FINANCIAL CYCLES WEEKLY UPDATE #0426 – June 27 – July 3, 2004 with TIM BOST

COMMENT: Venus returns to direct motion this week, strengthening cash flow potentials and renewing opportunities in markets that are getting stagnant. It joins forces with Friday’s high-energy Full Moon to promise a very memorable week in the markets!
Deficit spending, at both a national level and a personal level, is one of the key factors behind skyrocketing debt and the instability of the U.S. dollar. In fact, Americans are notorious for borrowing and spending instead of saving—the American savings ratio is roughly 4 percent of income.
That’s a woefully low figure, especially when it’s compared to the savings ratio in other countries. The French, for example, have a savings ratio of 12.2 percent, and the Germans save 10.4 percent of their income.
But the U.S. isn’t the only country that’s having savings problems. In Japan, a nation that has historically had an exemplary record, the savings picture is also starting to look pretty grim. In 1991, the Japanese savings ratio was 15.1 percent. Today, it has dropped down to just 6.4 percent.
The root causes, according to Professor Teruhiko Mano of Seigakuin University, are Japan’s declining personal income levels and an aging population. While Japanese under 29 years old still save almost 20 percent of their income, their parents and grandparents are dipping into savings at an increasing rate, bringing the overall numbers down. “There may come a day when household savings will be insufficient to make up for the deficits of the national and local governments,” Professor Mano warns. “Japan will then tap into its foreign currency reserves, and such a development will naturally affect the U.S. economy as well.”
Actually, though, we don’t have to wait for events like that in order to feel the impact of a weakening dollar. There’s just enough inflationary pressure now to convince Mr. Greenspan and his cronies at the Fed to try tapping on the brakes by raising interest rates. The Fed’s Open Market Committee meets this week, and the pundits are already predicting a rate hike of 25 basis points, the first increase in over four years.
If the Fed’s move matches that expectation, its impact on the stock market will be negligible. It would take a much stronger rate adjustment to get the market’s attention, but a failure to raise rates at all right now would be likely to provoke some real speculative euphoria on the part of traders. So it looks like we’ll get an increase that has already been discounted by the market, one that will have little effect on spending and borrowing across the board. And if there’s ever going to be a positive shift in the savings ratio, we’ll have to see a much bolder move from Greenspan & company.
Even a small interest rate increase, however, could have a profound long-term impact on the housing market. Home sales have boomed to an all-time high in recent months, thanks in part to the easy-money policy and to the concern that since interest rates will have to go up soon, it’s better to borrow now! That boom has stretched most home buyers thin as they count on ultimate appreciation in real estate values; even a small tweak in the structure of their mortgage payments could make it a real challenge for them to make ends meet. That sort of circumstance is likely to encourage many recent home buyers to become sellers, at first in the hope of turning a profit, next in the wish at least to break even, and at last in the realization that a sale at any price is better than no sale at all. And in today’s over-valued market, just a few home sales at distressed prices could easily snowball into a full-fledged real estate crash.
While that’s not a particularly pleasant thought at first blush, it does offer some positive prospects. Whenever markets go through major changes, the inevitable price discrepancies offer strong opportunities for profit, as long as you have liquid assets available that can be directed in appropriate ways. Personal financial growth is likely to depend on the ability to be flexible and light on your feet, and there are few experiences that cultivate those particular abilities as well as active equities trading does. Plan your trades, follow your trading rules and disciplines faithfully, take your losses in stride, and you will find yourself moving steadily toward the kind of emotional balance and inner self-confidence that will ultimately help you weather any storm.
Have a great week!

THE WEEK AHEAD

This week the parade of earnings reports will be led by Sonic Corporation (SONC), Research In Motion (RIMM), Exfo Electro-Optical (EXFO), General Mills (GIS), McCormick & Co. (MKC), Monsanto (MON), Biomet (BMET), Constellation Brands (STZ), and ConAgra Foods (CAG).
Watchers of the economy will be keeping an eye on reports including May Consumption, May Personal Income, May Construction Spending, May Factory Orders, June Nonfarm Payrolls, June Unemployment, and the June reports from the Purchasing Managers and the Institute of Supply Management. The Federal Reserve Open Market Committee will hold a two-day meeting on Tuesday and Wednesday, and is widely expected to raise interest rates slightly. The European Central Bank will issue an interest rate policy statement of its own the following day.
The astrological factors at work this week continue to show a strong positive bias for stock prices. A Sun/Uranus trine sets the tone for the week, followed by the Venus direct station coming late on Tuesday (Tuesday is also a day with a Void-of-Course Moon impacting much of the trading opportunity, so extra caution is necessary). Chiron is conjoined by Venus heliocentrically and opposed by Mercury geocentrically as the month draws to a close; on Thursday (during another day dominated by a void Moon) a Venus/Uranus square promises pleasant surprises. Friday’s Full Moon caps the action for the week, but it may require some extra caution, both in and out of the markets. Mars aspects to Pluto and Hades, along with a Saturn/Neptune dynamic, could set the stage for an extremely volatile end to the week’s action.

GLOBAL EQUITIES MARKETS LAST WEEK

It was generally a good week to be in the equities market, unless you happened to be trading U.S. blue chips. It was all the Dow Industrials and the S&P 500 could do to break even for the week, while the techs and small-cap issues registered substantial gains. Europe and Sydney were basically flat, while the orient displayed some solid positive action, in spite of a shortened trading week in Hong Kong. This week Hong Kong and Canada will both close their markets on Thursday, and the U.S. bond market will close early on Friday to mark the beginning of the July 4 holiday.

Dow Jones Industrial Average – down 0.43%
Dow Jones Transportation Average – up 3.11%

STOCKS TO WATCH: PETM, SPLS, SRDX.

Petsmart (PETM)
NASDAQ; Optionable
First Trade Date: 07/23/1993; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: Jupiter is once again conjoining the PETM First-Trade Ascendant, with Venus making its direct station in conjunction to the First-Trade Midheaven. To call this a positive picture would be an understatement! The ride may be a short one, however, with the possibility of this stock’s rapid price growth outpacing its true valuation. Even so, we plan to add a long position in PETM to the Model Portfolio early this week, setting our initial stop at 31.25.

Staples Inc. (SPLS)
NASDAQ; Optionable
First Trade Date: 04/28/1989; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: We took a small loss when we traded SPLS in February; at that time we incorrectly reported this stock’s First-Trade Date as 08/20/1997, although we used the correct First-Trade Date in our calculations and analysis. In February Saturn was transiting the First-Trade Ascendant, but Jupiter is currently in play, conjoining the SPLS First-Trade IC. This stock has seen a nice price run-up during the past two months, and we believe that the Jupiter transit, along with transiting Mars in opposition to the First-Trade Moon, will extend the rally, with the First Trade Uranus planetary line (G,27.52,N,0) providing a price target in the 30.74 – 30.94 range. Our plan is thus to enter a long position in this stock early in the trading week; we will set our initial stop at 28.00.

SurModics Inc. (SRDX)
NASDAQ; Optionable
First Trade Date: 03/04/1998; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: Transiting Jupiter is currently in opposition to the SRDX First-Trade Sun, and the stock has responded nicely by breaking out of an 8-week trading range. The First-Trade Venus/Neptune conjunction for this stock seems to inform the trading process, especially as defined by geocentric planetary lines for Neptune (G,30.12,N,0) and Venus (G,29.99,N,0). SRDX has moved up to a higher increment of the Venus line during recent trading; if it can penetrate that line with a close above 25.03, we will enter a long position in this stock for the Model Portfolio. Our plan is to set an initial stop at 21.70.
