FINANCIAL CYCLES WEEKLY UPDATE #0423 – June 6-12, 2004 with TIM BOST
COMMENT: This week we get a truly rare celestial event—a transit of Venus across the face of the Sun. It’s something that’s of considerable interest to astronomers, partly because observing it can teach us a lot about planetary measurements and distances, and partly because transits of Venus don’t happen very often. As Edmund Halley, the British Astronomer Royal, put it in 1691, “The sight of Venus on the Sun is by far the noblest that astronomy can afford.”
Transits of Venus typically come in pairs, with the events taking place about eight years apart (the next one will be in 2012). These pairs of transits only happen about every 110 to 130 years. The last set of Venus transits was in 1874 and 1882, and after 2012 we won’t get another set until 2117 and 2125.
The complete significance of transits of Venus is not entirely clear, mainly because they are such rare phenomena. But Dr. Carl-Johan Calleman has postulated that they are connected with the evolution of human consciousness as we gradually develop a Global Brain. He connects the 1518 transit with Magellan’s start of a voyage in 1519 to circumnavigate the globe, an event which moved human awareness into a new global reality. The transits of Venus in 1631 and 1639 came as the first national mail services were being developed—in 1624 for Denmark and in 1636 for Sweden.
By the time of the 1761 transit of Venus, the event’s importance was acknowledged by the scientific community around the world, and there was unprecedented cooperation among the academies of different nations to observe the Venus transits of 1761, 1769, 1874, and 1882. As the most recent transit took place, in 1882, the beginnings of global communications were underway, with the Transatlantic Telegraph cable being completed, the World Postal Union being founded, and early prototypes of the telephone and motion pictures in the works.
And what about this time? In response to the event, the Global Oneness Commitment has been launched (see www.experiencefestival.com) as an eight-year project to move human consciousness forward through cooperation and meditation. But even in the short term, this remarkable coming together of Venus and the Sun serves to focus our attention on a couple of real necessities for the world today: first, a shift in awareness away from hatred, factiousness and animosity and a return to love, trust, and reconciliation; second, a new awareness of money as a potent force for spiritual evolution. These are changes that may take eight years or more to bring into full manifestation, but they can be initiated instantaneously, in our own minds. And as we cultivate these refinements of awareness, we can personally gain a peace of mind that not only offers more fulfillment in our work and our relationships, but also enhances our ability to engage in the markets in a way that is unruffled by the winds of fear and greed, which is the real secret of consistent profits.
Have a great week!

THE WEEK AHEAD
The week will bring earnings reports from Offshore Logistics (OLG), Blyth Inc. (BTH), UTI Worldwide Inc. (UTIW), Dave & Buster’s Inc. (DAB), Korn Ferry International (KFY), Take-Two Interactive Solutions (TTWO), OmniVision Technologies (OVTI), H&R Block (HRB), Tommy Hilfiger (TOM), Smithfield Foods (SFD), Vail Resorts Inc. (MTN), Ashworth Inc. (ASHW), and National Semiconductor (NSM).
The May Producer Price Index, scheduled for release on Friday, is likely to be the key event in the economic reporting arena. Thanks to the impact of higher petroleum prices, this measure of inflation is almost certain to show a considerable jump. Of course the reporting will also include a figure that excludes food and energy costs, which will likely show a much more conservative increase, but what kind of businesses involve no cost for food and/or energy? The report will be released just 5 minutes after a Sun/Pluto opposition, so we expect it to make its influence felt in the markets in a very big way.
Other economic reports during the week will include April numbers for Wholesale Inventories, Consumer Credit, and International Trade, along with the preliminary June report on Consumer Sentiment from the University of Michigan. There will be interest rate announcements from the Bank of England and the Bank of Canada, and Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan will get his share of attention at an international monetary conference in London and at his reconfirmation hearings with the Senate Banking Committee in Washington. President Bush will also try to get into the act as an economic newsmaker when he hosts the G-8 summit meeting in Sea Island, Georgia.
The week is loaded with important astrological action, which could make for an extremely memorable trading environment. We’re likely to get bigger market moves, more volatility, and a good bit more uncertainty as the week unfolds. There’s a very treacherous downside to the trading picture as well.
On Monday we’ll need to evaluate positions before the closing bell, since a void-of-course Moon gets underway just after 2:00 p.m. Tuesday is an extremely active day astrologically, not only because of the rare transit of Venus, but also because it features a Venus perigee and Uranus moving to its maximum point of declination. Wednesday brings a Venus/Hades parallel and a Mercury/Cupido opposition, so we may get distressing news with wide significance that could rattle the markets. Thursday’s trading begins with a void-of-course Moon that lasts until just before noon, but the day’s big events are a heliocentric Venus/Pluto conjunction, a Pluto perigee, and a Uranus retrograde station—more than enough to bring a big change in market direction! The week’s volatile potential doesn’t stop there, however, with Friday Sun/Pluto opposition and Mars/Vulcanus conjunction leading up to Pluto’s movement towards its maximum declination.

STOCKS TO WATCH: AACE, ADVNB, DAKT, KNGT.
Ace Cash Express (AACE)
NASDAQ
First Trade Date: 12/02/1992; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: With Saturn crossing over the AACE First-Trade Descendant, it’s easy to see why this stock has been struggling a bit recently. But that transit’s impact is just about over, and Jupiter is moving in to form a square to the AACE First-Trade Sun. We like the looks of this stock as a candidate for a long position, especially since its recent trading sessions have been neatly tracking a Mercury line (G,23.23,N,0) in a positive direction. A combination of First-Trade-based lines for Pluto (G,23.35,N,0) and Vulcanus (G,10.69,N,0) is forming to provide a significant resistance zone—this combination provided important resistance in January and price support in February and March. If AACE moves above this zone for a daily close at 26.22 or higher we will enter a long position, setting our initial stop at 23.75.
Advanta Corporation Class B (ADVNB)
NASDAQ; Optionable
First Trade Date: 05/06/1992; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: ADVNB has just experienced a Jupiter return as Saturn has conjoined its First-Trade Ascendant; this combination has kept the stock trading in a fairly congested range during the past couple of months. Longer-term, the actions of Uranus (G,25.79,N,0) and Neptune (G,25.89,N,0) have helped to define the trading structure for this stock. We think there’s a possibility that this stock could break out for an important move upward, but we’ll take our guidance from those planetary energies. If we get two consecutive daily price bars with lows that don’t penetrate the Neptune line at a price of 15.99, we will take a long position, setting our initial stop on the Uranus line at 15.62.
Daktronics Inc. (DAKT)
NASDAQ; Optionable
First Trade Date: 02/10/1994; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: This stock has Saturn transiting its First-Trade IC, and it’s been hitting the price resistance zone it encountered in late March and early April. Saturn will soon be moving out of the way, however, and transiting Pluto will be forming an opposition to First-Trade Kronos—an action that could add some significant power to the trading prospects for DAKT. But it’s another Transneptunian, Vulcanus (G,10.675,N,0), that has consistently provided the most important definitions for this stock’s price movements in the past. If we get a daily close above that line at 24.03 we will add a long position in DAKT to the Model Portfolio, setting our initial stop on the next-lowest increment of that line at 22.98.
Knight Transportation (KNGT)
NASDAQ; Optionable
First Trade Date: 10/25/1994; 09:30 a.m.
Trading Strategy: With Jupiter currently transiting its First-Trade Midheaven, KNGT has had some positive price action lately. We think that positive bias will fade as Jupiter moves on its way, however, so we’re looking at this stock as a possible short sale. Over the long term the actions of Saturn (G,33.51,N,0) and Cupido (G,23.53,N,0) have been factors in the trading action for this stock. With that in mind, we will add a short position in KNGT to the Model Portfolio this week, setting our initial buy stop at the intersection of Saturn and Cupido at 27.23.
