support exactly on a first-harmonic Venus line (G,360,N,-2) on September 29, and then again on another Venus increment last week at the opposition to Uranus (G,180,N,-2). We plan to add a long position in TONS to the Model Portfolio this week, setting our initial stop at 25.00.
